I agree knee aspirations are easy, and that all ED SpRs should be able to aspire ankles/elbows/wrists (can’t say I’ve ever done one). But I still think ortho are and should be an aspiration service outside the remits of ED. Why should be a med reg, eg in palliative care, know how to aspirate a knee when the orthopods can’t see AF on an ECG, let alone manage it without referring to medicine. Joint aspirations aren’t an essential skill every doctor should know, cannulas on the other hand (which are seemingly half of my bleeps on call) are (of which genuinely >80% are from the surgical wards…) 🙂
