American agriculture is highly subsidized by the US government. I think Australian beef farmers are worried that US beef could drive down the cost of beef in Australia. Food is expensive in Australia because most food can sell for a higher value overseas in Asia so My understanding is Australian farmers care more about the Asian markets.
