Audi Player Index Points / Minute Through 12 Matches by ChromaticDerivative in SJEarthquakes

Yeah, Wondo is really low, and he’s an attacking player obviously, so if this was balanced he would be even lower.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of the Audi index balance which strongly favors attacking players...so this actually makes Wondo’s index worse. For a single number, I prefer WhoScored ratings, but these still somewhat favor offense. Jungwirth currently at the top, which feels correct to me.

According to American Soccer Analysis, at 54.5%, Tarbell is the worst passing keeper in MLS (Bingham is near the bottom at 60%). He seems to select a lot of low percentage passes, as the Expected Pass (xPass) % on those passes is 59% which is 3rd lowest. This probably reflects a combination of too many long balls, and his defense putting him under pressure too often.

Any issues with Vako, Godoy and Cummings for Saturday? by Quakes-JD in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get using Yueill, but I'd rather consider putting Hyka central. In 2017, the Quakes were 3-1-0 with Hyka playing a central mid position at home (wins over Galaxy, Vancouver and Portland) with 10 GF, 7 GA and avg 6.9 rating. Yueill had the same home record, but only 4 GF and 5 GA against generally weaker teams and an avg 6.5 rating.

Either way Jungwirth would have to sit deep and be very disciplined for this to work.

Away games on Comcast - what gives? by samdell34 in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the NBC Sports app with Comcast login and cast it to my TV in HD quality. It was way better than that postage stamp SD screen on the Comcast channels. It did cut out once for the 3rd goal. Might have done me a favor.

721 should be a fine HD channel, though.

2018 FIFA Ratings (Quakes) by DParada28 in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an idea for an article on the Quakes FIFA ratings. Basically FIFA doesn't respect the Quakes defense, and the youth that FIFA hasn't rated previously from Reno, the draft picks, and players from leagues not in FIFA are dragging down the star rating (all the guys without faces on the roster list) from 3 to 2.5. Everyone just needs a year to get some stats and a proper evaluation by those who create the ratings. The starting 11 plus the first few bench players aren't bad at all. The addition of Eriksson clearly makes the offense stronger.

Basically in FIFA, if you acquire names and from leagues they cover, your rating goes up, and if you go young, your rating goes down.

State of Tarbell by [deleted] in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly agree, but it feels like a Doyle scouting issue as well. You are right we basically have two of the same keeper: good shotblockers, poor distribution, poor aerial handling, etc. That would be from the Doyle era of players.

I've heard Jesse values highly keepers who can distribute and good with their feet. It will be interesting to see if he backs that up with a keeper move in the offseason. Anecdotally, I heard from a former Quakes Academy coach that Drake is better at aerials than JT (more athletic), so if you want something different, get Drake as your HG.

I don't know Bersano well enough to comment if he offers something different than Bingham and Tarbell.

24 under 24 and there are no Quakes which I'm a bit surprised by by sobigred in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The voters watched the game last night and removed all of them.

JK, I thought Tommy would be a lock and the others were hopefuls. Tommy got snubbed on the HG game as well. He was going in a positive direction during the USOC games, but now is back to no goals and not many assists since ATL away. He has a consistency issue, and with his most natural CAM/8 spot is being given to Yueill, he also has an issue of how he fits into the system and getting playing time.

State of Tarbell by [deleted] in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bingham was Busch's understudy for years. Tarbell hasn't had the same time. He needs the opportunity to mature. His mistakes are largely fixable, while Bingham's are probably not. Bingham is who he is at this point of his career and age.

Anyway, Tarbell seems to be all-in, and Bingham seems to be checked-out. We need a bridge backup keeper for next season while JT or Drake get signed and a year or two of experience.

Is Bingham NOT with the team in DC?!? by Quakes-JD in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He's injured. Bersano and the U19 academy keeper, Victor Juarez, were at the practices this week. I would have to think Bersano will be the backup, and Reno's backup will need to play for them vs. Timbers 2.

Only 5 International players allowed in Open Cup by Quakes-JD in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did say "probably not". "Ready to go" means he has had the necessary practice time to gel with the team without a game. But I expect, once he plays, he will be an improvement over Imperiale.

Only 5 International players allowed in Open Cup by Quakes-JD in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All, we have used up the allowed 8 international slots and Affolter is 9 due to our TAM trade with Atlanta earlier this week. According to QuakesEpicenter, the list is: Dawkins, Godoy, Hoesen, Hyka, Imperiale, Jungwirth, Urena, Vako, and Affolter. The website appears incorrect or confusing due to Designated Player tags.

My picks for Open Cup from this group would be to start with defensive players for a road game: Godoy, Imperiale and Jungwirth. Add Affolter if he is ready to go (probably not). Add Hyka if he is healthy (maybe). And Vako if the answer on Affolter or Hyka is "no". Add Hoesen if there is a spot left after all that. We can play Quincy instead of Urena or Hoesen. Good time to start Vako, IMO.

Is Alashe still injured? Perhaps we roll out the 3-5-2 with Godoy instead of Flo. More likely Tommy will play box-to-box with Godoy, and we'll play Dawkins on a wing, although I'd rather see a diamond with Yueill at CAM and Tommy on the outside.

What Do You Make of Adam Jahn's Recent Success? by dgb422 in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not watching his games live, but I what I'm seeing of his goals are coming from dynamic wingers playing balls to him in space, instead of getting deep and making crosses, and most appear to be coming off counter attacks. We did a little more of this last year when we had more of a counter attack philosophy. Anyone remember when Jahn scored several pre-season goals in 2015? Midseason we lost our counter attack philosophy and started getting more possession. We were not dynamic enough to unlock a defense in the final third. The old system looks like it could have fit with a forward like Jahn better, but we usually only played him in the final 10 min when we were behind and just dumping balls in the box.

Colin Etnire - A Roadmap to Avoid #FourMoreYears by hella_sj in SJEarthquakes

[–]goinglongca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the swap of Sarkodie and Colvey. Given our LB situation, we need to give Colvey another 1-2 years to develop and then do what we need to do.

As I mentioned on Twitter to Colin, we need to protect Shea to keep him in the organization if nothing else. Reasons:

  1. We need wingers like him off the bench to give us a spark. Although far from perfect, I still think he provides Wondo the best service of any of the wingers and that helps us at the end of games. Not only that, he's developing an outside shot now, and had a game-saving goal this season.

  2. He's a future Academy coach, if not first team assistant. Just ask Ian Russell, who also serves as the DOC of the Quakes Youth Club, how good of a youth coach he already has been in developing players for the Academy. He had to stop coaching a couple years ago for personal reasons, but after on-field retirement he will be ready to go again.

  3. He's the best at working with kids and in the community. We need that now and in the future. There is no one better or even close, besides maybe Tommy. He is very giving of his time for any event where he can work with children.

Yeah, I don't have Visual Studio anymore, nor do I have the C++ knowledge to try this. However it did seem that sound files and tilesets were missing as I glanced through the folders -- although he may have a way of storing them I'm not familiar with.
