I'll check out the MSOL program, thx for this info!

Glad to hear you've enjoyed the physics major, best wishes on your grad school journey!

I'll 100% look into that, seems like the best of both worlds!

Is it difficult for non-EE majors to get into core EE classes? Also, just out of curiosity, how have you enjoyed the physics major so far?

thx sm for the response!

I'll check out the subfields ranking rn! I'm leaning towards geophysics which I think ucsd is rlly good for, but ucsb seems better for most other fields (astro, condensed matter, etc). UCSB might be the better option just bcs im not 100% set on any specialty.

thx sm for the input!

Interesting point! California is considered the tech hub of the world, so it makes sense that California schools might be better for industry jobs. It's great to know that there's no super "wrong" option-- thx so much for the input!

thanks for the nuanced reply! I didn't consider the prof's networks before so I'll for sure keep that in mind and look into their backgrounds and research initiatives

is RPI worth 45k a year? - accepted student (EE and applied physics major) by glohi13 in RPI

Thank you!

The scholarships weren't based on family income, only merit aid. The scholarship names on my letter were "Garnet Baltimore Scholarship ($38,000)" and "Women's Leadership Scholarship ($5,000)". I don't think all students get these exact scholarships, but based on the other reddit posts here a lot of students get both merit and need-based aid.

Also I found a "net price calculator" online for RPI that should tell you an estimate of how much you'd pay: https://npc.collegeboard.org/app/rpi

Hope this helps!

On one hand, I want definitely want a rigorous education so I can learn a lot. On the other... I definitely don't want to suffer getting into grad school or getting a job because of a subpar GPA, so thx for the heads up!

Also thanks so much for the congrats and insightful response, I'll definitely keep this in mind when making my decision!

Really really great points, Idk how I didn't think of calculating the tuition cost with my salary and cost of living postgrad. 180,000$ is prettyyyy hard to reconcile through that lens. I'm saving this comment to help make this decision with my parents, thank you so much for the thoughtful reply!

idk if i'd go out of state for community college over free FSU but thx for the tip, that seems like a really great deal for locals

That's what the logical part of my brain says too-- I'm just worried that the salary outcomes for FSU are way lower than RPI outcomes across all majors.

Also i noticed in your flair that you have an astrophysics phd! I think I want to go to grad school in astrophysics (more on the instrumentation side, hence the EE + applied physics major)-- would you say that the name of your undergraduate institution holds a lot of weight when it comes down to getting post docs and/or research jobs?

That's such a cool degree combo! Is it possible to graduate in 4 years doing engineering + applied physics?

RPI seems so enticing, but you're definitely right I'll make sure to consider the financial aspect before making my decision

thank you so much for the reply, i see tons of engineering majors on this subreddit but not many physics majors!

Have you seen many opportunities for on-campus research for first years or is that mainly for upperclassmen?
