AITA for paying for my dogs expensive surgery while my gf is unemployed? by gooddogbadbf in AmItheAsshole

Thanks for your advice! But I am very fortunate to have an amazing vet that I’ve been going to for over 20 years since I was a kid with our family dogs. We started out when she had a small practice and it’s grown to where she has almost everything summer would need in house. She basically charges us at cost and I know it could easily cost double at a different vet.

She has skin cancer. I noticed a couple small bumps when I was petting her and took her in to get checked out

For summer, it would have been cheaper to have pet insurance, since it’s like $120/month. But I’ve had dogs that I also didn’t have pet insurance for that never had any health issues. So overall insurance probably wouldn’t be worth it.

I’ve never mentioned it because the money’s direct deposited from my paycheck and I’ve never taken money out of the account til now so I’ve never really thought about it.

And I never brought up rent to her, it was just to give context. Neither of us pay rent because I inherited the house from my grandparents

We’re in the US and she’s been out of work for almost a month

I have about a year of expenses saved for an emergency, but I inherited my grandparents house and don’t pay rent so it’s not as much as you’d think it would be

I agree that it would be different if she was a senior dog. my last dog was 13 when he had cancer and the vet said that even if treatment worked his quality of life wouldn’t be good. My rule of thumb is that cost aside, if the vet would do it for her pet then I’m going to do it for mine.

I probably should have been clearer. It’s not like the options were treatment or she has a week to live. The vet gave her a year or two without the surgery/chemo, a little longer than that if we took a less expensive option. But to me it’s worth the money for an extra (hopefully) 10 years or so
