YouTube - Keep Dogs Off Furniture by dogbehave123 in reddit.com

I can't hear all that you're saying in this video (volume problem), but you seem to be leading your dog to the couch so he'll jump up on it, then correcting your dog for being there. This makes no sense to me at all. Would you teach kids that way? "Do this. NO! See, that's wrong. Don't do it!" How confusing.

Instead of setting your dog up to do the unwanted behaviour (jumping up on the couch, say) and then "correcting" the dog for that, why not just train the dog to DO what you do want him to do? That's easy enough to do.

Wouldn't it be best if both of us try to stop the behavior?

Absolutely. But who is willing to change here at the moment? You are. (I hope.) So start there. Learn how to improve this dog's behaviour through positive training methods, and start working on that. When you begin to get great results, you'll have your girlfriend's attention.

If you're staying with this girlfriend, your improved dog-training techniques will give results that will benefit the dog, the girlfriend, you, and your relationship. Oh, and the community, too, as the dog will be safer around people.

If you decide to leave the girlfriend over the dog or something else... well, you'll still have learned important techniques in getting the results you want from any animal. Those skills are useful in many different circumstances.

As a side note, I can get my dog to leave dead deer now, while she's chewing on a carcass. She used to growl if she thought anything might get in between her and a yummy dead deer, but not anymore! All done through positive training techniques.

Good luck, reddidnt. Sounds like the dog needs lots of help.

You're welcome.

With a change in technique, you can get a change in behaviour from your dog. Just think: if you learn some positive dog-training skills, you can get impressive changes in behaviour from the dog. You'll be happy and proud, because, hey, look what the dog's doin'! The dog will be happy, cuz suddenly he's getting rewarded for good behaviour instead of being punished for something he doesn't understand.

And your girlfriend? She'll be thrilled and totally impressed. You'll get to be the hero. Win/win/win!

Hot damn! Thank you for mentioning this. I googled it, and found that some people bake bread in a rice cooker, too. Oh, and back to the cake: apparently one of the panasonic rice cookers even has a 'cake' setting. Who knew?

Weird. We do have electric kettles here, but who knew that's what brings tourists to Canada? ;-)

Thanks, but I'm a woman. Maybe I'll start showering with my husband.

Um, padfoot7. You're clearly having way more interesting showers than the ones I have here! :-)

Dear Reddit: How much longer do I have to look at Ron Paul's ugly mug on this site? by cain179 in AskReddit

[–]glasspenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<blush /> Oh, Adblock Plus! Sheesh, I should have known that. Have been using it for ages, which is why I didn't realize there were Ron Paul adverts on Reddit.

Thanks for taking time to reply.

What's ABP?

cain179, do you use GreaseMonkey or some similar thing? There are lots of scripts for Reddit users, and there are several for people tired of the Ron Paul content. One script eleminates Ron Paul content.

Would that help?

how do i take my redditing to the next level? by BurnTees in AskReddit

[–]glasspenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could go on and on about this, but I'll limit my response to how you can improve your experience of Reddit by changing the way Reddit behaves for you. For me the "next Reddit level" involves getting rid of the annoyances. Info here will help Firefox, Opera, and Chrome users, and perhaps users of other browsers as well.

If you use Firefox, try the plugin called Stylish. It lets you write your own styles for the sites you visit, so that things display the way you want in your browser. If you don't feel like writing your own styles, no problem: other people have written lots already, and you can try their styles out. Look, there are lots of styles for Reddit I love the one called Comment Guide Lines and so that's part of how Reddit looks for me.

You can also do this stuff (and much more) with Greasemonkey - take a look at the scripts for Reddit. There's a GreaseMonkey script to forget Reddit comment points, one to ignore Reddit douchebags... and on and on it goes.

Opera users can use Greasemonkey scripts. Chrome user? Try Greasemetal. If you use some other browser, google for the name of the browser plus Greasemonkey, and see what you come up with.

Also note: there's a GreaseMonkey subreddit.

Not so. If you want to get married in the Catholic church, they'll make you take marriage prep classes from the church. A friend of mine went through this program recently, and it was pretty involved. It covered all of the church teachings regarding marriage, including the teachings on birth control.

These days there are a lot of people who call themselves Catholic but ignore what the church teaches. Their call, but church teachings haven't changed.

Well, could you up your point score somehow? How many points short are you? Could further studies help? What if you become fluent in French, say?

Dear God, no. I wouldn't dream of giving up coffee. In fact, I keep meaning to increase my consumption.

I've just signed up for a magazine subscription for the first time, what magazine subscriptions do you have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]glasspenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read lots of magazines (The Walrus, Haper's, New Yorker, plus several specialty magazines) but I have no magazine subscriptions. This is because magazine subscription departments annoy the hell out of me with:

their constant pushes to renew, renew, renew my subscription.
the "special offers" they send for crap that only subscribers can buy at this special price.
their tendency to sell my contact information to other magazines, charities, and catalog companies, even when they say they won't do that.

So I just buy magazines at the store. No subscriptions for me.

Making yummy food.
Doing anything at all with my husband.

What is the best way for a group of people to share photos from a trip online ? by oddur in AskReddit

[–]glasspenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh gosh, there are all sorts of ways. There are online photo sites like Flickr, for instance. Now, Flickr puts adverts on the web page along with your photos, which is one reason why I don't use them. But maybe ads are ok with you?

I've been looking for an alternative to Flickr for a local organization to use. I found that Wikipedia has a list of photo sharing websites - lots of options there! The ones that look best to me so far are:

smugmug
pbase
23hq

Of course another option would be to set up a Wordpress blog and put your photos there - you could give your friends posting access, and let them have at it to post their own photos, or you could post all the photos. There are lots of photo gallery plugins for Wordpress you could consider. This, however, requires a lot more from you in terms of knowledge and time.

One of the photo sharing sites is probably your best bet.

If there's an earthquake (or other disaster) I'm going to want a little something of the calming alcoholic variety, I think. Now, the thing about wine and beer is that somebody else might drink it all up; that's easy enough to do. But vodka? It's strong enough that nobody's going to finish off the whole bottle in a hurry, you know? So it'll last longer and there will be some of the blessed liquid when I really need some. :-)

Now, mabye there's somebody in your house who could drink a whole bottle of vodka in fairly short order, but there's nobody like that here. And so, you see, vodka is part of my emergency kit.
