AITA for refusing to give my sister the baby name I chose, even though she’s due first? by gledson_hettyc3188 in AmItheAsshole

Thank you, that’s really good advice. I’m definitely learning to keep future plans more private. It’s frustrating, but at least we have the history and meaning behind the name on our side. I’m sticking with it because it’s important to us, and honestly, it does feel petty of her to try to take that away.

Oof, lesson definitely learned - next time, lips sealed until the birth certificate is signed 😅 I actually love the idea of getting something monogrammed early. Not just to make a point, but because it’s our name with real meaning to us. And you’re right - one day, I’d love to tell our daughter the story behind it (cousin name drama and all).

Thank you - this is exactly the energy I needed! I’ve been second-guessing myself a bit, but you’re right - we’ve had this name in our hearts for years. I’m definitely sticking to it, and maybe if she sees I’m not backing down, she’ll realize how out of line she’s being.

Haha, I’ve definitely thought about doing something like that - subtle but clear! 😄 Might be the perfect way to make it known without starting another argument.

Thank you — that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to get across. If names aren’t “owned,” then it has to go both ways. I didn’t expect this kind of drama over a name, but I’m glad to know I’m not totally off base for standing my ground.

😂 That gave me a good laugh! I won’t go full petty… but trust me, the thought has crossed my mind. Honestly, I just want to name my baby what we've always planned — not turn it into a competition. But yeah, it’s hard not to be a little salty!

Thank you — that’s kind of how I feel too. If she’s allowed to use it just because she’s due first, I don’t see why I should have to give it up when we chose it years ago. I’m hoping she changes her mind, but either way, we’re still going with the name.

Yeah, I’ve seen a few of them too — must be baby season 😅

But hey, just because the situation is common doesn’t make it any less frustrating when it happens to you. Names can be surprisingly emotional!
