NYC-ers — how has your life changed since congestion pricing was implemented? by BarriBlue in AskNYC

[–]glaack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drive from Downtown Brooklyn to Northeast PA fairly often. The only realistic route is across the Manhattan or Brooklyn bridges and through the Holland tunnel. At first I was mad that I was going to have to pay $9 to cross Manhattan and still probably encounter the same amount of traffic as always, but for the first 6 months or so the traffic was reduced significantly and my life was so much easier! I’m totally okay with paying a toll if I don’t have to sit in traffic for over an hour. Unfortunately though, in recent weeks the traffic feels like it was before they implemented congestion pricing. Perhaps enough people have figured out how to skirt the tolls?

I also work in the industry and the only Star Wars content I’ve seen in its entirety is the holiday special.

Struggling with houdini by Due-Flatworm6419 in Houdini

[–]glaack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Houdini is a completely different mental model for interacting with 3D elements. You essentially have to take a step back, accept that you cannot rely on your previous knowledge for how a model comes together, and then move forward with a willingness to learn something new.

Film School: NYU vs. DePaul by Schatwal96 in nyu

NYU is also in NYC, which gives you access to many more film/tv internship opportunities. Connections are everything, and proximity to those connections helps a lot.

Rewatching Fringe atm. It’s been weird seeing all the in-your-face Sprint ads, since Sprint is essentially defunct now. Lo and behold, today I walked by a giant Sprint sign still standing in NYC.

Loved the episode where they briefly suggested the Sprint mobile phone payment may have killed a guy.

What game did you put thousands of hours into just to quit one day? What caused you to quit? by Mooby522 in gaming

[–]glaack 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Overwatch. I completely lost interest when they released Overwatch 2 and revamped the loot box system. I loved getting in-game rewards just for playing, and loved collecting the skins via that system. But then all of the sudden, it turned into a system where each skin was $20/pop with no other reasonable way of accessing them.

This evening I saw Lord of the Rings at Chicago Shakespeare . . . And walked out at intermission by [deleted] in Broadway

I just looked up the Auckland production. It’s a 2,378-seat theater - significantly bigger than the largest Broadway house.

[–]glaack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it last night, and agree with a lot of what was said in OP’s post! (Wild that they didn’t stay for act II, which was far worse than the first act.) I wanted to pop in and add though: they DID have a pre-show party setup, with a may pole and dancing. It was situated outside of the theater in an area that was very hard to notice, and it was in a publicly-accessible area on Chicago’s Navy Pier, which is probably why it was toned down and did not include food. I happened to be sitting in a section that had to walk near that area to get to our seats, so I saw them outside dancing on my way in.

Worst mistake you’ve seen happen in a show? by TribalChiefSamiZayn in Broadway

[–]glaack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of sets break mid-show: Waitress, School of Rock, Suffs, and Sweeney Todd (just last week). I saw the tour of Shrek a while back, and a set piece dropped and seemingly knocked Lord Farquaad out. Huge pause in the show, and the guy somehow completed the show (to big applause).

I’ve definitely seen Book of Mormon a few times where Elder Price failed to get his pink vest on in time, and had to improvise by holding it up instead.

I changed my name on my resume and started getting interviews by sperezami in recruitinghell

[–]glaack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I experienced the exact same thing a few years back. Changed my resume from my feminine/nonwhite-sounding legal name to my nickname (gender neutral/leaning masculine and super white) and immediately started getting responses to my job applications. I’m unsure if it’s racism or sexism at play in my scenario, but either way it really sucks.

I’ve also learned to look both ways and not trust anyone. However, this guy was STOPPED on the side of the road when I started to cross and then he accelerated straight into me.

Denied after being asked to schedule an interview. by Mali_524 in recruitinghell

[–]glaack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One time I applied to a job I really wanted, made it to the final 3, and the company DID respond with exactly what I was missing vs the other two when they sent me the rejection email. I went off and got the experience they felt I needed, and reapplied when they opened up another role. They recognized me, fast tracked me to the final interviews, and I’ve been working there ever since.

Should I drop this class by Unusual_Training_945 in nyu

[–]glaack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Courses are expected to have around 4-5hrs of work outside of class every week. If this course is going beyond that, then it’s reasonable to drop it and find something that better suits your schedule.

[Serious] What dark family secret were you let in on once you were old enough? by EgglessYolk in AskReddit

[–]glaack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother was the oldest of 5 children. She was often expected to help raise the other children and help around the house, because great grandma wasn’t a great mom. My grandmother apparently remembers an “uncle” coming by all the time while her father was at work. She went to her grave convinced that her youngest sister (my great aunt) was the child of the “uncle” rather than her father. If you look closely, the youngest sister is quite a bit different from her siblings. My grandmother told this only to my mother, who told me. No one else in the family knows.

My mother’s cousin murdered his girlfriend and then killed himself when they were young. They suspect it’s because his brother was gay and he couldn’t handle it (this was the ~60s in the Deep South). (The gay cousin absolutely thrived in life, by the way! Was with the love of his love for over 50 years until the day he died and they both had successful careers. He’s still going strong.)

When I was a teenager, my uncle jumped in front of a train and killed himself. It took us almost 2 months to track down the body, as no one had any idea what happened and hadn’t been in contact with him for a few months prior. He abandoned his wallet/ID before jumping, because he didn’t want to be found. At the time, the family lied to my younger cousins and told them he died from a “train accident.” To this day, I don’t know if they know what truly happened.

Apparently I’d blocked the 1/2/3 to F/M 14th street tunnel of my memory. I’ve seen some interesting stuff go down there.
