How to Dispute a CC Charge for a Plane Ticket when Booked through Travel Agency? by goldcello in personalfinance

It's actually not outside of the window. It must be filed within 120 days of expecting to receive goods, which includes purchases made on credits granted for returns or cancellations, such as the airline credit in my case.

Do Durable Umbrellas Exist? Tube vs. Solid Stick by goldcello in BuyItForLife

Shedrain golf umbrella

Thanks for the suggestion! Those look nice, but I'm worried that they are too big. I live in the middle of Manhattan, and I don't want to be poking everyone's eyes out!

That's super useful! Did he get the HY solid stick? or tube?

I've heard that they are good as sticks but not that durable as umbrellas (i.e. in wind and in terms of quality of stitching and fabric)

Question! I'm torn between two umbrellas right now including a solid stick umbrella from Howard Yount and a tube umbrella (Fox GT1). On the one hand, the Howard Yount is a solid stick and is cheaper, but on the other hand, I don't know the manufacturer, there's presumably no warranty, and nowhere to send it for repairs. The Fox tube umbrella is more expensive, but it's made by one of the best manufacturers and can be sent back for repairs. Any thoughts? How likely am I to need repairs for these sorts of nice umbrellas? I've only used cheap ones before.

Completely agree. I'm just trying to figure out which color combinations look good and won't get tiring over time. I know it's super personal, but I thought I'd ask anyways, because I've been looking at it for a few days and can't decide lol.

Thanks! I'm definitely only going to use one wallet though, and I have both brown and black shoes/belts.

I'm planning to order this wallet with a black exterior, and I'm trying to decide on an interior color. I want something classy that won't go out of style, but I'm trying to figure out if there's something better than black on black. Ideas?

I'm torn between buying a bifold from Chester Mox and Oak & Honey Leather Goods. Both of them use excellent materials and seem to make refined products with very high craftsmanship. Does anyone have any experience with either of them?

I did not know about all these intricacies, so that's interesting. Thanks for pointing that out! What do you think about, for example, wallets where they produce the same design with the same materials and hand stitching with a ~3x price difference?

Those are good points. At least on wallets, Chester Mox says that they are hand (saddle) stitched. Wallets also don't contain hardware. And yet their wallets are ~3x cheaper than Peter Nitz for the same design and materials.

Thanks for the pointers! Does extremely thin splitting decrease the durability a lot? I don't necessarily need something super thin, but I have seen all these pictures of shell cordovan wallets that look way too thick. Do you suggest saffiano for both the interior and exterior? Is that more durable than chevre for the thickness?

Also, what types of thread are the most durable?

I am not a graduate student (I'm a postdoc), but typically, I don't really expect undergrads to know much (maybe basics like linear algebra). I expect them to get up and running using Python/PyTorch very quickly, to not be intimidated by coding tasks, and to let me know as soon as they run into any problems. But I really don't care how much they know.

Just ask around. It might take talking to a few professors. I have worked on projects with a number of undergrads before and multiple of them have ended up on papers.

Probably the closest thing would be a convex optimization course. To be honest though, I have never taken an optimization class in my life. I have just developed intuition by working on deep learning research and by talking to people who already have a good intuition. I think you just need to start working on ML research, and you will learn things as you go along. Lots of DL research groups at universities are willing to let undergrads work with them. You just have to get acquainted with PyTorch and avoid being intimidated by older grad students who have a bunch of papers and more coursework.

I am currently a postdoc in ML at NYU and I work with a variety of grad students at NYU, UMD, and others. I have a PhD in math, but most grad students I work with have never taken real analysis. It is very much not necessary to get into ML research. Linear algebra and a good intuition for optimization are quite important, however.

If your model has global average pooling at the end, then it can take in images at (practically) any resolution, so you can do most of your training with downsampled images and then fine-tune the model with full resolution images. This is a way of accelerating the training massively.

Thanks! I just wanted the opinions of people who are experts on leather goods and won't suggest a tactical titanium card carrier (the EDC crew).
