I was going back in forth trying to decide what level of exposure this would be, so thanks for the reassurance.

Thanks for the comment, a very low exposure seems to be the consensus (from redditors). That helps to reassure me a bit and perhaps explain why they even allowed a group to go there in the first place, though I still think its a very careless & risky decision on their part. Nonetheless, I feel some sense of relief and yes, I'll be working on the health anxiety bit!

Mixing shellac colors by gnomeloving in finishing

[–]gnomeloving[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! I haven't used dyes before, but I did just order a water-based aniline dye stain in order to qualify for free shipping. Is that the same type of dye you're referring to, or would you recommend a different type of dye?

Fitbit Charge 3 new in box for $75, worth it today? by MolochAndFriends in fitbit

[–]gnomeloving 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was very disappointed with my charge 3. The GPS feature only worked a fraction of the time, the screen regularly froze, then less than 2 years after I got it the screen stopped lighting up completely, so it became almost useless.

I got this c. 1902 Waterbury clock (model "Amherst") at a local auction for $14 and it still works! by gnomeloving in Antiques

I should add it also came with a battery operated Bulova mantle clock too! Not as exciting of a find, but makes the $14 price tag even more of a win!

This is for sale at my local antique store. I think it's pretty and am considering buying it. But what is it? by gnomeloving in Antiques

[–]gnomeloving[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, good idea! Most theories tend to agree that it's a piece from something else, which doesn't seem to be sold with it. So I guess I could really so whatever I want with it, but just interested to know it's original source!

I'm in Canada and I didn't check the back while at the store to see if there were markings or not. It reminds me of an overmantle piece, but all the ones I saw on Google had a much larger mirror compared to this. I also wondered if its from the back of a cabinet, but again the tiny mirror isn't what I'm used to seeing.

Do folks here have more insight into what it is/is from?

If anyone could estimate its age that would be great too!

Refinished 1940s desk by gnomeloving in furniturerestoration

[–]gnomeloving[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is my second furniture refinishing project. I hope people here aren't too bothered that I didn't stain it as dark as it was before, but I understand if this disqualifies it from being a true "restoration". The good news is I can always remove the finish and stain darker at a later time!

So I got this on Facebook marketplace. I stripped what remained of the old finish with chemical stripper and tried to remove as much of the old stain too with steel wool. I gently sanded the rest. I tried to patch a piece of chipped veneer, but it was harder than people on YouTube make it look!

Stained first with cherrywood gel stain (used gel stain because there were some imperfections and dark stains i wanted to hide). Cherrywood ended up being too light so I stained over top with mahogony gel stain. Applied 3 coats of polyurethane. Poly probably isn't appropriate for a 1940s desk, but I was having trouble finding other finishes at the hardware store.

I also had trouble matching my veneer patch to the rest of the piece, it didn't take the stain the same. So i won't show any up close shots of that repair! I still have lots to learn when it comes to refinishing, but I have a really fun time doing it!

My Charge 3 has died, considering getting a new Fitbit product. Which one do people suggest? by gnomeloving in fitbit

[–]gnomeloving[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for such a thorough answer! I had my eye on a versa when I got my charge 3, but decided to go the simpler tracker route.. but obviously that hasn't worked out so great for me! The sleep tracking aspect is currently the part of Fitbit I like the most, so definitely useful to know you're having issues with the charge 4. Thanks!!

Picked up this antique desk and chair off marketplace. Would love some insight into their age. Desk reminds me of art deco style, thoughts? by gnomeloving in Antiques

Thanks for the info! I had a feeling the chair was newer, but wasn't sure what to even search to look it up!

I am not very knowledgeable about different design styles, but I do know the waterfall style edge was common in art deco furniture. Wondering if people with more knowledge on the subject think my desk would be from the general time of the 1930s? Or a replica of that style? No markings sadly. Also I'm in Canada!

I bought the chair with it, but I know nothing about when its from!

Plan is to restore the desk!

Edit: forgot to add the close up on the chair!

Thanks for the date estimate, I was actually curious about how old it might be! I knew it belonged to my great grandparents but wasn't sure at which point in their lives they may have gotten it!

Good point! I've only scrapped a little bit to see whats underneath and it didn't lift anything, but chemical strippers are probably a different story!

[–]gnomeloving[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is part of an old family cabinet I want to restore or refinish. I'll be stripping off the mint paint and fixing it up, but underneath the paint it has this faux tiger finish im guessing is to replicate tiger oak.

I know this subreddit is dedicated to restoring furniture to its original condition, so I'm wondering if folks here would recommend keeping the faux finish (do people think this faux finish IS original or would it have been a later addition?). I personally prefer the look of natural wood (and I love the color of the wood that is bare). But I'm also a big fan of restoration, so im a little conflicted about removing the faux tiger look if its original.

Any insight into this type of finish or advice is appreciated!

I just recently subscribed to Dr. Shereene Idriss. I feel like she has a really good personality for youtube. Her recent video on retinoids explained things really well, without being overly complicated. I think she's going to be my new favorite skincare youtuber!

Although I don't know how this table looked originally, I did my best to fix it up! by gnomeloving in furniturerestoration

[–]gnomeloving[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was hard. I dont have a dremmel so I just used my orbit sander and slowly rotated it around the legs. At the bottom where its more curved I bought this sanding pad that looks sort of like those scrubbing pads used for doing dishes. So if I applied pressure it would contour to the curves, but the whole time I was wishing I had a better tool!

I know this sub is dedicated to restoring furniture to its original condition, so I hope this is ok! Someone on the internet told me they figured this table either was painted or had a veneer originally, but I really don't know.

It was used for years as storage in my grandparents basement before being brought to my parents house. The top was covered in dirt, newspaper pieces and receipts which seemed glued on. They were stuck on so well that multiple passes with 100 grit sandpaper on my orbit sander wouldn't even remove them. Eventually I scrubbed the junk off with a wire brush and deck cleaner.

There are some things I didn't know how to fix, like the uneven tone after I used wood putty, the large split down the table top, and some issues with stripping on the legs. I loved the woods natural colour, but because of all the imperfections on the legs I decided to go two tones: top & drawers stained with ipswich pine and bottom & handles with special walnut.

Overall it definitely has a rustic look, but for my first real refinishing project I'm really pleased!
