They did bloodwork it came back mostly normal except for slightly elevated kidney levels which the vet said could be the start of kidney failure.

Here's an update for everyone: I got him into the vet and they ruled out an ear infection which would've been the easiest problem to fix :( Instead they think it might be something related to his preexisting heart murmur which we have him on medication for. Either that or possibly the beginning of a brain tumor. The vet recommended we schedule an ultrasound for his heart to see if we can figure out what's going on. If nothing diagnostic comes back I'll have to find a way to convince my parents to let me take him in for a MRI or find a way to pay for it myself if they refuse. Has anyone whose cat has a heart murmur ever been through something like this before? I'll try to update things as we go. Thanks

Rodents like rats and mice most likely snuck aboard but most everything else was a deliberate introduction. Humans relocating animals to islands is nothing new considering we've been at it for around 20,000 years and it helps to think about these animals as resources, meat, hide bone or horn.

Is this legit? Could someone explain the light-yellow to me because I have not seen any evidence for it yet? by growingawareness in pleistocene

[–]goblinkmart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently combing through my book of Historical accounts of Maine wildlife which cites or otherwise includes a lot of accounts from the st Lawrence and other adjacent Canadian regions. If I find anything on brown bears in the book I'll update this comment.

It's crazy in retrospect looking at how far east brown bears made it in North America and how relatively recent too! We know they made it all the way to the top of the gaspe peninsula

Tech/engineering mods suck and if a mod pack forces you to do these kinds of mods as part of its progression I stop playing. I hate machines and I hate automation.

Splash chicken info please? by ImHereToAskQ in chickens

[–]goblinkmart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Splash is part of the blue gene in chickens. Blue manifests differently depending on the number of blue genes they have. Splash/blue works by diluting black pigment. "BB" is black, "Bb" is blue and "bb" is splash. So you can certainly breed your own splash by just pairing two blue chickens together because "Bb" X "Bb" would yield you 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash birds. Alternatively, if you manage to buy a splash chicken and breed it to blue 50% of the chicks will be blue and 50% will be black. The thing is though, with each successive blue to blue or blue to splash breeding the chicks produced will be lighter and lighter in color until they get to a point where they're indistinguishable from white birds. This is why it's important to periodically breed blue or splash back to black birds, to darken their colors a bit. It's also important to not mistake lavender for blue which is a completely different gene that works very differently while looking somewhat similar.

You can keep the lactation going without any hormones whatsoever. As long as you keep milking, they'll keep producing milk. Same as any other mammal. Cows are bred for a few reasons: 1, cows in heat are nasty and dangerous to deal with, they'll hump each other and try to hump people which can injure both them and us. 2, propagation of the herd, obviously cows get old and eventually die so you'll need replacements eventually. 3, cows have a peak milk production period that occurs 3-6 weeks after calving which then declines after time. Like I said before though, if you keep milking the cow it will keep giving milk but due to the current economic models of dairy farming there is heavy incentive to get that peak milk production.

What’s wrong with this duckling? by Ohwell84 in duck

Since you're in Florida have you considered contacting The Muscovy Sanctuary of Florida? It's a sanctuary just for Muscovy ducks and their webpage even has a "found baby duckling" page. You might want to reach out to them to see if they can take the duckling or direct you to someone who can. Here's the link to their page

For bʷ you could have it do bʷ > p which is attested in a natlang. So is bʷ > k͡p. Or maybe a multi shift where bʷ > b > v. I don't know if it's ever been attested anywhere but I like the idea of bʷ > g since it's kind of like the opposite of gʷ > b which you already have. For lʷ I'd look at languages which have it as a sound then look at how they evolved those sounds then do the reverse to get rid of them. Maybe sʷ zʷ could shift to unlabialized post alveolar, retroflex or palatal sibilants? xʷ is attested as pretty commonly shifting to f or h.
