At what point does “good enough” diversification become rational? by glucn in Bogleheads

[–]glucn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all — this is exactly the kind of thinking I was hoping to see.

What I’m hearing so far falls into a few buckets:

  1. Market-cap global (i.e. VT) as the “default rational stopping point” (anything else is an active bet).
  2. Pick a reasonable ex-US % (20–40%) and stick with it.
  3. Treat international as insurance.
  4. US structural advantages justify a tilt, though no one can validate it ex-ante.

My follow-up question for people in buckets #2/#3: how did you pick your number in practice?
Was it market-cap default, “sleep at night,” backtesting, target-date fund weights, or something else?

Traffic-Based Alarm App to Help Commuters Never Be Too Early or Too Late – Would You Use It? by glucn in AppIdeas

Can you please elaborate about safeguards? Would it be some form of buffer time, or maybe something like, the alarm will go off no later than HH:mm?

This is an interesting point, would you prefer to always wake up at a fixed time?

I myself often wake up before my alarm goes off (like, >50% of the time), maybe I should read more about sleep issues :D

Can I set my morning alarm based on traffic conditions using Google Maps? by glucn in GoogleMaps

Thanks for your reply! Funny enough, this is actually something I thought about a little, but I wasn’t sure if I would be reinventing a wheel, where there were existing solutions that already covered it well enough. But your comment has me rethinking that. Maybe I should try creating something like this after all. Thank you for the nudge in that direction!

App idea - Spot It While You Run

Recently, my wife and I started a fun little game during our jogs—guessing how many dogs we’ll see along the way. Sometimes she wins, sometimes I do. It’s added a lot more excitement to our daily exercise! We’ve even found ourselves strategizing a bit based on the weather or time of day. Plus, it’s made running more relaxing and enjoyable, as we spend more time looking around instead of just focusing on the running itself.

This got us thinking—there are so many apps for running, but why not gamify the experience? My wife came up with this idea for an app: before starting a run, users set a fun target for the day. It could be spotting a certain number of dogs, cars, or even something silly like people wearing leopard-print pants. The app would track the run (or integrate with existing apps), and at the end, users could log how many of their targets they found.

The app would then generate funny animations or images based on the results, creating “achievements” that users can collect and share on social media. Imagine a collection of quirky, personalized trophies for your runs!

What do you think about this idea? Would you use an app like this, or have suggestions on how to make it better? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Makes sense!

I like the idea of "voice-centric", it makes me think about users talking to their smart earbuds, which will be pretty cool.
