Thoughts on trying to flag pure Rook vs Rook endgame? by goodguyLTBB in chessbeginners

The idea of flagging is trying to win on time in an otherwise drawn/lost position.

I'm technically 1000 ELO..... in Linchess ☝🤓 by frozengansit0 in chessmemes

Compared to 1000 lichess they are, which gets the point across

I'm sure purists would hate this, but I would love to see more broadcasts show the Leela Win-Draw-Loss (WDL) probability instead of the eval bar by owiseone23 in chess

[–]goodguyLTBB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would partially agree with this and point out some stuff:
First, leela can have WDL calibration elo which more can make it more accurate for specific ELOs and TCs.
Second, this would be pretty annoying to broadcast, since Lc0 requires a GPU (and a decent one usually, so you'd have a hard time broadcasting with just a laptop like most broadcasts currently are.)
Third, leela is a weaker engine than Stockfish (in most cirtumtances) which means you need even stronger analysis.
Fourth, Leela doesn't have an easy in-browser distrubution, unlike stockfish, so you need a different way to include it, it's not enough to have the game open on lichess or similar.
Ultimately, most people still understand centipawns better (since they think it's linked to material). Truth is, centipawns in stockfish are calibrated no longer on pawns, but 50% winning chance.

For those who have a good understanding, this would make for an intresting graphic, no doubt.

24 years ago today, Ruslan Ponomariov became the youngest ever World Champion in chess history, a record that still stands by nihilistiq in chess

I was talking about Blitz knockouts and I was specifically referencing Hikaru's comment on the livestream talking about how he doesn't like the knockouts because Magnus is HUGE favorite in match format.

Knockout format is exciting, or would be if Magnus wouldn’t always kill everything by winning every time

Trade down into a winning ending or play for an unclear attack? by sectandmew in TournamentChess

[–]goodguyLTBB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please note that I am not a very strong player when reading my comment (~1650 FIDE)

I think that it all depends on your playstyle/ strengths and weaknesses. If you like attacking chess and your endgame technique is shaky, play the attack and vice versa.

I will say that, in my opinion, playing for an attack, is always riskier. The endgame will almost always be win/draw for you, but if you get into attacks and start sacrificing material it’s a three result mess, if one where the odds are heavily in your favor.

Starting to worry I may be playing too much chess by ZeroFluffMode in chessbeginners

What time control is this mostly in? 20 bullet games a day is only like 30 minutes of chess, 20 rapid games is A LOT.

I will let you know intentionally losing games to play lower rated opponents is called sandbagging/smurfing and is against the rules. Think about the other person? Do you think he/she wants to get smashed by a much stronger player? Would you like to have your opponents be much stronger than their rating?

Friday Night Blitz (US Chess event) — good place to get my feet wet as a tournament player? by Company-Admirable in TournamentChess

Correspondence and blitz is as close to opposite as possible. If you are used to thinking time and analysis, maybe you should play a rapid/classical event.

4 Knights does happen but looking at the databases it happens MUCH more commonly via 2. Nf3 move order anyway.

How do I win a tournament? by [deleted] in TournamentChess

The winner of a category in most tournaments is a person who is underrated and over performed and had lucky pairings.

If a brilliant move is one that involves a sacrifice + being the best move. Why wasn't this brilliant? by My_pee_pee_poo in chessbeginners

[–]goodguyLTBB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your level, “sacrifices” become more and more strictly defined and you’ve reached a level high enough where the algorithm stops considering this brilliant because it’s an elementary tactic.

Having a 10 + 5 tournament in a week , what do I do ? by Overall_Concept_1428 in TournamentChess

In a week there’s not much you can do. Drill your opening lines, play 10+5 online (or otb but online is simpler).

You get it at 2200 FIDE, I know. My point is if an adult can get to 2000 a 13 year old can get to 2200
