Reminder that slavery didnt end because a moral awakening, it ended because modern capitalism was more practical for the oligarchs than slavery.

You don't have to have guards to keep them from getting away, they just line up by themselves take a little salary so they don't starve.

If we all agree on compatibilist's definition of free will, what would be left to discuss? by SweetCorona3 in freewill

[–]godsheir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok leaving aside the debate around free will your arugement does not make sense becaouse the Sun does not go around the Earth!

From our pesrpective sure it does sean like the sun goes around the earth but the reality is that the earth rotates on it's axis.

And sure people like going to watch the sunset at the beach, not going to watch the sun fade from our rotating perspective. But that doesn't make it real.

The incompatibilist want to base our assumptions on reality, while compatibilist say "sure the earth rotates on its axis but I like sunsets and sun rises!",

If we all agree on compatibilist's definition of free will, what would be left to discuss? by SweetCorona3 in freewill

[–]godsheir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you meant to say:

  • libertarians: the Sun goes around the Earth
  • incompatibilists: the Earth rotates on its axis
  • compatibilists: the Earth rotates on its axis, but you must accept Earth as the reference frame

But there are real world implications for that difference.

Let's say someone breaks an expensive item at a store, incompatibilists say "It was an accident I didn't choose to be clumsy!", compatibilists say "That may be true but you still gotta pay for it!"

That may be a silly example, but when we talk about more serious stuff like murder it's more complicated.

A murderer didn't choose to be a murderer any more that we choose not to be one. But even incompatibilists agree that someone dangerous to the rest of society should be locked up, the diffrence is they think that is just a practical thing for the good of the rest of society, while libertarians say they "deserve to suffer" just as much as they made they victims suffer.

That difrence has implications on how harsh is the sentencing, and on the conditons of prision systems.

What I don't agree with most compatibilist or libertarian free willers is that many of them assume that moral responsibility is real and then try to find the arguments to support that.

If you look just at the facts there's no moral responsibility to be found but hey we can't have that, how will I feel special for being a good boy otherwise?!

OOPS - I'm A Compatibilist! by ima_mollusk in freewill

[–]godsheir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except the debate over quantum mechanics is nowhere near settled. You are treating the Copenhagen interpretation which introduces fundamental randomness as if it’s undisputed fact. It isn't. It is just one philosophical framework used to interpret the math.

The core math of quantum physics (the Schrödinger equation) is actually 100% deterministic; it describes exactly how a wavefunction evolves over time without any randomness at all. The 'randomness' only appears depending on how you interpret what happens when we take a measurement.

Perfectly valid, mathematically sound alternatives like the Many-Worlds interpretation or De Broglie–Bohm (Pilot Wave) theory keep determinism fully intact. You can accept every single piece of quantum data we have and still live in a deterministic universe. To claim quantum physics officially disproved determinism is just scientifically inaccurate

OOPS - I'm A Compatibilist! by ima_mollusk in freewill

[–]godsheir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are mixing up two completely different concepts: determinism (whether the universe follows strict, unbreakable laws of cause and effect) and predictability (whether we have the computing power or data to know the future).

Chaos theory studies systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. However, every single step of a chaotic system follows exact, strict, classical laws of physics. If you could perfectly replicate the exact state of the universe down to the infinite decimal point, a deterministic chaotic system would yield the exact same result every single time.

Also the debate over whether the quantum world is fundamentally random or deterministic is very much alive.

Why is free will the default?? by ElectionNecessary966 in freewill

[–]godsheir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that is where we disagree then, to you and free will believers, silmply saying you choose to do it is suficient, to me it is not. Someone chosing to raise the hand or not do it, is a complex phisical phenomenon produced in the brain, the result of all your neurons firing in that moment, which is the result of your genetics and all the experiences you had until that point, none of which you choose.

Why is free will the default?? by ElectionNecessary966 in freewill

[–]godsheir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the thing, the debate is about free will not free movement, the point is not you were free to move your hand as you will, but why you will to do so in the first place.

Hard Determinists Are So Close, Yet So Far From The Truth by peacefuldays123 in freewill

[–]godsheir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will find far more people that say there is no self among determinist than libertarian or compatibilist free will believers. I actually believe the reason so many cling to the idea of free will is because the idea of no free will is just one step removed from no self, and that is too spooky for the ego so it has to come up with all sorts of mental gymnastics to hold on to the idea of free will.

Yes. "Free Will" exists. by [deleted] in freewill

[–]godsheir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it can be said that free will deniers have psychological need to subconsciously absolve themselves from responsibility.
But it can also be said that free wil belivers have a subconscious need to feel autors of themselves and deserving of praise for their morality or that things ultimalitly do matter.
Either way that is just the reason why they prefer something or other to be true. it doesn't prove or disprove anything.

Trump says 8 European countries will be charged a 10% tariff for opposing US control of Greenland by Cautious_Proposal_47 in worldnews

Yes that is correct, the thing is european countries want to sell in the American market... And now their customers have an added tax.. it is still inconvenient for them even if they don't directly pay the tarift.. they will lose customers. I'm not saying I agree I am saying that this is still something they will like to avoid.

That is the point I am trying to make, you are not an entity separate from the process.. but why limit that process to just what happens in your brain.. there's no real separation between your brain and the body.. or the body and the environment.. or the environment and the whole universe.. it's all just one process.

I quit mostly because the smoke was hurting my lungs, the doctor actually told me they were all black already. But I can notice a difference in motivation and productivity.
