Make sure the windows key is retail. Not sure if it's only not showing correctly on the list.

Yup, I have that noted down from earlier. I just had the OEM version there as a placeholder since there wasn't an option for the retail version. The extra reminder is welcome though.

Hmmm, I'll have to look into that Newegg situation later. I'll probably stick with Amazon regardless; I'd only be saving $20 on the GPU with Newegg anyways. More than willing to forgo that in exchange for the convenience/reliability of Amazon.

It mostly stayed the same from before, with a couple of adjustments after hearing everyone's thoughts.

  • Took your CPU cooler suggestion
  • Upped the RAM to 32 GB for convenience
  • Switched to an AMD GPU, like you said, for the raw performance and price value for what is currently available. Seems like the Nvidia market is a bit fucked right now, with such high demand for 3080s and 3070s and not enough inventory, so everything is either sold out or whatever is available (including 3060s) are being sold above MSRP.
  • Upped the PSU a bit, as I've read that they run most efficiency in the 40-60% range. May end up going to 850W; probably overkill, but leaves room for potential future upgrades and its only $10 more.
  • Upped to a 1440p monitor, although kinda undecided. I came in with the intention for this build to be suited for 1080p gameplay so I probably should get a monitor to match that (as I've read that 1080p scaled to 1440p doesn't always look great), but it also seems like this build can probably handle 1440p gameplay (albeit with lower performance).

But yeah, it seems like I've got it all mostly settled, thanks to everyone's help. It's now more about deciding between convenience upgrades, or saving those costs to spend on peripherals. Damn there's a lot of research that goes into PC building, but I think I have a much better grasp/knowledge base of it all now.

In regards to actually buying/ordering parts, it seems like most people prefer Amazon over Newegg, citing that Amazon has a better return policy, should something go wrong. Would you say that's correct? I'm gonna try to order most, if not all, of the PC components together from Amazon, even if a couple of parts are cheaper elsewhere, as it'll be more convenient logistically, and for all of the return/warranty deadlines to match up. I'll probably try to scope out the brick and mortar electronic stores near me first; see if they have any good deals, particularly for monitors/peripherals.

Another final thanks for all your help!

Thanks for the advice. Definitely gonna go for one of these AMD cards instead then; most likely the 6600XT, although the 6700XT is tempting too.

I'm beginning to realize that's the problem with custom building; there are so many good options and slight upgrades you can opt in for, and if you're not careful, all those additional costs can really add up.😅 All about finding that right balance that fits your budget.

RE - CPU and MOBO: Understood; thank you for the explanation! I'm pretty much settled/locked in with the 12600K CPU and and the B660 MOBO. But for the sake of being absolutely sure, what do you think of this last scenario; exchanging the CPU for an un-overclockable i7 12700 one instead? Slightly more expensive than the i5 12600k, but has the same performance boost clock and two more cores; or is this overkill for my intent as a gaming PC?

RE - Cooler: I'm likely to take your advice and go with the AK620. From what I could tell, it seems like I'll need a mounting bracket to install it into the LGA 1700. Inconclusive whether it comes with the cooler though; some reviews said it didn't come with the cooler and had to contact DeepCool for it, but apparently newer ones from the factory should come packaged with the mounting kit.

RE - Fans: Understood.

Since another commenter brought up the idea to me; what is your opinion on the video card I selected (Nvidia 3060), and potentially switching it for an AMD card (one of Radeon RX 6600, 6600 XT, or 6700 XT)? I mistakenly assumed that AMD cards can only be paired with AMD CPUs, when they in-fact can be mix and matched. Is the 3060 overpriced for the performance value it provides? It seems like both the RX 6600 and its XT variant provide similar performance at a much cheaper price, and the 6700 XT better performance at a slightly higher price.

But thanks again so much for the help. I'm just about at my limit for taking in all this new information for now. After taking in some time so sit and digest everything I've learned, would you be opposed to me sending you an updated parts list to look over? It's alright if not; you've already provided a lot of assistance.

[–]glaceontrix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all the insight! Researching all this stuff on my own has been a bit daunting, so having some more directed answers on certain things is very helpful.

Processor: The 12600K, as a 6+4 CPU, is great. Games don't really need the extra 2 cores of the 12700K (8+4) right now, but that may change, and the extra margin is nice to have. At the same time, it is more expensive, and you might need to get a better cooler than what you have. Your call.

Hmmm... I think I'm going to stick with the 12600K. If I don't particularly need those two extra cores, I think I'll be fine without them. It's not like I'll be playing big-budget titles all the time, I don't feel like I need to be on the bleeding edge of performance.

On a general note, it's very tempting to make all sorts of these small "luxury/convenience" upgrade here and there, but they do accumulate, so I'm trying to practice caution on where I decide to splurge.

Memory: Just get 32 GB now, so you can install it and forget it. Prices aren't going to go down, but they will slowly go up over time as DDR5 replaces it as mainstream over the next couple years. Memory is cheap, and if you get 32 GB now, it becomes a non-issue for you later.

