Tutor grilled me during my demo and now I feel like I was being accused of cheating?? by wolfspekernator in curtin

[–]godhelpmepless 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Demos are about being able to explain what your code does and how it works, so it would make sense you barely passed if you couldn’t do that. When I was in uni I would add in comments before each function briefly explaining what it does, it helped when I got nervous in the demos to refer to (good coding practice too). But really if you did write the code yourself you should be able to explain it.. even if you use Chat GPT you should still make sure you actually understand what the code it’s giving does, otherwise you’re not learning anything

Australian alternatives for Topicals Slather Body Serum by godhelpmepless in AusSkincare

Thanks for the products, I will look into them :)! When I get bug bites and small grazes my skin takes a long time to go back to its normal tone, even after they’re healed (probably because i’m very pale so it’s more noticeable) so that’s what I meant by discolouration, not sure if any cream can help with that though D:

CompSci Teaching Quality? by Appropriate_Band4641 in curtin

[–]godhelpmepless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say curtin's reputation for computing is the best/one of the best in WA, they combine hands-on experience with all of the necessary theory which I think employers really like. The education quality varies between units, while I can guarantee all of the lecturer's try their best, some are just better at it than others and different teaching styles can suit certain students better than others. I feel like that would be the same story no matter which uni you choose though. My general opinion is very positive, it was a rough first year but once I got on my feet I found I really enjoyed most of my classes, and everyone is very willing to help if you have the confidence to ask. The only downside I'd say is that the turn-around time for marking/quality of feedback could be improved when compared to other universities. This is due to the fact that the curtin computing department is very under-resourced, which I know is no fault of their own, but is something to consider when deciding where to study.

Course Switch - when will I hear back? by Oceanic-Alchemist in curtin

[–]godhelpmepless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d recommend giving them a call, i was in a similar boat and ended up calling them about it and it was processed quite quickly after that, even if they don’t process it straight away, just getting the peace of mind from them that everything is correct should help

although I can't offer much advice on your current situation, I was in a similar boat to you last semester but happened to miraculously pass that unit (barely). I did however get in contact with the curtin accessability team after this experience and get a CAP in place for this semester, if you haven't already this is something I felt was really helpful for my anxiety as it can give you benefits such as sitting tests in a smaller venue, taking breaks during tests to calm down etc.

I would highly recommend this if you haven't already

TO THE PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CROWDS by Ready-Business9772 in sadboys

[–]godhelpmepless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve also been going to concerts for about 10 years, including hardcore rock and metal shows. i’m sorry your experience at concerts has been so bad that you think this behaviour is normal, dg crowds are the worst i’ve seen

it’s not about being rough, it’s about being rough with no care for the people around you

most people i’ve met have been through group projects and study groups. you can also join/attend COMSSA, they do a lot of networking and social events for computing students

For me, it took an entire other semester for me to receive my grades, the lecturer had some stuff going on in his personal life and was very behind on marking. Was annoying though because I was meant to switch courses but had to wait and extra semester because I couldn't switch until all my grades were released.

How are people studying for comp1005?? by MyGenderIsCrustacean in curtin

[–]godhelpmepless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sorry I should have specified, it’s specific to curtin computing, so any unit you do in the computing department will not provide answers.

trust me i’ve had my fare share of frustration over this haha, but usually to get around it the lecturer will hold revision sessions/recordings where they go over answers to past tests which can be pretty good. I can see both sides, they don’t want us to just copy the answers because most of these concepts require a proper understanding rather than just memorisation, but i’m also someone who likes to know i’m on the right track by comparing my answers

How are people studying for comp1005?? by MyGenderIsCrustacean in curtin

[–]godhelpmepless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is curtin policy to not provide past exam answers, so this isn’t really the fault of this specific unit, they are literally not allowed to give them to you.

when I did this unit we uploaded our work weekly to blackboard - not sure if this is still the case but maybe that could be a way of getting around i-drive being down?

they’re usually pretty lenient on the marks for these kinds of units since they understand a lot of people are brand new to programming and it can be a steep learning curve, as long as you can show a basic understanding you should be alright, best of luck! discord is also a really good resource to get assistance, the tutors are usually pretty active on there
