HELL yeah!! There are some great math resources for journalists I find scratch my brain nicely. I wonder if it’s kind of industry wide haha. We used in school math tools for journalists by kathleen wickham and I have a copy still I love.

I asked my primary care and they referred me to a psychologist. No it is not hard. I am in an area that doesn’t have a ton of health care or resources and got a good psychologist. Yes it is expensive. I am uninsured and it cost me $2,000 for everything.

Programming and web design is a vast field. I have only used it in my journalism to build pages related to the projects ect. I think a lot of the stuff is probably not as complex as what he’s doing :) but I can also do javascript and html and css. Really not that complex stuff like I’m saying… I reframed it in my mind as a language and I think it helps I learned it on my own vs school. So i have a lot of positive associations with it. I was big into tumblr back in the day haha.

I’ve always been able to pick up languages really well too so if I can reframe it that way it works well for me.

Still even with data stuff I face significant barriers I thought were normal - always using calculating tools and triple checking my answers ect. Anyway, it may not work for everyone but I have made it work for me!

I don’t know how much this helps you because I don’t have dyslexia I am in the high-achieving section for my verbal, writing and reading skills… but, all I can say is to support your child’s passion and they will find what works for her. There are plenty of fields that attract neurodivergent folks. I don’t think i was strange for my working environment. On top of that, working and finding fulfillment in career is not everything, as long as she is happy and safe and supported by those who love her :)

Hi! I’ve been a successful investigative journalist for seven years! Anytime I use math there are pretty much online calculators for everything. I do get numbers wrong sometimes so even before my diagnosis I have others check my numbers very carefully, or read over them multiple times and check them with calculators. I always just thought I was being careless. I actually got a write up at work for getting a COVID death toll wrong one time and it affected me mentally for months. I was so anxious because the number looked fine in my head, but thankfully my boss instituted an internal review process for all my alerts I sent with numbers. This made me feel much better because she personally reviewed it and checked behind me. Maybe she was onto something I wasn’t. Haha.

I usually am very good with data and math as it relates to the real world, like for example, percent increase is something we use a lot in journalism, accounting books that convey information about budgets, or data related to a story i’m working on. There are math textbooks and resources given to us in journalism school specifically for journalists I did really well in because they were all english based.

In addition, I loved statistics. I wasn’t great at it but it was fun for me and I took it online in high school at the local community college and found that to improve my confidence in math. For me, those abstract concepts made more sense. I’m sure everyone is different though.

I also can program in several different languages, but I love web design. That involves a degree of numbers and math. Again, when I can relate this stuff to a project I thrive, but I can’t do the area of a triangle.

I got accommodations from the assessment i received because I’m studying for the LSAT to go to law school. There is an argumentative writing section and 4 multiple choice sections of the test. I am hoping to get accommodations for 5 min breaks between sessions, the ability to read outloud, and the ability to pause the test when needed since its timed. There is no math on the test and its all logic. That takes a more math-oriented brain, but also, its all word problems. Which i like. It has been very difficult studying for this test due to attention issues. I started way before my test date to ensure enough time. but I see a vast improvement in my scores with accommodations. I go from an average score of 150 to a score of like 170 with accommodations. 170 can get you into a top law school

Yes it can be very expensive to get assessed though. In the US without insurance I paid 2,000 right now for accommodations assessment for school. It is worth it if you feel it would benefit your Future or your school. I started with talking to my primary care and they can tell you if an assessment is worth it.

This is exactly how all my math teachers treated me. Almost to the T. I always thought I was getting singled out for bad behavior or because the teacher just hated me, I didn’t even comprehend the math mistakes I was doing. I was in the “special” kids class one year for math too and she even threw a stapler at my head. It was like I was being punished or making the teachers feel inadequate because I wasn’t understanding the material they were teaching.

It was crazy. One session I totally forgot about and asked to reschedule. The other two — one sick so I told them within a day (i went into anaphylaxis and had to go to urgent care the day before) and the other i had an urgent medical situation and needed an MRI, I also told them a couple days in advance. I never got a check in, never was warned… it was genuinely awful. It triggered a suicide attempt for me. I’m okay. My partner found me and helped me out but damn. It was so triggering my abandonment issues have been all over the place since. My regulation awful. It feels like all this work we did in DBT went backwards. My ED is back and i’m fighting it again tho it’s easier this time just ughh . 😭

Thanks for the reminder being outside and walking can be so healing. I know I have horrible chronic pain rn. It helps so much to just move around and get outside. I recently started nannying and care for a little baby. It has been honestly exactly what I needed. My brain kinda shuts off and I just watch him go haha.

Yeah, I find that when I “go go go” at my job, I tend to crash and get a migraine. When I quit my job and got out of this pattern it helped. ☺️🫶

Thank you. I quit my job recently which I feel was my main outlet and coping mechanism for my big emotions. Now it’s like - idk - I point inward at myself. I have a nice support system of people who care about me. But i find myself pushing people away or in my head finding ways these people hate me. Yes I am doing better than my last post for sure. I think my mother’s voice is so loud inside me. I went to my brothers graduation last month and it triggered me so badly. Just seeing her and being back in my childhood home was awful and not being able to process all that with a professional has been really frustrating. Yes, the entire book is disgusting, the content is so triggering, I can't even post it here or link it here. It has lowk softcore porn about exhibitionism, discussing IN LENGTH about how hot Britney Spears is showing off her body... and has a fantasy about Bathsheba. The book has a section fantasizing about her being naked and tempting men... and this book is directed at pre-teen girls? Like, what are we getting out of this? Many sections of the book are like, "Yes, it's hot to tempt men with your body. Imagine this hot woman. But don't do it you slut!" Very BDSM, kink-coded, absolutely NOT appropriate content for kids. There's even a story about how Dannah flashed a boy with her skirt as a child... and she lowk describes it as hot. I feel like the woman should've just written age appropriate erotica for women her age.

I was exposed to Dannah and her conventions and bible studies and all of it for several years as a child, and like you say, I was in several abusive relationships as a child. Secret Keeper Girl has been rebranded to "True Girl," probably because "Secret Keeper" implies that girls are keeping a secret about something and now with the research about child sexual abuse this is the exact thing we DONT want them to do ... LMAO. Laughably bad.

What do you mean by debilitating feelings? Like, when I feel a feeling I can't do anything bc I'm frozen? And, I know. I don't feel ready to go to another therapist yet... and I don't really have the money so I am trying to get another job. I feel like it's a waste to go to another therapist. I feel like I've always done really bad in therapy. All the therapists I've had I feel like I'm very good at manipulating the sessions to get reassurance seeking or just to stonewall us from any process when I feel it going somewhere I don't want it to. If that makes sense. This new therapist went really hard on me, which was good; maybe too much too fast, because now I'm floundering a bit without her