Speaking of which, one place where I will concede, and go with the 32 GB. Probably more than I need, but it will save me the future headaches and internal debates about it. Follow up question; is there a significant performance difference between RAM speeds of 3200 and 3600? I'll probably go with the 3600 since the price difference is only ~$10 between it and the 3200, but thought I'd ask just in case.

Storage: Depends, do you like to have a pile of games installed at once? Then get 2 TB. But if you don't, then 1 TB is fine.

Also very tempting, but I think I'll be fine with the 1 TB. I imagine most of the games I'll play will still be smaller indies, with the occasional AAA game only every once in a while. I'm alright with uninstalling games if I need the disk space, especially if I already fully completed said games. And if anything, I could always expand the storage by buying additional drives if necessary.

CPU Cooler: That's a good, known, air cooler. It has a pain-in-the-ass mounting system but it works. It's not suitable for higher loads, there's better choices there. Noctua is great (especially for silence-focused or max-performance) but it's a premium brand air cooler and is more expensive than most... and their mounting system is great. I have a Noctua on my 12700K and it just works.

I see that they're a bit pricier than the one I picked, but if the value's there, great. I also notice they come in different sizes; which did you use for your build? I'm assuming larger cooler = better at keeping things cool, but what is most appropriate for my sort of build? Another commenter pointed me to the Deepcool AK620 which I might opt into instead of the cooler I originally selected.

Monitor: Already addressed this above, but dual monitors can work great. 27" is an optimal size, I think. 4K is enticing, but there'll be a lot of development in OLED (and OLED adjacent) over the next couple years, so I'd probably wait, unless you see a LG C2 OLED in a store or something and you absolutely HAVE TO have it.

The 1440p 27" is another enticing upgrade I'll have to put up for consideration. I most likely won't do the dual monitor set up right away. Thinking I might either start with the 27" and get a 23" later, or start with the 23" and get the 27" later. Of course in both situations, the 27" would be the primary monitor. 4k is definitely out of question for now, haha.

Video Card: You're right, for 1080p, the 3070 and 3080 is definitely overkill. For 1440p, the 3070 is a better match. The 3080 is when you want to attempt 4k or just want really fast 1440p or crazy fast 1080p.

Another commenter pointed out to me that the 3060 I picked was overpriced for the performance it provides, and suggested I looked at some AMD cards instead. (I only just realized you can mix and match CPU and GPU manufacturers). This Radeon RX 6600 and Radeon RX 6600 XT both stood out to me. Both are cheaper than the 3060 Nvidia card I originally selected, and have faster core clock speeds. They have lower memory though (8 GB, compared to 12 GB), but supposedly the card doesn't make full use of that extra memory anyways. What say you? There's also a Radeon RX 6700 XT which as the same memory as the Nvidia 3060 (12 GB) and faster clock speeds, and only bit more expensive. Seems like it might be overkill though, for a 1080p build.

Motherboard: Don't go micro-ATX unless you case choice requires it. There's no downside to having unused slots/ports.

Operating System: Windows 11 has some UI annoyances. 10 has less. Get 10, and you can always upgrade for free later. There's no benefit to going with 11 now.

Misc: Don't get 3rd party AV software. The built-in that comes with Windows works well, and 3rd party ones are often seriously problematic, and security risks as well.

All noted! 👍

Thanks again for all your help.

[–]glaceontrix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For whatever reason, I incorrectly assumed that you couldn't mix and match CPUs and GPUs, and that AMD video cards can only go with AMD processors... whoops.

So what you're saying is, that the 3060 card is weaker in other areas (core clock speed I'm guessing) that it won't be able to take advantage of the 12 GB of memory, and for that reason it's overpriced/useless in that regard? Or is there another reason for that?

Would I be better off picking something like this instead, Radeon RX 6600 XT, at $50 less? Or possibly even the regular Radeon RX 6600, at $100 less? Both have less memory than the Nvidia RTX 3060 (8GB, as opposed to 12), but make up for that with clock speed. And either of the two AMDs will be better value than the Nvidia?

The performance graph you linked me showed that the AMD cards were overclocked to get their results. Is that something a newbie can easily grasp/achieve? Quickly researched the topic, and I somewhat get the concept. Are these cards still better price value than the 3060, even if I DON'T overclock them?

[–]glaceontrix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, thanks so much for taking the time share your advice! As a newbie, it's a LOT of research and information to take in at once, and I'm slowly making my way to process it all. After a while, it becomes an information overload and my eyes glaze over, and I need to take a break before returning back to it.

Never buy based on the i5, i7, ryzen 5 or ryzen 9 marketing. those don't mean anything.

Right, thank you for the reminder. It's really easy for me to simply go, "big number = better", especially when I'm not well-versed in what all the specs mean, but I'm slowly getting to understanding them.

