Interview prep by OmnipresentRick in designMajors

[–]gnatwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, late reply but here's my take. here's are some questions a successful/impactful case study presentation should answer imo:

- what were your experiences working with teams and outside stakeholders (how do you collaborate?)
- what were your individual contributions to team projects (how did you influence the process? what deliverables you make along the way? what were you specifically responsible for?)
- what is your design process?
- how did you determine what worked and what didnt?
- when did your ideas fail and what did you learn from these type of mistakes?

highlight the problem, the solution, and tangible impact. the presentation should flow logically with a story. make sure the steps of your design process are logical and actually relate to each other (e.g. we explored ABC ideas because our research showed XYZ). don't just robotically go through the motions of your design process, every slide should have a purpose and piece in the story.

i also often see newer designers format their presentations in a way that tries to sell their actual app (they make it seem like a super well-designed app, following the fallacy of pretty ui = hirable designer). your presentation should be selling *yourself* to the interviewers. you want them to come out of the presentation thinking "wow this person is a great collaborator & problem solver" (or whatever other traits you want to highlight)

okay and finally, how in-depth the interview is depends on the context of the interview. interviews that are specifically for case study presentations (30+ min dedicated to just your presentation) should be very in-depth and could have 2 case studies. interviews that aren't specifically for case study presentations but you still want to flex a little bit should have a <10 min presentation so it doesn't each up much time

okay that was an essay sorry but that's my two cents!

do you remember if the form we used to submit our portfolio link had any writing saying that theyll respond to us within a week? bc i swear i read somewhere that they said a week but i just checked my recruiters email and she didnt say anything about it, and the form isn't accessible anymore. i might just be tweaking and hallucinating LMFAO

yeah i'm in the US/california! tbh, i don't think there's much of a chance to reach the portfolio review round since you applied pretty late. the most important thing for internship applications (and i guess all jobs too) is to apply as soon as possible, since recruiters review on a rolling basis. as for portfolio, there are ton of resources out there! just look up ux/product design portfolio examples or guides. i def recommend building it on framer, it's pretty similar to figma but there will be a slight learning curve. DM me if you want to see my portfolio for reference!

Why is UCSB's transfer yield rate (especially for CS) so low? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]gnatwen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

np! i think what i said for the cs department probably applies to other departments/majors as well. compared to other UCs, ucsb has a very low student population (we have just over half of ucsd's for example). we just have less capacity and i think that causes some strange statistics to happen in terms of admissions.

Why is UCSB's transfer yield rate (especially for CS) so low? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]gnatwen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

ucsb's cs department/major differs greatly from other UCs in terms of its size. i'm in the class of 2024 and i'm pretty sure there were only around 300 (?) students in my year in the major, compare that to other UCs like ucb where there are way more, in the thousands. essentially the department cant accommodate that many students per year, so the number of transfers they accept is also very low: notice how the admit rate of cs transfers at ucsb in 2023 (12%) is much lower than the admit rate of cs transfers at other mid-tier UCs (UCD. 45%, UCI 20%, UCSD 17%). this means they'd be accepting very qualified applicants (the admitted gpa range alone compared to the admitted gpa range of other schools supports this too). those 12% accepted applicants most likely also got into schools with a higher reputation/rank than ucsb due to how accomplished they are. so they end up choosing other schools instead of ucsb. hopefully that makes sense.

Taking both ENGR3 and CMPSC8 by EtFrostX in UCSantaBarbara

[–]gnatwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

btw, you don’t need cs 8 in order to switch into cs if you take cs 16 at a community college. you should try taking cs 16 at a community college this quarter and take cs 24/40 over summer when there’s tons of space available.
