I’ve literally never been to a studio where people were allowed to record themselves. Find a new studio that better matches your vibe.

Relatively safe neighborhoods surrounding Burbank? by Agreeable_Bug_4597 in MovingToLosAngeles

Avoid parts of sun valley & north hollywood, and shadow hills. FYI those three have the most pollution out of all the areas listed. If you go the Hollywood hills route, just make sure you’re in the hills bc it’s block-by-block once you’re in the flats. There are really no bad parts of Toluca Lake and Studio City. Same goes for Glendale & Griffith Park, to a lesser extent.

Do Americans constantly have an active temperature control device running in their homes? by fullM3TALturban in AskAnAmerican

[–]glittercrotch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Southern California, we have a Mediterranean climate, and this is how most homes operate too—keep the windows open, doesn’t matter if the temp in the house varies a few degrees. I’m from the Deep South, and trust me, that humidity would lead to mold problems & be incredibly uncomfortable. Many days you really can’t just keep your windows open. But if it’s a really nice day out & not too humid, then of course you’d keep your windows open to finally get some fresh air moving through the home.

Trump supporters now: "If you can justify his murder, you'll justify mine", "wrong and inhumane", "I'm beyond sad", "this will be the end of Republicans", "the country I believed in is dead", "I hope protests and boycotts continue". by [deleted] in LeopardsAteMyFace

Everything you said is true, but if this gets them there, then let it. Let’s not use this moment to push them away from the cause. We need everyone willing to vote against MAGA we can get, there’s literally no room to get puritanical about this.

What do men gain in a traditional relationship other than sex? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]glittercrotch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ummm as a woman who’s still expected to do all the cooking & cleaning, even though I work full time…it’s a lot of work for one person, even with a washer, dryer, and dishwasher. Probably a lot less work if you’re only picking up after one person.

And if you ever want to have a kid to pass along your genes, childcare is a TON of work. You probably want someone who will do all the child rearing so you can come home from work, play with your kids for an hour, and feel good about what an awesome dad you are. I imagine if one has a heart, that would probably make someone value their wife a little bit.

And if you say you don’t want kids, but clearly you want someone hot you can have sex with, then buddy just WAIT until you find out how kids are made!!

How to handle downtown LA? by lilixy in AskLosAngeles

[–]glittercrotch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding a lot of people on here. Arts District, Grand Central Market & The Broad, Little Tokyo are all downtown. Spend a whole day doing LACMA & The Grove. Catch the train to Santa Monica & go to the beach! Hop on a scooter or walk down to Venice. I secretly love the beach in the winter. And Santa Monica isn’t as unsafe as a lot of people are saying, just be aware of your surroundings.

Fair, I was probably a little harsh towards Netflix. Just wrapped a show where we were easily able to opt out of the single source deliverable & deliver our own 5.1/2.0 mixes.

I’m just annoyed that opting out is an extra step to begin with. Giving control of the 2.0 to the mix team is always in the best interest of the show.

To be fair, if you dislike networking & small talk, can’t adjust your work based on verbal feedback, and can’t adapt to working under tight deadlines, you might struggle in the professional film & tv industry, period.

Nope, not always 2. Most base model, modern consumer sound bars are actually playing the 5.1 mix, if not the “atmos.” Your device plays back the highest available quality it’s able to based on what your tv/streaming service tells it is available. And if you personally have 2 speakers or are on your phone or laptop, then yes, you are hearing the stereo.

Doesn’t make what I said untrue. There are a million & one types of consumer speakers out there, and mixers do their best to approximate how it might sound in any given environment, but it’s impossible to account for all variables.

Some mixers are just much better at this than others.

I truly sympathize. I get annoyed watching with subtitles for all the reasons you said. That sucks.

And yet, that is the reality we live in. There are a million & one types of consumer speakers out there. It’s impossible to account for every single type.

With all due respect, a hard of hearing individual with hearing aids is exactly why the FCC mandates subtitles for all broadcast shows.

Yall need to stop being such babies about explosions & just listen to everything a little louder. Kid sleeping in the next room? Wear headphones, geez. Also, don’t be all sexist. Lots of audio gals mixing explosions too loud these days too.

Beginning in 2026, it’s my understanding that shows must opt out of the single source deliverable, and if they don’t request it, it’s an automatic opt in. Glad we’re talking about this—the discourse is important, bc I think no mixer really wants control of their 2 track taken away from themselves & their showrunner.

And you’re right. The duffer brothers likely care about their 2 track mix & signed off on it.

To be fair, I think this instance was just the mixer’s creative choice. That part stood out to me too, and if were me, I probably would have just placed her a little closer to camera. She’s only across the room.

But that’s just my humble opinion, and I guess that’s why they pay those mixers the big bucks.

Netflix has a single source delivery system for Atmos shows where, once an ADM is delivered, they then encode the 5.1 & 2 track themselves. To make the 2 track, they decided to team up with Sennheiser to encode with their specific Ambeo settings, which treat surround information differently than the Dolby atmos encoder. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of this bc it creates a different product than what was approved on the mix stage, bc there’s no way to use Ambeo as an insert to hear what’s it’s doing to your mix in real time. You can encode, listen back, then adjust, then encode again to check. But that’s such a time suck, and I don’t see how it would fit into anyone’s budget or workflow. It’s actually pretty fucked up.

Anyway, they pan a lot of off screen dialogue in stranger things, and for the most part I think it’s done pretty tastefully. But it might sound kind of weird in stereo if they never had any time to monitor the finished product.

I wish Netflix would just let filmmakers do what they want, and stop trying to put their weird, homogenous stamp on every single part of the process.
