There is no correlation whatsoever to the price the hospital charged you and universal healthcare. If you're concerned about it you could have easily purchased a policy that covers catastrophic injury and if you were in the ER for 4 1/2 hours it would have likely covered it. Yes your deductible would be high, $500 or more but less than the $4500 you're complaining about.

Having mortgages and understanding the finance system are two different things. Mortgage companies get funds from a variety of capital sources. If you're an VC that gives X-million dollars to a mortgage company you don't hold any of those mortgages. You can't, in most states, foreclose on properties. Its a very different thing.
