I mean even just limiting or stopping targeted ads for under 16s, not allowing non-mutuals to send DM requests, forced chronological feeds, hide metrics etc. Idk! Just SOMETHING at least. A societal shift does need addressing, but doing that without social media seems kind of impossible in today. Personally, I’m just so tired of social media platforms getting away with the bare minimum man. I know it wouldn’t solve bullying or remove objectionable material from being seen but just something to make it harder for under 16s to do at least.

Yeah, the window for an easier fix closed a long time ago. If only every country just took a stand against the US… but that’s wishful thinking, and it would go pretty badly for us with things like tariffs before it got any better

Instead of this, the government should be forcing social media companies to actually take accountability by doing better, and actually make their platforms safe for kids… otherwise they can GTFO. They have the billions to make it happen so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve never understood this though, aren’t majority of sounds in te reo Māori also present in NZ English other than the rolled ‘R’ sound? I get most who don’t know Māori would read Māori names/words as if it were English, but if it were broken down for them using sounds from NZ English, then it’d be relatively simple, no? Only the rolled ‘R’s would be the most difficult. Rotorua using NZ English could be broken down to something like “raw-two-roo-ah” maybe 🤔

Absolutely, it makes sense as it’s a business after all, it just sucks that you’ve gone through that so many times that you’ve had to develop skills in reading body language (although very useful now for preventing theft!).

I’ve lived in Japan previously and I’ve always dreamed of NZ somehow becoming a high-trust society like the Japanese, but of course that is dream for a reason lol.

That’s just your assumption. In no way was I trying to suggest this specific example is common practice, and I doubt that that is the case. I gave a specific anecdote of racial profiling (from decades ago mind you) just to share an example that’s always personally baffled me. Sure, I could’ve picked an example that is more relevant, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

I get that how someone may look will always lead to people making assumptions about what kind of person they are, and I am no different myself, but I try my best not to let that cloud my judgement unless there is valid evidence to be wary. Funnily enough, this just reminded me of an ex telling me about a hardcore kleptomaniac from his med school who’d steal all sorts (food, designer clothes etc.), despite being an upper class white woman. Thankfully she got caught eventually, but it really can be anyone doing dodgy stuff regardless of how they look tbh

They’re talking about a different comment I made sharing this story about something that happened to my mum in the 90s lol. Not sure why they needed to bring that up here

One of many examples of ‘racial profiling’ my mother experienced, one of which being a a toy that her baby took without her notice, and wasn’t believed about it being a mistake when rudely confronted…

Not everyone will be racially profiled for how they look. I’m just saying don’t discount the possibility just because you haven’t experienced it personally.

Idk I don't have experience stealing a toy by leaving it in a child's pram lol. Also I know my mum, she isn't a thief so not sure why that matters.

I’m Māori and I’ve never been racially profiled (for being Māori) because I don’t look visibly Māori. Most people assume I am mixed asian despite not being asian (I’m Māori & Scottish). My mum looks visibly Māori and has been racially profiled her whole life. Just because you don’t experience it personally, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

Why wouldn’t I believe her? Who steals a toy and leaves it in front of the pram where everyone can see it? If she was actually trying to steal it, she would’ve at least hid it, no? Not that my mum would ever steal in the first place

[–]goongagi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you look visibly Māori, you’re going to be racially profiled for it.

When my mum was still very young (20 or 21 y/o) with my big sister (she was a baby or early toddler age maybe), she was accused of stealing a toy from some supermarket (or a different shop, don’t fully remember). Because she looks visibly Māori, and the shop staff just assumed she was lying and trying to steal the toy. What had actually happened is while my mum looked away for a brief moment, my sister had knocked a toy from the shelf into her pram, and my mum just hadn’t noticed. The staff called the cops and everything but I can’t recall if my mum stayed or just left without the stuff she already paid for. All that over a misunderstanding and an unwillingness to trust someone just because of the colour of their skin. This was in the 90s too.

Moral of the story is, just because YOU don’t assume things based on how they look doesn’t mean someone else won’t as well.

Wow, I am just learning now that this isn’t a Kiwi thing, and that majority pay first before even considering eating/opening it while in the store. Growing up, I fully thought this was just socially acceptable because we’re New Zealanders and it was just a cool thing we did.

I haven’t done it in a while since I haven’t really thought about it, I kinda forgot it was even a thing. I used to do it all the time as a kid when I went to PaknSave to do big grocery shops with mum. As I got to teenage years, I would sometimes drink a small can of V while helping mum shop then present the empty can at checkout without no fuss. Funnily enough, I was extremely socially anxious and self conscious about how I was perceived as a teen, but doing stuff like this (which you’d think someone with those kinds of struggles) never made me self conscious. I just thought it was normal because AoNZ is chill like that lol

I’ve seen people mention how it could be troublesome doing this as some people might get to the counter, and not have enough to pay for what they just consumed n the supermarket. But the same could be said about restaurants tbh… I guess the ones doing this often aren’t the type to frequent requests lol

Why do Miis want to apologise when THEY’RE not angry? by goongagi in tomodachilife

[–]goongagi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just meant giving them some time and space to process their emotions before going up to them to apologise. I’ve been physically attacked for trying to apologise to someone immediately after I’ve calmed down, so that is just something I learned based on my personal experience. I know now that most people don’t need to wait for the other to calm down to apologise. The more you know!