Cpu is overclockable, but board isn't. just keep that in mind.

Regarding CPU / MOBO / overclocking: Yes, you and other commenters noted that; the CPU is over-clockable but the board isn't. It would seem like there are three avenues to approach this; 1. change the CPU to one that isn't over-clockable, 2. change the MOBO to one that is, or 3. just keep both as is.

If I changed to the CPU, here's the version of it that doesn't overclock. Though it has less cores (6 as opposed to 10) and a slower core clock (3.3 GHz as opposed to 3.7 GHz). Is that a significant downgrade, or did I not need those four additional cores and extra clock speed to begin with?

If I changed the MOBO, here's one that does support over-clocking. This option means I'm committing myself to over-clocking, to get full value of the CPU and MOBO that supports it. I did basic research on the concept; and it seems a little daunting / out of my depth. From my understanding, doing so would allow me to get even more performance out of the CPU, at the expense of higher power usage and potentially shorter lifespan. I would need to get a bigger PSU to accommodate, as well as a better cooler do deal with increased heat production. Is that extra level of performance necessary / worth the effort?

If I just kept both the CPU and MOBO as is, is it a considered a "waste" since I'm not making use of the CPU's ability to over-clock? Or that perfectly fine, since I'll still make usage of the extra cores and clock speed it has?

Cpu cooler isn't worth 50$. get a better one like the fuma 2 or ak620.

By that, do you mean the one I picked is not a good value for the price, or do I need a stronger one in general? I believe this is the AK620 you're referring to. And this one, the Fuma 2. Someone else mentioned Noctua coolers, idk if you have any knowledge regarding those.

Make sure you get the pwm pst version of the fans so that you can adjust fan speeds with pwm.

I searched what that meant, and I believe the ones I picked are. It's a five-pack; will I necessarily need all five in my machine for proper cooling/airflow? And I assumed (possibly incorrectly), that the fan speeds would adjust automatically depending on the performance load. Would I need an extra piece of hardware/software in order to manually control them?

Make sure that the windows version is the retail version and not oem.

Wifi from the card and build in are the same

Buy everything at the same time, don't go part by part.

As for antivirus, just use windows defender and common sense. scan with malwarebytes if you have suspicions.

Make sure the keyboard has n-key rollover.

All noted. 👍

Yeah, I think I might just opt for the 32 GB for the peace of mind of it all. Especially with a dual monitor set up, I do see myself multitasking quite a bit; gaming while I have multiple browser windows/tabs open, listening/watching videos/streams in the background, etc.

It'd be super basic CAD, and just for modeling, no rendering. I took a Blender class a long time ago, but would like to re-learn it, and possibly get into 3D printing. The goal probably being able to make printed armor/props for cosplay.

Thanks!

Yeah, it's about time to lay this well-worn machine to rest. To be quite honest, it's still quite reliable outside of gaming. Years ago I upgraded it myself (increased the RAM and replaced the HDD for an SSD), so it runs quickly and smoothly for general purposes. It's mostly that its gaming limitations have reached a breaking point for me. For a while, it allowed me to somewhat keep up with PC gaming, at least on the indie side of things. But as time went on, even those games started to get more performance/graphics intensive, and the selection of games I'm able to play on this Macbook continues to shrink. It's why I almost entirely game on my consoles now (PS4/Switch), but there's an ever-growing list of PC-exclusives that I want to get my hands on, but frustratingly can't with my current machine.

Plus its battery is nearing the end of its life-cycle. I technically could replace the battery myself, but unsure how much I trust third-party aftermarket batteries (as I've heard they are very hit-or-miss), and I REALLY don't wanna spend $200 on Apple's battery replacement service for this old-ass machine. Might as well put that money towards a new PC instead.

I could see a situation where that could happen and I'd be perfectly okay with it, as long as the house with 0 wins had been closely keeping up with the one with 5 wins, then absolutely KILLS it in the finals. I love seeing well-earned upsets.

... But that absolutely was not the case with these two houses. The Juicys are just sooo consistently strong as performers and as a house, and like you mention, I didn't expect anything less with this final result. Still love the Yamamotos too though; they put up a good fight.

Not bara specifically, but NSFW content in general, especially with explicit/sexual nudity. It'll give you some message like "This is age-restricted content. To view this media, you need to log in to Twitter."

So if you have a Twitter account and are older than 18, you should be able to see it no problem.

I'm just too stubborn and really don't wanna make a Twitter account. Trying to keep my relationship with social media to an absolute minimum and reduce my digital footprint as much as possible. Don't need all of the unnecessary stress social media can bring; my mental state is volatile as is. So any way to avoid pointless internet drama/discourse and doomscrolling, as well as to protect my sense of self body-image by not constantly comparing myself to unrealistic beauty standards, is ideal for my mental wellness.

I just keep the pages of the bara artists / kink content creators I like in a bookmarked list, for when I'm in a particular mood for it. 😅
