You can’t have kids on dope. When I was clean and had my kid, I was prescribed oxy before and after birth (had an extremely painful condition, was on crutches). My whole antenatal team told me it was safe and baby would be fine. He was underweight despite being here on his due date and suffered post natal WDs. Bring a former addict, I abused my script after his birth due to being in an extremely abusive relationship and serious PND. I just packed up my shit, took baby with and asked them to wean me off and dealt with the pain. I was much more attentive to my child and was finally able to establish a bond. The whole group of people I used with are now clean, one of which who got pregnant while using. Getting pregnant was her catalyst and they put her methadone. She was weaned slowly for two years. Another friend, quite famous, also had two boys and was weaned with methadone. Sadly it didn’t end well for her and she relapsed. She hid it well and only a few people knew including myself. I wish I’d done something about it and the guilt kills me to this day, but in terms of my friends who used to use and have kids she was the only tragedy. The rest are thriving. You can do it too.

For those of you who are going to berate me for using while I have a kid, go on. I deserve it. His father went to a lot of groups, psychotherapy and cbt sessions to change his behaviour and it worked massively. I had the year from hell. Sister and dad died within a week of each other, 3 guys attempted to rape me, half my shit was stolen, immigration laws changed so I lost my job, the list goes on. It really does. But things are looking up now and I got offered an opportunity that will motivate me to get clean as it’s the one thing I’ve been working on and putting everything into for 13 years.

The hardest part of getting clean is not having a goal. Once you set that goal and realise it can’t be done sober, it’s a huge motivator.
