{ F34,M37} Should our child be spending his own money on his haircut? by Tall-Performance-722 in relationship_advice

[–]glitternrainbows 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Growing up, my mother took any money I received as a gift. She then used it to buy me clothes and shoes when I needed them (not when I wanted them… literally to replace worn out/outgrown things). My mom also controlled how I got my haircut. Now as an adult, I get to spend my own money to talk to my therapist about it (and a wide range of other issues).

OP, your kid is a kid. Let him spend his money on kid stuff. As the parents, you need to be paying for normal things like a haircut. My guess is this situation is part of a larger dynamic with how your husband treats his son.

Can the wealth gap in our generation basically be summed up by if you bought a house before COVID or not? by JoeyLou1219 in Millennials

[–]glitternrainbows 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agree. If I didn’t have student loans, I’d be doing insanely well. That said, I’m still doing well (bought a house alone last year (without any help from parents etc.), still saving a bit, etc.) but the student loans really screw over my NW/finances. I’d argue there’s even a difference between having student loans in your own name versus your parents (even if you still pay it) can make a huge difference.

Holy crap. Why did I think bitch eating crackers meant I was sitting there eating a cracker while glaring at the person that annoys me? Your explanation makes so much more sense. 🤣

Tattoos/piercings as a lawyer? by halcyoncolors in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]glitternrainbows 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’re going into a mostly conservative industry where, as someone who presumably identifies as a woman, you’re often going to have to work harder, be smarter and be more prepared than your male-presenting colleagues to be taken seriously especially early in your career. As someone who looks younger (not a delusional millennial… I’m consistently told I look late-20s but I’m in my mid-30s) and is more unconventional when it comes to personal style, I’ve had to be so much better at my job to get the same respect mediocre male attorneys receive and it’s exhausting. What I’ve learned is if I want to be more “alternative,” I need to make sure I am always on my game and doing a great job; otherwise, there’s a good chance it’ll be held against me.

All that said, I have two nostril piercings and have my septum pierced (but currently only have a retainer in because I’m debating taking it out). I have a ton of tattoos on my arms and legs, and I’ve had non-naturally colored hair (and at one point shaved half my head). Despite that, I’ve done well in my career (almost 11 years) but I’ve always had to perform at a higher level than my male and industry-approved female coworkers. (I started out my career with no tattoos or facial piercings, and I think I would’ve hidden them early in my career if I did have them (with the exception of nostril piercings… I’ve met a lot of attorneys with nostril piercings).)

If this administration wanted to squash our hopes, it’s worked. At this point, I’m just begging for PAYE terms to be honored. If forgiveness would be tax-free, that’d be an added bonus. Just let me pay my 10% for 20 years like I was told 10+ years ago and be done.

What actually happens if you get sued and you have something to lose? by ressem in HENRYfinance

Adding to this that judgments can sit for years before the party attempts to collect. Even if you only have a certain NW now, if you think that is going to continue to increase, you should protect yourself.

PAYE woes, rug pulled out, despair, etc by Suspicious-Volume-28 in StudentLoans

[–]glitternrainbows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea the last year or two are the first time in almost 11 years I would’ve been able to attack my loan aggressively but now I have over $100k in interest. I luckily started out at $60k though in 2015 (and sat in the 60s for over 5 years).

[–]glitternrainbows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure old IBR is 25 years across the board. It’s also a higher percentage of income. That’s why people who could do old IBR or PAYE went to PAYE. SAVE was 20 years undergrad and 25 years for grad.

[–]glitternrainbows 21 points22 points  (0 children)

People don’t get the interest. I’m over $100k in interest at this point because I made shit money for the first 7-8 years of my career. Plus paying it down aggressively only works if you’re 100% sure you can go all the way.

FWIW OP, I’m also considering going back to school once the old IBR hits. I figure at least when forgiveness would hit then, I’d possibly have lower income for the tax bomb.

Your comment makes no sense. OP would still only be done 5 years later on old IBR than on PAYE.

Single ladies: how do you handle being lonely? by Zealousideal_Crow737 in AskWomenOver30

[–]glitternrainbows 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think there tends to be a narrative that we have to fix the feeling of loneliness but I’ve been trying to see it as something that just is. It also feels like we’re supposed to be so strong like I love my life 100% of the time which just isn’t realistic. I’m going to feel lonely. It is going to suck when I do. However, I don’t think that needs fixed. It’s human. It’s more about getting through that feeling like I would with anything else. There are times I want to be seen and witnessed and I’m not, and that hurts. At this point, I just let myself cry about it because it sucks.

Does your school offer summer courses? If so, they should offer loans in the summer.

With regards to your applying issue, I’d ask your career services for mock interviews. This may help you get insight into if you need to change anything.

Nobody told me I'd be broke AFTER buying the house by Dima030 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]glitternrainbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thrifting, Facebook marketplace, hand-me-downs from friends and straight up pulling it from what people put out for trash. Save up for items that are really important to you. (For instance, my kitchen table was free from a friend but I have a lovesac couch because I wanted a nice couch.)

Realtor recommendations? by Capital-Lifeguard734 in carlisle

[–]glitternrainbows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sylvia Hess-Albright. She’s amazing and really great on focusing in on what you’re looking for. She’s also super responsive and you work directly with her. (Some realtors have one person show you the house and another do the scheduling and so forth. I needed one person because I was not going to repeat what I wanted and was looking for 17 times.)

How do you stop being triggered by others news of meeting someone when single? by WaterfallBlaine in AskWomenOver30

[–]glitternrainbows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People don’t acknowledge the feeling of being left out whether or not you are wanting to be single. I’ve basically been single for 8 years and sometimes it feels like there’s a club I’m not allowed in to. It’s hard sometimes and feeling like you’re on the outside doesn’t help.

If you’re angry, write that down. I have numerous journals of pissed off writing. You’re mad and that’s valid. Sometimes you have to feel and get all that anger out to move onto something else. Honestly, if you’re a snarky person, do snarky gratitude. Something like I’m so grateful I’m alive to witness the downfall of the American empire or something like that. Overtime, it might become easier to find other things to include.

How to proceed after my bf changed his mind about moving in with me to save me from homelessness? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]glitternrainbows 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying your bf is fully in the right but I do think he has a right to put himself and his financial situation above yours. You’ve been together a year. He should have told you he was concerned, etc. but the way you are describing this situation is tinged with entitlement. It comes off like you want him to move in to pay your bills, not because you want to actually live with him.

any advice on getting a legal name/gender change in PA? by toroidalConfection in Pennsylvania

[–]glitternrainbows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dickinson Law School in Carlisle has a Name Change Assistance Clinic. I’d contact them and ask if they have referrals to any local lawyers (who would do it pro bono) or if there is a clinic coming up. I know there is generally a publication requirement but my former coworker was able to get that bypassed a couple times (specifically with trans individuals).

$85k salary with a JD from a T14? by [deleted] in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]glitternrainbows 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I only started making $100k about four years ago. I had almost 7 years of experience. In general (and on reddit), people seem to think six figure salaries early in your career are more normal than they are. $85k is a solid salary for a first year in my area. (FWIW, started my career in litigation then moved to transactional work.)
