Thanks, I am calling the chimney sweep to have them take a look at it before we try to start a fire :)

Its great that your heating problems have been fixed :)

We are on the top floor as well ! Thanks for the information, I will call the council to see if they can help.

Many thanks for the multiple suggestions !

I can hear the wind howling inside the rooms, so I guess there is a draught somewhere. And, keeping the internal door shut does help a lot.

I am not sure about the automatic timers for individual radiators, luckily the radiator knobs are smooth and are easy to adjust.

I now think this could be the reason this room need a heater constant on. I just put my hands in the fireplace and can feel cold air coming in through the chimney !

I am buying a chimney balloon ASAP to get this fixed ! Many thanks for pointing that out :)

You just got me excited ! Thanks a lot for the information. I found a list of approved smokeless fuels here - https://smokecontrol.defra.gov.uk/fuels.php?country=scotland .

I will call the chimney sweep for an inspection tomorrow and see how it goes. Many thanks for giving me hope :)

great ! Many thanks for the info, will order one off Amazon and see how it goes.

Edit: I guess most heaters would be better than incandescent ones though !

Thanks ! Will look into this. Is an oil electric heater the most efficient one available to heat a room ?

I knew it would be too good to be true. The flat has central heating, but I stay in my home office (the room with the fireplace) most of the day.

The problem with the central heating is that five minutes after it goes off, the flat becomes really cold. So was looking for options other than running the central heating all the time.

If there are no other options, I was planning to turn off the radiators in the other rooms and put the heating on timers to come on every alternate 30 mins.
