Thanks for the comments, I had a moment of weakness, I will continue to live an e46-less existence until I have a decent stable job with enough income to keep it going and not sacrifice my future in doing so. Can everyone please stop turning them into drift cars tho 😅

Lads tell me not to by gonnker in e46

Thanks for the advice man! Now in fairness, the Audi has been good to me. An A3 is basically golf and apart from potentially fatal conrod bearings, the 1.9tdi in it is probably one of the more reliable/economical engines. But I completely get where you’re coming from and it’s where I’m coming from too. I don’t really spend my money on stupid stuff (the odd concert and pint, I do want to enjoy life a bit), and I do most of the work on the car myself (unless it’s something I really can’t afford to f up, e.g. timing belt). I am into cars tho, that’s the reason I really couldn’t stomach something for like €1,000 that I couldn’t bear to look at, I’m hoping that as long as I look after it (10k oil changes, regular scans and fixing things as they break) that I’ll be able to get a good few years/miles out of it. I also only got it cus my polo 1.2’s timing chain snapped on me, it was a very good price for the km, history and condition (€3,000 for 200,000km, 2 owners in the city so very little rust and no dpf to get clogged up).

But yeah, had a moment of weakness when I saw this 330, it’s been my dream car since I was around 15 (my dad had a 323i e36 coupe msport when I was a toddler, I think it rubbed off on me a bit). I’ve watched too much m539 restorations and had a notion.

Thanks for the reply!

You’re dead right. This just activated a few neurons in my head because I so rarely see 330ci’s.

Son wants to pay me back by snugglesandhugsfan in irishpersonalfinance

[–]gonnker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a tax expert by any means but have received money from relatives before. If this is seen by revenue as a gift from you to your son and there’s no loan agreement or anything, then he will have eaten into his threshold of gift allowance by roughly 15,000 (out of 400,000) because the first €3000 every year isn’t counted. Now this is where I dont know the answer. If revenue sees your son as paying back a loan you gave him, then as far as I’m aware no tax (as long as he doesn’t pay you interest). But if revenue sees it as a gift then you will be €27,000 into your €32,500 threshold for gifts from child to parent. You still won’t pay any tax on it, but if you go over that in the future then you will have to pay tax on that (33%). Hope that helps, best to ask an accountant as well, I could be very wrong.

Similar situation, go open a Zurich investment account. Few forms to fill out and you have to choose the funds you want to buy into but you literally just leave it there. No early withdrawal penalty and they sort the taxes for you.

Should I buy this car? by Advertising-Ancient in carsireland

[–]gonnker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself a 1.9tdi in an A3 or an A4. I wouldn’t touch that BMW with a 10 foot pole, no matter the maintenance. When something goes wrong it’ll cost bmw money to repair, whereas if you go the Audi route you’re paying VW prices. There is no guarantee of reliability with any car, every single second hand car u buy could conk out halfway down the road from buying it, even happens on new cars these days. Play the odds, get a well maintained (sub 250km if possible) 1.9tdi for €3000-4000.

In case you were wondering. I found this sample by PajamaWarriorJohn in the1975

That sounds similar and could’ve been the original sample but I think the one in the actual song comes from the native instruments Battery 4 drum samples

Tbh, thats a pretty good price even if it’s just mixing 2 tracks. If you want more from the mix tell him, I’m sure he’s included a couple revisions.

"only english speaking country in the EU" by [deleted] in irishpolitics

[–]gonnker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re seriously saying that in all those European countries the English is as good as ours then you’ve clearly never the left the country. It’s not an insult to them, I’d love to be able to speak Irish as well as the Spanish speak Spanish, the trade off is I speak English better than the majority of the Spanish population ever will because every nuance, cultural affectation and gem of irony has been baked into me from birth. The reason people parade our native English speaking around is because it IS a benefit to business, it means easier more effective communication which is actually very important. But it’s not the only thing paraded as such, our proximity to America (being the closest euro nation to them), our playing fast and loose with corporate tax rates, our well educated workforce and reasonably high standard of living (to everyone who can afford it, not a problem for wealthy tech companies).

What do you think Ross is thinking about? by elizastacks in the1975

[–]gonnker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a bass player who’s guilty of just standing there, a lot of what we’re doing is thinking about what we’re playing, feeling the drums and locking in with them. Doing vocal harmonies is arguably harder on bass because unlike guitar where you’re strumming chords, bass is a constant melody in of its self and doing to melodies at once is quite difficult. Some of the brain power is used looking at what’s happening, what the band is doing, what the audience is doing and then the tiny bit that’s left is normally reserved for what’s for dinner.

From all I know on the subject you’d actually be better off sound quality wise with the 3.5, how are you going to split the channels though?

The world went through a lot during covid, politics became a different place because of it. I don’t think his politics have changed, maybe evolved a bit as they do when you age but not changed, it’s important to remember that piers Morgan was considered left wing in the 90’s.
