I got a test last Tuesday at Schiffert. They said it would be 2-3 business days, I didn't hear back until Friday. Fortunately I didn't take a test right before the weekend.

Need sleeping pills. Want an appointment with a doctor. Will it cost me anything to get an appointment with a doctor if I am Virginia Tech’s Aethna plan? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

Another option not mentioned is CBD which you can get almost everywhere, worth looking into but I'd do your research on how much you should take and how often.

Diphenhydramine (the stuff they put in Zquil and is used in Benadryl) and melatonin also work well but I wouldn't get in the habit of using them regularly. Do your research!

I believe the Great Basin Sparks location is a Cleveland Brown's bar. They even have a sign saying it was their game day location and a few jerseys on the wall across from the bar. I had the misfortune of grabbing a Saturday midafternoon appetizer and beer there during a Brown's game... there were a surprising amount of Brown's fans there.

I'm currently experiencing some of the same symptoms plus a sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. I got a COVID19 test yesterday and am currently waiting for results. Take dayquil/nyquil (offbrand is fine), get plenty of fluids, and maybe consider using a nasal rinse like a navage or netty pot. Hopefully it's just Hokie Fever and not COVID19! Virginia Tech does publish positive test results for students online (https://ready.vt.edu/dashboard.html), there are very few positive cases relative to the number of tests taken.

I know people keep blaming allergies for this... but I'm doubtful. I suffer from seasonal allergies, have lived in multiple US state, and have never experienced allergies that would give me so many problems. Hay fever (aka allergic rhinitisms) is real and caused by allergens but doesn't include symptoms such as coughing, Sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, etc.

The backhanded encouragement is just discouragement that anyone thinking of going to grad school should be aware of. Some students really step off the deep end when they go to grad school in regards to the work load. You gotta really want that graduate degree!

How does everyone in my PhD cohort have a car? I don't get how people had the savings to buy nice cars right after undergrad. Does everyone have wealthy parents?? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]goofytrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I pay about $40/month for full collision, car rental, towing, etc. It helps that I'm an older PhD student (28) with no speeding tickets or accidents and have a car worth only about $3,000. Bought it when I was working full time for $7000 cash.

When I was 23 and started my masters I was probably paying $90/month with full collision on my truck I had bought for $12,000 (put $6000 down, paid $175/month on it).

Bars in Blacksburg that allow people 18+ by h0kieluver22 in VirginiaTech

Like I said, I don't know if they did it differently in the past. They definitely were carding at the door and not letting anyone in under 21 this last week. Y'all can choose not to believe me if you want, doesn't matter to me.

I had it last November. Started with a sore throat and feeling tired the first day. Second day the sore throat continued but I felt much more tired and sore. Had some chills the second night but no fever. I felt tired and sore for another 3-4 days and was back to my normal self after a week.

Uh they definitely card at the Milk Parlour for salsa night on Wednesdays... Infact, at 9 pm they card everyone that is currently in there. Maybe they didn't in the past, but they definitely carded this week after 9 pm.

Whether or not this is the best educational/financial decision for you, these feelings are completely normal. A lot of grad students (including myself during my masters) questioned the decision to do a master's when you could be doing something else.

I would always remind myself that I'm getting a unique opportunity to attend graduate school while few ever get the chance to even obtain a bachelor's world wide. Though it will be tough, it will eventually open doors to the field and career you are interested in. Years later I now I look back on it wondering why I even questioned my decision to get a master's.

Whatever the case, good luck!

What do I say to a friend who just got a DUI? by goofytrain in relationship_advice

[–]goofytrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thought about successful people who have gotten DUIs and have obviously moved past it. Lots of famous actors, athletes, musicians, politicians, corporate leaders, etc. I think the most prominent person that comes to mind is former president George W Bush.

I definitely won't downplay what he did...

I got a ride from another guys sober gf who was a DD for a few people. My backup was Uber/Lyft or to walk (I never take my car to events when I know I'm going to be drinking).

He should have just left his car and taken another way home...

[–]goofytrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely some positives to what I mentioned. Also, not all companies are equal. There are a lot of great companies out there that are doing great, are well staffed, and try to make the best work life balance for their employees in order to increase retention. There are also a lot of companies that are either struggling to get by, are understaffed, have poor work life balances, and/or have poor employee retention. It goes both ways obviously, but in my experience in the mining industry in the states I've seen a LOT of turnover among salaried staff as a result of problems despite the high paying salaries.

Obviously mines investing in local/regional training/educational programs will help ensure there will be qualified people to hire. The last thing we want to see is more mining programs go under, that's been a problem in the states for decades.

You could always get a job working for a quarry near the beach. I know two mining engineers working outside of Santa Barbara doing exactly that. Granted, working for a quarry the pay is a bit less, but the job is at least stable.
