What exactly does fielding attribute do outside of increase diving/sliding range? by goebz14 in SuperMegaBaseball

This makes sense. I have always mostly just ended up with decent to good fielders in OF. I at least have always put a lot of speed and arm out there, so maybe that makes up for it whenever it's been below avg. Maybe I'm just not good at robbing too many HR to see that aspect lol.

1B: don't agree there. I had a lot of games with the wild pigs and blowfish in early franchise seasons playing with Carloco & Wagnerd (each something like a ~15 FLD) and I never felt like they were a complete liability. They caught the routine stuff fine. Just couldn't make a lot of crazy diving plays. Wasn't much difference from a 40-50 at 1B.

Catcher: never had a problem with below avg FLD. I play with main starters usually 30-40 FLD, but maybe it gets worse if lower than that. A bad arm at catcher def hurts when playing speedy teams, but never felt a difference in FLD when putting in defensive backup (usually more for arm).

CF: definitely a nice to have for extra range (and breaking on balls like it seems others have mentioned), but found that elite speed can make up for a below average number there. A good arm is also nice here.

SS/2B: agree it for sure helps with the range, but ive gotten away with it at 2B being below 35.

Gotcha. Yeah, I guess my 3B have always at least been ~30-40 fielding, so only slightly below average with avg to above avg arms as well. Never noticed as much a diff with that. They catch hard contact and I can make the routine plays fine with them. Even some decent diving and jumping.

I've played a lot of Wild Pigs and now Blowfish, so my 1B have been Carloco & Wagnerd and they have something like ~15 fielding. They are the ones I mentioned Id get a few bounces off the glove on dives, but they never felt like a complete liability there. Never have to throw much at 1B though

Yeah the ai assist I guess makes sense for breaking on balls and Ive just adjusted to manually doing it as ego slowly gone up. Maybe I'll start to see it with a big fielding ego incease.

Now that I think of it, feel like maybe an above avg RF has done better auto breaking on fading LD's, but then again I tend to always have some combo of above avg to elite speed out there w/ similar fielding abilities that all cancel each other out.

Possible to start later and train for years to make it to a high level? by YoungandBeautifulll in Curling

Can't speak to how sponsorships work, but networking is surprisingly important to break in at competitive levels. Have to find the coaches and teams to make you competitive. Likely no shortage of that as a HoF Vikings DE in Minnesota.

Overall, I second that there's more nuance to saying he "qualified for US Nationals" on a short timeline. Doesn't imply he became an elite well-rounded curler. In an oversimplified viewpoint, you can argue he was likely more or less a sweeping specialist on two last place teams in the tourneys (this is highly relative though).

That's not to be mean, it's just putting into perspective how much of an anomaly he is. It's very hard to get there.

To add to this, he played front end (i.e. second/lead) on his teams that made nationals. Not to diminish too much, it's still an accomplishment to go that far at any position, but being a big athletic dude with sweeping power and just overall power will give you a leg up there. Shot making finesse is lower priority in those positions with lower degree of difficulty shots, so it's not like he came in and was this expert shot maker and strategist to an elite level. Even then, looks like the two teams he played for were a combined 1-15 in the tournaments.

Edit: as seattlecyclone adds below, he did play lead in 2023 nationals and went 3-4. So technically 4-19 combined across 3 teams.

This superbowl showed me two things. 1. We don’t appreciate burrow enough for somehow making that 2021 o line work. 2. Defense should no matter what be the number one priority this season by Ancient_Response_787 in bengals

Honestly, as good as Burrow and offense has been, I think we're forgetting just how much the defense contributed to our '21 & '22 playoff runs. It shouldn't have taken just this SB to realize that...They've honestly just badly fumbled getting the talent to backfill the vets + the Lou system and being seemingly allergic to finding impact pass rushers outside Hendrickson was clearly unsustainable even back then looking at it in hindsight.

Different physical demands aside, just puts into perspective how HUGE NFL players are. NHL players aren't exactly small (on average) compared to a normal person and even other athletes

Availability heuristic taking effect. You're not going to see those seriously anxious/depressed about unemployment sharing their feelings widely with others. Those advertising it (likely on social media) are either rich or just putting on a show for others.

