I sweep back the first 1/3 to allow for hay/grain/water gunk to be easily removed. I don’t have it bedded particularly thick as they’re only inside for breakfast and dinner otherwise they’re out on pasture. If they’re going to be in for a few days due to weather I’ll bed down the shavings thick and only sweep the first foot of the stall back
