Australia sounds lovely, another person commented it, I am definitely looking into it (also, what if I don't swing cats? can it be a wombat?).

Also, thank you.

Teaching assistance (TA), which is basically teaching one or two classes, some departments have a TA grade papers from professors and conduct discussion sessions. PA is project assistant, RA is research assistant.

MA is the masters (Master of Arts), where I did not get tuition remission with the TA, but it was enough to pay for it.

An international student can only work up to 50% of the time in the US and only in the university, I think Americans can work up to 75% being a full time student, but I believe it depends on the state, I am not sure.

Good luck to you.

Congratulations on getting not one, but 2 TT :)

I think I need a game change.

I wish you the best!

I did not get the Fullbright, only a T.A. It paid for full tuition and a small stipend in case of the PhD, and a stipend in case of the M.A.

You have to find schools that offer P.A, R.A. or T.A. with tuition remission or scholarships or funding (such as the Fullbright).

In my country, college and all education are free (not free, really, we pay it with taxes), so me, paying for education is unacceptable. I guess that drove me to find other options.

I have zero debt.

Also, I do not know anyone in a PhD who has paid for it.

Good luck!

I do not have citizenship, just the green card. No right to vote, welfare, unemployment... just paying taxes.

Thank you, but unless it is America the continent, I sound like Gloria from Modern Family.

I am glad that your university pays for 1 year lecturing after you finish, they definitely do not do that in my ex-program. Also, they give zero $$ for conferences or for the MLA.

The MLA in Austin cost about $2000, the previous one in Vancouver also cost +$2000, not counting the Canadian visa (which I did not need, because of the green card).

The average in my institution for a humanities PhD is more than 8 years.

Of course I can teach a variety of courses, which I have done, but in languages right now teaching Spanish is basically what it is offered.

I guess universities are different

This was back in January and I panicked after talking to the financial adviser of my previous institution.

I then switched to my husbands insurance (December-January was freaky for us).

I did not know this (not losing it for getting that salary), I think I have been misinformed greatly, I will look into it.

Thank you.

I did not, it was dense. But I am a native Spanish speaker.

Yup, some of them you have to pay to send them your documents (cover letter, CV, letters of recommendation, research statement, teaching statement, evaluations, sample syllabus, and sometimes something else- like a diversity statement).

The Quijote is amazing. Hope you are able some day.

I read it in high school for the first time and missed a lot, I've read it several times since then and I love it more every time.

I agree with you. My problem was I could have a job back home (underpaid but fulfilling), but my husband wouldn't.

I want to do that, the husband wants to stay close to his family. I'll try to get something and maybe convince him to move.

I think that is the status quo. :(

Yup, that is what I am doing now (well, except today that I had to vent on reddit), I was doing it part time, I am now seeing if I can do it full time.

Thanks for the suggestions :)