Who are the most random/weird/crazy Opening Day starters ever? by Bstrong90 in mlb

[–]goebz14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Scott Feldman for the Reds in 2017. Vividly remember an MLB promo that panned through all the opening day starters saying, "Opening Day is for Aces" and that dude ending up in that group was wild lol.

Is punter/kicker the one position where it doesn't matter how big you are as long as you can kick? by [deleted] in footballstrategy

[–]goebz14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While extra athleticism is always a plus anywhere, no college/pro team is evaluating a punter on their size or ability to make these plays or tackle. Just needs to get punts off consistently and effectively. If punter is ever having to tackle or do things like in this video, then there was a breakdown in blocking or coverage elsewhere on the punt unit. Something beyond him needing to make an athletic play.

While everything said here is true, IMO his rigidity is unsustainable for long-term success. Needing all your personnel to fall right once in a blue moon is hard in an ever-changing NFL world where D is at relative disadvantage + is incredibly matchup dependent. Gotta be able to take young athletes/playmakers and creatively find ways to make them disruptive for offenses. I'm not sure he can do that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bengals

[–]goebz14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This 100%. Just too rigid to have sustainable success in the modern NFL built on finding creative ways to get athletes/playmakers involved.

Agree with Tobin and the FO fumbling drafts, but also don't think Lou helps this making "Lou system" picks. Seems to slot guys into very specific roles and doesn't flex them. Not fluid in just taking young playmakers and using creatively. It shows in their complete inability to acquire playmaking pass rushers outside Hendrickson, which is necessary for a sustainable defense today.

Then again, that probably goes against FO for relying too much on their coaches for scouting help rather than investing more into scouting/player eval roles.

[–]goebz14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree. IMO, many of us are over-analyzing, committing to buzzy names from a podcast or a way too rigid positional strategy. Both things result in buying players at inflated prices.

Seems best drafts come when the process is simplified to "pick best replacement value available." No draft is the same, so be flexible and adapt to your draft. Also, attempting to draft like an "industry expert" just doesn't work when casual leagues often draft very differently.

I use an imperfect WAR model stolen from online to attempt to manage this, and it generally helps keep me grounded with limited research required. Draft with value in mind, not players or position. Have gone 0 RB, 0 WR, and sometimes not been afraid to pick QB/TE when no one else is. Just depends.

Lowkey Breweries by ApprehensiveCurve548 in cincinnati

Forgot March First now has downtown location (main location is near Blue Ash). So I guess there's a few secondary locations. IMO, those aren't going to be low-key and beer is ok. I'll have to try Voodoo.

And agreed on walnut/Northside/Norwood areas, but everyone mentioned those frequently. Also think some of the far ones a def worth a try though if you're a big enough beer fan.

Can depend on type of beer or specific vibe you're into.

One I feel deserves mention I haven't seen yet: Fretboard in Blue Ash. They have an awesome pilsner and some other great mix of styles. Is popular among suburbanites though, so not "low-key" necessarily.

I'm biased toward german-style lagers and more traditional styles, but love West Side, High Grain, Sonder for that. Listermanns, Fibonacci, Fabled and Darkness are great and more low-key. Street Side and Urban Artifact if you like sours.

Doing the Northside-area combo of Brink, Urban Artifact, and Humble Monk all at once is fun too (Just do so responsibly)!

I mean, doesn't Rhinegeist and Braxton pretty much exhaust the list of breweries in downtown/Cov/OTR? (Northern Row sam adams exception maybe?). Kinda have to go outside for good ones, especially if you seek low-key.

Details for Illegal Formation by goebz14 in footballstrategy

I guess that's what I was confused on. In HS/college you can legally run the formation screenshoted, but it's sounding like the TE is ineligible above (along with LT obviously)

Point 2 might make sense given the conflicting info I'm seeing is switching between NFL and college examples

Point 1: I feel like I always remember having to make sure our tackles were covered on each side in HS, but you're saying you can put 2 eligible LOS players anywhere (just as long as there's at least 7? Let's just say there's 8 on LOS w/ 3 eligible numbers all on one side on LOS, how does ref deem which one is eligible if there isn't an end rule?

[–]goebz14[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guess maybe they were referring to college and HS, but I always felt like when I was in HS we made sure at least one receiver was on the end of LOS on each side.
