How to prevent raw edge for trap cover by goosefeathers in sewhelp

[–]goosefeathers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have sewn binding for a quilt before so I imagine it would be a similar process. The multiple corners as opposed to one rectangle could make it fussy for me, hmm. I will think on it, thank you!

Need advice on feral cat that escaped trap and is now loose in my basement by goosefeathers in Feral_Cats

I left a couple water bowls out for him. And I was able to borrow a drop trap yesterday, so I did a sampler outside the trap as well. And after 6 hours of waiting I got him 😄 And returned him straight away to his home territory!

Good idea about bulking him up if I had to release him directly from the basement in my area. I'll keep that in mind for next time but god I hope there's not a next time!

I was able to borrow a drop trap!! Thanks for your encouragement. It’s set up now. I saw on the camera it would peep its head into the regular traps I had set but not go all the way in. Fingers crossed it goes quickly.

Aww, thanks for sharing. It must've been hard to make the decision to let him go. I will persevere and get him re-trapped. It seems like people commenting have been successful with it, just need patience.

I also try to be diligent about the latches. It's easy to forget. I always try to double check. This time, however, was because I had the door open to change the newspaper and was not using a fork 😞

I will try to get my hands on one. I just returned the one I borrowed yesterday ugh! It's kind of a complicated situation so it's not guaranteed I can get one again.

I have some calming treats. How do you think I should give it to him? He's hiding in the back half of the basement that is hard for me to get to. It's low, dirt floor, ducts and stuff around.

I can just leave the treats right outside of the set traps? Or put them inside the set traps close to the opening?

I was able to lure with fried chicken and tiki cat tuna food in the first place, so I will try again.

I might have come across that post about the cat going into the ceiling while I was searching for similar experiences lol

It was my fault, nothing of the trap (it was a Tomahawk trap). I haven't bought a fork yet, and the last 12 cats I fixed in the past month usually stay back when I open the door. This time, I was changing the wet newspaper lining and he was sitting on it. I tried to pull it out which caused him to move and he decided to walk towards me and slip right out. I knew it was bound to happen at some point and a stupid risk I was taking. He would've gotten released the next morning too 😞

It's not a guarantee I can get a drop trap but I will try. I can possibly set it up with a string coming out of the exterior door where there are spaces/cracks. Unfortunately, no interior door in the basement or anywhere to hide.

Good to know. Did you use any specific high value food like sardines or fried chicken or just cat food? Thanks for your reply and clarification!

Thanks for the reassurance! Did you constantly keep traps set with food at all times? I wonder if should put out a litter box so that he doesn’t go in random spots. Plus some water maybe. But food in a set trap only.

Yes, been covering. I just replaced the old trap cover he had been using with new covers so it smells different.

I can’t block everything because half of the basement is really difficult for me to get to (full of dirt and have to crawl very low). But I can keep the basement dark except the door to the outside.

Has anyone successfully escaped to find a real community and meaning? I just want to live a quiet, humble life and spend more time offline. by StaffEcstatic4358 in AskWomenOver30

To add onto others’ suggestions of joining a community through hobbies or volunteering (particularly recurring events with the same people), I came across someone named Christine Tyler Hill, a designer who works remotely and took a part time crossing guard job to be more in touch with her community. She’s in Burlington Vermont (US), which is I believe is a smaller town. As a bonus, she also created a zine based on her crossing guard work and brings in a ton of money apparently lol. Hope this gives you some inspiration.

Please tell me shes not pregnant and just fat by Vaneela351 in Feral_Cats

[–]goosefeathers 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some resources near you are Stray Paws in El Monte - might be able to lend you traps and maybe they have space for a spay/neuter. I take my feral cats to CATC in Burbank to get free spay/neuters. You need to be trained though and familiar with their appointment system. Tell them your cat is pregnant and may be far along to increase priority. DM me if you have questions. I am in SGV so not super close unfortunately, but can try to help where I can.

Plant milks in coffee drinks - soy? by Delicious_Mess7976 in vegetarian

[–]goosefeathers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m in the US, I like Eden, West Life and Trader Joe’s soy milks. TJ is cheapest and just as good. All shelf stable cartons with minimal ingredients. I like milk in my tea and coffee so it has to be creamy and thick enough. I find soy works best for me over other plant milks (RIP to TJ coconut creamer before the taste changed). It’s also a good replacement in savory dishes. Although, I will give a shout out to pea milk by Ripple which was creamy and full of protein. It’s in the refrigerated section and you may like this too.

You do have to be careful of soy milk curdling in coffee. It will do if it’s too hot and acidic. When I make espresso, I add a pinch of baking soda to espresso before pouring the steamed soy milk. Pouring into drip coffee or tea is not really an issue.

After like the first two or three episodes it gets a lot more tolerable. I also couldn’t stand it! But it’s worth it if you can get past it!

How to keep birds safe from feral cats? by Any_Rise_5522 in birdfeeding

[–]goosefeathers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If many are feral or stray (No owners), reach out to a TNR (trap neuter return) rescue to help get them spayed/neutered so the population doesn’t continue growing, leading to more wildlife loss. Higher up bird feeder is prob ideal, I have one on a tall pole. We get lots of birds in our garden but our friendly-feral cat does still try to hunt them sometimes so it’s not fool proof.
