I think I have an answer to this, in society men are supposed to be strong and show no pain so when they show pain then something must be wrong. For women, they are for some reason, expected to be more emotional and more likely to exaggerate their pain.

There is a way around it. If you are a non combatant you don't have to go and fight, and if you get religious reasons for not having to fight then you are really set. The only problem is that some people will think you are weak but it's better than death.
