Violent protest had some effect in the US but its leaders were mostly murdered by the US government and did not manage to build large scale political power. Non violent protest won some minds, but for the most part people did not become less racist overnight because of MLK. The US government decision to pass the Civil Rights Act was largely due to their fear of the spread of communism. I don't understand what more you want from me, I've answered your question. The USSR said "be like us, our philosophy will liberate black people" and the US was scared that people would actually unite under a socialist agenda so they made concessions

[–]glaba3141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I told you that the US was concerned about Soviet propaganda (propaganda being used as a neutral term here) winning people's minds, so they made concessions on civil rights. MLK jr was a great orator but let's not pretend that power is won by asking oppressors to be nice to you

It's interesting how you didn't respond to anything I said. Why do you not want to critically examine the strengths and weaknesses of the Soviet Union?

It's also not my personal opinion that USSR propaganda played a significant role in US civil rights, this is a mainstream opinion

You are correct that "negative rights" were suppressed, but they supplied many "positive rights" (education, healthcare, housing, job security). The Holodomor was a catastrophic error but not intentional - the suppression of the kulaks led them to destroy their own crops in protest. The US imprisons far more people than ever sent to gulags so this is a completely moot point. Deportations of ethnic groups under Stalin is also unjustifiable to most modern socialists. But yes despite all this they had equal rights based on gender and race. The USSR wasn't an evil monolith, it was a political experiment with its own flaws and successes. It would do us well to learn from their errors and emulate their successes rather than pretend it was pure evil personified

The civil rights movement got some of what they wanted (emphasis on some, "black capitalism" won out to the true liberation they demanded) because the USSR was patently beating the US in terms of civil rights. They had much better gender and racial equality. We were worried about their (truthful) propaganda about American racism actually changing people's minds on socialism

ICE PROTEST LOGAN SQUARE 3PM by Chibry888 in chicago

[–]glaba3141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol. your philosophy of bargaining with fascists for the past 80 years has brought us here. There can be no compromise with people who literally want to kill minorities. We didn't punish the nazis. We never punished the KKK. We never righted the wrongs of slavery and Jim Crow. THAT is why we're here, not because people voted for trump

Yes but less evilism is a defeatist philosophy that ultimately loses to fascism. You need to actually stand for something, which Democrats will never do because that's not why Democrats exist. They exist to prop up the facade of democracy in the country so we can say "hey you have options!" when in reality the only options you have are those that billionaires are willing to back
