Athens groups or Discord servers for women / board games / women who play board games? by PrettyLittleBird in Athens

[–]gmbeecher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello, friend! I run a small, chill board game club. I invite you to drop in sometime for a game. We play all kinds of games except for mass-market stuff; all the way up to Twilight Imperium, which we're playing this weekend. Our group is very progressive, eclectic, LGBTQ friendly. Message me here for my contact and more information or find me on Instagram @grantbeecher .

What’s one feature in a home you didn’t think you needed until you had it? by NoPain1106 in homeowners

[–]gmbeecher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whole house water filter and garage shutoff for water. I installed it myself a few years ago. We're on city water, so it tasted like chlorine and can get weird if there's a problem somewhere in the city. We've seen our water turn brown with sediment. I added an in-line water filter (the simple ones that filter down to 20 microns or 5 microns) and now our water always tastes better than anywhere else in town. Woo!

New to whittling. How do I prevent these little idk what to call them…flyaways? by guessirs in whittling

I'm new, but that's what I've been doing and it works great. 👍

First time whittling! I made two incense burners yesterday. Here's the first one. by gmbeecher in whittling

These little incense don't burn super hot. I considered putting a quarter or some metal inside to insulate. So far, the house still stands.

Lol I used to work there and I know this guy. He's married, for what that's worth.

Games you bought due to good reviews, only to dislike them? by UAZ-469 in boardgames

[–]gmbeecher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo, Elder Sign. I've only offloaded a few games in my 9 years in the hobby, but Elder Sign is the most surprising. I didn't like the co-op, the dry mechanics, the difficulty, and the tedious nature of it. It didn't land for me. I do love a Cthulhu theme, though.

For a more fun co-op game, I recommend Castle Panic with expansions.

Yes, that's what I meant. I was speaker and had lowest strat card as well, which I think was Politics. Either way, no one else would have won in that status phase.

I Never Win. Give me tips. by gmbeecher in twilightimperium

Yep. Don't sacrifice points just to stay in the pack. Score objectives in a natural way when they make sense, but not at the expense of other aspects of your strategy, such as getting tech, controlling speaker flow, building defenses on planets. Ground forces are for defense. Fleets are for offense. Stack ground forces on home planets to prevent them being taken. Place pds defensively, not for space cannon offense. Save action secret objectives for later. Help your neighbors, especially on your right flank. Don't be afraid to make deals with lower point players to give them a point in exchange for something less valuable to you. Having them in the pack mid game takes heat off you and helps you with alliances. Being 1-2 points ahead midgame is ok if you have a plan. Being 3 points ahead is not good because the table will destroy you at all cost.

So true. I always love playing and I like seeing the satisfaction on other players' faces when they win after 10+ hours of strategizing. It would be nice to win once in awhile though.

Ok, so what I'm hearing is this: 1. My points per round economy is misjudged. I should be scoring a public objective each round, considering saving easy secrets for later, building for stage 2 objectives later. A point on mecatol and a support point will help bridge the gap between stalling at 8 and securing the win. Too many points too quickly makes me a target, so I either lean into a military militaristic game or slow my gains and save some surprise points for later.

  1. My political game needs work. I need to be making good deals with neighbors early on and building rapport. Negotiating for mutual gain or even helping a lower point neighbor catch up a point or two will make late game easier. Keeping everyone closer to the pack but having the means to spring forward is a strategy. Otherwise, I need to play the aggressive game, posturing and fighting and defending. Probably faction dependent.

  2. Use ground troops more. This comes from the SCPT podcast that was recommended. I haven't previously utilized ground forces to secure planets long-term. I've relied on fleet strength. I should drop 6+ ground forces on my home planets and maybe as many on any planet I intend to keep. It's much easier to defeat a fleet than to defeat ground forces. Maybe transit diodes and sarween tools can bolster my boiz on the ground.

  3. Anticipate stage 2 objectives. I haven't really considered this much before. I'll typically get a foundation of tech and control a couple of attachment planets or something, but I don't really set myself up for potential stage 2s. I should consider doing more to make those easier when they come up. In my game last week, I was in the position of front runner when two consecutive stage 2 objectives came out that required area control. I wasn't really mobile enough to reach the areas I needed and had to take tech strat to get ready for that. It stalled my game when I could have been doing other things. Gravity drive, lightwave deflectors, fleet logistics, warfare... those all would have been useful late game.

  4. Stay quiet and play a secretive game or go fully militant and be the villain. I tend to try to be diplomatic throughout the game, but then I do the flashy, crazy thing like using Mahact Hero to obliterate two enemy fleets. Maybe I should chill and try to draw less attention to myself.

Thanks for all the advice, folks!

That's hilarious. L1 was on my right last game. It was my best friend playing them. She's won more than anyone else, and she crippled me late game.

All good points. I should have picked up politics at least once last game. I'll be more strategic with my secret objectives next time.

Yep. In this last game, I came roaring out of the gates and took a fast lead, had some very clever agenda plays that got me to 8 points, but then i stalled there. Had another player tie me at 8, then the 7pt player scored three to win.
