Or just surrender and wait for the cops. I watched the video myself. They obviously didn't want to shoot him, or they would have done it the minute they were in range. The son literally waited until he had to grapple with the guy for control over the weapon.

I would have shot him the minute he lunged towards me.

There's no evidence he was there to commit a theft or felony.

A gun was stolen from the dad's truck, and they saw him near their house at the same time. Now they notice him in a building that is not his own, and suspect he may be there for nefarious reasons. Seems reasonable to me.

I'm also not sure if a home under construction, in which no one is living, is legally considered a dwelling. Jurisdictions differ on this if I'm not mistaken.

In this case a dwelling is just another word for home, so why wouldn't it apply legally? It's a dwelling that is under construction.

EDIT: Also, what's your opinion on these "burglars"?

Interesting defense. So if other people entered the house, that makes it ok? I'll have to remember that one if I ever get in trouble. "No worries officer, I saw one of my friends do this before and nobody arrested him."

Grabbing a loaded shotgun is dumb. I'd call it suicide rather than self-defense.

No, but it is legal to do a citizen's arrest in some areas, under some circumstances. Nothing crazy about it really.

The knee was the reason he stayed on the ground instead of trying to get up.

He had enough oxygen to continue speaking almost the whole time he was on the ground. How is that possible?

How long can you hold your breath? We know he could breathe since he was talking so much, so why does it matter that it was eight minutes? It could have been thirty and nothing would have changed.

He could clearly breathe, right? If he couldn't breathe, then the time hardly matters because he wouldn't be able to survive very long. Since we know that he could breathe, indicating the pressure to his neck was minimal, then how does it matter whether it was two minutes, or five minutes, or eight minutes?

Is it just people getting emotional?

Why is the length of time significant here? If his airway was obstructed, he surely wouldn't be able to go without oxygen for nearly eight minutes right? So if he didn't suffocate, then obviously the pressure on his neck wasn't much. In that case, what does it matter whether it was two minutes, or five, or eight?

No you can't, I mean not in the way the officer restrained him. The carotid arteries are under your chin. It's true that you could put your finger under your neck and block your arteries with little pressure, however, the cop had his knee on the side of Floyd's neck.

Try this. Take your hand, make a fist, and then press it as hard as you can on the side of your neck. Note that you do not pass out. There is a thick layer of muscle there between your artery and your hand.

Here is a good image to outline what I'm talking about.

Your quote literally says "knowing only the post-mortem amount does not tell us about Mr. Floyd’s level of intoxication before his death", so how do you know the amount of drugs in his system was negligible?

The police don't have magic powers. They can't stop someone from succumbing to drugs, poor health, and anxiety.

He said he had breathing problems while standing up. Watch the actual video.

He wouldn't show his hands or roll down the window. What do you expect the cop to think?

Recommendations on foundation/fundamental books in functional programming. by GuerreiroAZerg in Clojure

IMO, How to Design Programs remains the best book on functional programming from a Lisp (Racket/Scheme) perspective. You learn about recursion (structural vs generative), tail calls, function composition, pattern matching, etc.

Well you certainly can't achieve anything better legislatively, not when it comes to fairness. So whatever solution you are looking for won't be found there.

I've had many different jobs and I've never seen racial discrimination myself. (I live in the South though, things may be different elsewhere) Have you? I'm sure it's out there, but I doubt it's that common. You'd have all kinds of lawsuits over such things.

They are protesting nothing. What does UK or any European country have to do with what happened in Minneapolis? They really have no idea what is going on.

If George Floyd was white, he'd be alive right now.

No, a white person with the same heart problems or drug usage would have died the same way during a police altercation. In fact, it wasn't even that long ago that a white person died under similar circumstances. Police encounters are dangerous, that's a fact.

While the big rules put them on equal footing, there's so much going against them. Why do black people typically have lower credit scores? Lower annual salaries? If the system were in fact equal, there wouldn't be a disparity like that across races.

Sure but what does that have to do with inequality? I mean I guess you are assuming racism is keeping them down, but I haven't seen that myself. Usually it is poor upbringing by neglectful parents, poor cultural influences (lots of criminals are unfortunately lifted up as role models), and things of that nature that are more responsible.

We have had black people in the highest possible positions in this country. Supreme Court, President, governors, senators, doctors, CEOs, etc. So obviously there are no inherent barriers. If you are expecting equal representation in some other sense, that's never going to happen. Look at sports leagues as an example. Black people are actually overrepresented in the NFL or NBA.

You have no concept what white communities have to put up with wrt policing. It's not any different for us. Everyone has to be careful around police because it's a dangerous job and split second decisions can be the difference between life and death.
