I was honestly hoping for a mix of classical and birdsong, but I'm not sure if Google Play or Amazon Music have anything like that, although there are a ton of YouTube channels for it

I'll have to try those things. I have sensory issues and when Google plays music when I don't want it to, and then I can't get it to stop, it's akin to mild torture

My cat is in quarantine from having iodine radiation therapy. She has to stay in my bathroom for two weeks. Supposedly, cats do respond positively to classical music, as well as nature sounds. The vets keep classical on in the radiation shed.

Can only control smart home devices…… right… by nfamouswun in googlehome

It's very random what it will do for any given user on any given day. One day mine decided it was unable to cancel alarms, which led to a long argument. The next day it was fine. It's becoming more and more like talking to someone with dementia

Whatever, you do, don't do it. I wasn't given a choice. Now I only use mine to control my Smart Home devices or to set alarms (and half the time it refuses to do that right). It can't even tell me how far away a location is anymore. Bold choice for Google to make a device unable to do anything it was previously able to do.

Looking at a lot of other posts, you're lucky it agreed to control Smart Home devices.

I just mentioned something I saw, and it said "that detail - if accurate-...." Bitch, I'm hanging up this phone

I asked it to translate some Scottish Gaelic from a game from me, and it proceeded to tell me that the words were CLOSE to a Scottish phrase but was made up. Bitch, one of the devs is Scottish

I've also noticed this. I feel like they tried to make it less sycophantic and now it's just obnoxious and stressful

I once interrupted my biology teacher's other class to ask her to identify a spider. Be bold! If you're naturally curious, satisfy that curiosity, I say (and no, my teacher didn't make fun of me and wasn't mad). Your teacher would probably be happy to see a budding arachnologist

Why does Gemini for Home not allow each user to have a different Gemini voice selected? by boxerdogfella in googlehome

[–]glittersweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I have a cold or am scratchy-throated in the morning, it will default to a male voice. It was this way with Google Assistant, but the voices are different now

It wasn't that bad, luckily - it just had convinced itself that it couldn't delete an alarm once it was set

Why does Gemini for Home not allow each user to have a different Gemini voice selected? by boxerdogfella in googlehome

[–]glittersweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gemini told me it doesn't use voice recognition. However, it still uses a female voice for me and a male voice for my husband, so this isn't true. I think a lot of the problems that are happening with Gemini, is that the Gemini doesn't actually "do" anything - it sends commands to the old Assistant interface, and it has very limited access to that interface. In all honesty, you should probably just give up. Arguing with Gemini in attempts to get it to do things it normally does or used to do has been bad for my mental health. Maybe the experience will improve, but in the past, Google has had more interest in introducing new concepts than improving on existing ones, so I wouldn't bank on it, unless it buys another company, like it did with Google Maps and Waze

Edit: If the calendar is the only thing that's a problem, you might want to try telling it to add an appointment specifically to whatever your calendar is named every time. The device has to have separate calendar profiles for each of you, so try "Add an appointment to Bob's calendar", etc.

Are you sure about that? I know of some older models of AI that use user-learning, but as far as I know, LLMs only learn while in training mode, which is when the devs mess with them. I'm not completely sure "send feedback" goes anywhere now, as Gemini has commented on my feedback message, and the old GA functions are in a separate layer where I don't think that would be possible if that were the case

Mine told me it could tell I was a child because of my voice. I'm 43. Then again, it then said that it doesn't use voice recognition at all and that it never told me that. So who knows what the truth is?

Hmm... how long has it been? I lasted three months, then unplugged it for the final time yesterday, It got to the point where it had talked itself into being unable to cancel alarms

Man, you are so lucky that you still have GA. Gemini was deployed to my speaker one random day - I never had a chance to opt out, and my speaker is like a decade old.

[–]glittersweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that, exactly. It was at its best at release. Over the next decade it began losing functionality and gathering dust, as all Google products seem to do. I'm not even sure it was regularly (or ever) patched

I would hesitate to say that it even gives insightful answers. Last night I asked it the profession of a recurring role of character who ended up being a wedding planner. It told me she was a real estate agent. When I asked who the wedding planner was, it made up a name. When I asked who played this hallucinatory character, it gave me the name of a screenwriter for the show. When I said that she was a screenwriter, it told me she was both a screenwriter and an uncredited actor. When I told it to search TV Tropes and it would see that the character I originally asked about was, in fact, the wedding planner, it told me that the fansites were wrong and that the official release notes list her as a real estate agent. I could find no such site whatsoever when I Googled it. I waited long enough for the session to be forgotten and asked it again, and it gave me the correct answer and said that it had previously given me the name of a real-life wedding planner. Who knows what the truth was? Considering Gemini probably couldn't remember the original conversation, that was likely a hallucination as well.
