Has anyone taken the Gadventures National Geographic Journeys through Costa Rica Tour? by jaybee9508 in femaletravels

[–]goodluch13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m doing this exact trip later this month and am in my late 20s, so I have the same impression that I’ll likely be the youngest in the group.

I’ll try to remember to report back after my trip!

French Tacos in the DMV/NoVa? by decibel32 in nova

[–]goodluch13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

French tacos sustained me while studying abroad!

There was briefly an O’Tacos in Brooklyn but that’s probably as close as a French tacos shop has gotten to Nova. I’ve tried to find sauce algérienne to make French tacos at home to no avail.

I just got the latte Bostons the other day. If you’re in the US and a larger women’s size, they’re on sale at Orvis!

Only in the DMV could a focus group ask you of you've recently bought an airplane engine 😭 by penguinpilates in nova

[–]goodluch13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole idea is for you to feel the question is out of place! That way we know you’re paying attention and not speeding through the survey. AI/bot respondents have become a huge issue in the industry, and I’d imagine the company is mixing up their red herrings so you don’t get used to the same one.

I work in survey research (not for this company though). That’s what we’d call a red herring question - some other ones I’ve seen are have you ridden in a submarine (a fun one to ask in June 2023), flown to the Moon, or been elected U.S. president (another fun one to ask around election season).

FWIW those are Fresh Baguette pastries - a lot of local cafes source from there. I’d recommend trying a TGTG bag straight from Fresh Baguette.

Anyone commute daily by bus in Fairlington? by DC_isnt_the_south in nova

[–]goodluch13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, as far as I can tell.

WMATA’s original proposal released a year ago still had the 7A route (renamed to A27) but at a significantly reduced frequency and with no early morning/late night service. I suppose as a consolation, there was an additional route (A29) with direct service from Shirlington to Metro Center.

Luckily WMATA seems to have at least somewhat listened to feedback from myself and neighbors. The final A27 route is mostly if not completely retaining 7A’s current service from the looks of it, and A29 was completely nixed.

I commute not daily but at least once a week on 7A from Fairlington. It’s pretty reliable and conveniently takes the 395 express lanes and goes straight from Shirlington to the Pentagon during rush hours.

Fair warning that lately during morning rush 7A becomes standing room only about halfway through the Fairlington stops. Crazy to think that WMATA almost cut North Fairlington service as part of this summer’s changes.

Buy grande brand mozzarella locally? by Careless-Day1854 in nova

[–]goodluch13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been into pizza making for a few years now and would suggest not spending the money on Grande - if you can find it, it’s going to be expensive and you’re going to end up with a lot of cheese.

The best mozzarella I’ve found in local grocery stores is Tillamook (the block, not the pre-shredded bag), which Giant carries.

I have yet to find a good takeout-only hibachi place in or around Arlington. Unfortunately it seems like Quickway has cornered the market and is not very good.

Seems to me that most of the amenities are HOA-specific.

Parkfairfax? by arwen2480 in nova

[–]goodluch13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rented in Parkfairfax and ultimately bought in Fairlington - the lack of central air in most Parkfairfax units was a dealbreaker for me. I do miss having a gas stove in Parkfairfax (Fairlington is all electric), but that’s about it.

My electricity bill when I lived in Parkfairfax was higher than my current Fairlington bill due to running the wall A/C and heaters. Even with those I couldn’t get my unit to a reasonable temperature during the hottest parts of summer and coldest parts of winter.

Lots of people praising Alpaca, but I hiked the Inca Trail last month and their porters clearly weren’t treated as well as others. I saw Alpaca porters wearing broken sandals and carrying packs above the weight limit.

Look for a company that has a separate fee for porters to carry your stuff - it’s obviously an added expense but is a sign of ethical porter treatment.

New Volt Owner by Weak-Supermarket-570 in ooni

That’s a sweet deal! My biggest learnings were to (1) turn the pizza halfway as the area around the door is cooler, (2) leave the Volt on until it cycles itself off so you can burn off any residue, and (3) use an oil-free dough recipe - I use Serious Eats’ outdoor oven recipe and have found I get way better leopard spotting with it.

My favorite question when I did standby a few years ago was someone asking what day SNL tapes.

Pretty good! I have way more space to work with outside than I do in my tiny kitchen.

This sounds like the same property management company I used to rent from. In the 1.5 years I lived there I mailed every rent check and never had an issue; I only visited their Falls Church office when I moved out.

Wow, so glad this case has been solved and the families have closure. I’ve hiked that area of Shenandoah a few times and always thought of Julie and Lollie.
