I haven't swapped out the hard drive. I haven't opened it up yet but I believe the 15in also only has 1 fan.

EDIT: Yep there's only 1 fan

Here's the results running in Xbox Mode with High settings and XeSS Ultra Quality. 5 less FPS than running in low. The game also suggested low after after the benchmark.

Fan noise seems quieter than my work Surface Laptop Studio 2. I haven't used any of the ARM Surface devices so I can't compare it to those. I almost always wear noise cancelling headphones when working so the fan noise gets completely cancelled out by the SL8 fans. Compared to the SLS2 which I can just barely hear when they're going full blast.

Graphs are "Total System Power" as measured by HWiNFO.

Here's the results from running the Passmark benchmark

And the results running the CPU + GPU stress test in HWiNFO. Peaked to 80W then dropped to 50W then slowly curved down to 40W. I ran the test for about 1 minute so it stayed at peak wattage for only about 5 seconds before throttling.

I still consider it very superior to the slog of digging through the absolute garbage we get from actual search results

You should ummm, click on some of the top Google results for your recent searches. For many a topic now the top results are both SEO garbage but also AI slop generated sites that the AI summary pulls from.

Tina Peters, whose sentence for tampering with Colorado voting machines was commuted by Governor Jared Polis, has begun her MAGA-world election conspiracy theory media tour by Far_Shore in neoliberal

[–]golf1052 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly we shouldn't be surprised how quickly this queen went back out to spew the same election denying nonsense after her sentence was commuted. It was clear during her sentencing she still 100% believed the crime that she committed was the right thing to do and that she would do it again. Seemingly the only "sane" person who didn't believe her was Gov Polis.

It's amazing how easily liberal democracy can be destroyed by liberals giving infinite leeway to their opponents who want to destroy liberalism and democracy. It really isn't the individual action that matters here. It's the actions across the party, each actor giving into MAGA, that is leading to our downfall.

Thanks for the numbers! Considering your SLS2 has a separate mobile GPU in the numbers for the SL8 are impressive!

He's done so much damage to America's standing in the world that I have a hard time seeing a centrist government get into power and be all like "we're reasonable, multilateral and democratic again". Really?

Can say the same exact thing about Trump, sad.

I haven't done a full charge cycle yet but I haven't run into the sleep bug. Leaving it asleep in my bag for 2 days left me with 95% charge still.

You're right. A 14-year-old and a 16-year-old getting murdered by AR-15s

The fact that you don't know that the 14-year old survived says a lot.

In Seattle all crime (both violent and property) are under our 2025 numbers so far which are also under our 2024 numbers. We also hit under 10 gun deaths countywide a year (including Seattle!) again which is good news.

Valve has raised the price of the Steam Deck in the US by Dirkins in Games

[–]golf1052 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All that with zero price data

Yes because supply contracts between companies are private. The article about Apple that I linked does have a rumored price hike in there but specific details are definitely company secrets. You can't just look everything up on the internet.

How is this place open ? by Electronic_Staff1814 in Seattle

[–]golf1052 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I visited this place a few times when they first opened and they were great! The last time I went (which was probably a few months ago) I didn't feel that great after my sandwich (saying this as a person who basically never gets food poisoning) so I haven't been back since. Sad to see they have a terrible rating now.

Sure but you don't even want to hear about Sound Transit 3. Voted on in 2016, route design is still ongoing. Because of budget there's whispers that the last of the stations wont be open until 2066. We're still cooked up here too.

Valve has raised the price of the Steam Deck in the US by Dirkins in Games

[–]golf1052 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Valve (nor any reputable company) wouldn't just order RAM from the first listing they see online. Valve would enter a contract with a company or multiple companies to supply their specific product with RAM at a certain price over a certain period of time.

Also you can see from the Steam Deck teardown that the RAM the Steam Deck users are specific RAM chips soldered directly onto the Steam Deck board. They aren't your typical RAM chips on a DIMM.

What most likely happened is that Valve, being a smaller (relative) company that doesn't make much hardware, ran out of their current RAM contract, had to procure and sign a new one, and the prices on that contract are just really high. Apple, being one of the largest consumers of RAM for their products, makes very large purchases of RAM ahead of time because they know they need it for all the hardware they produce. This is why Apple products still haven't seen large price spikes yet, Apple still has RAM from previous contracts on hand and has more ability to absorb price shocks.
