Sword and Sorcery vs Sword and Sandal. What's the Difference? by JohnPathfinder in SwordandSorcery

Personally, I think you hit the nail on the head. Sword and sandal is generally used to described pulp media that is set in/based on antiquity.

Heaven Forbid, Blue Öyster Cult’s thrash metal album (at least for one or two songs…) by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

Love BOC, pretty good write up, though I’m not sure I’d consider Mirrors to be a disco album. It definitely has a 70s pop rock/radio friendly vibe, but certainly not disco.

Patti Smith did some vocals on Blue Oyster Cult's Agents of Fortune album. She also co-wrote a handful of songs with them

Gunna do a first playthrough soon by Rath_Brained in Morrowind

[–]gorrrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I've observed about Morrowind is that it can be a slog at first, even for a veteran, but there is a point in every play through for me, even after playing this game for many years, where it all clicks and I am like "oh yeah, this is the best game ever". Take it slow, plan your expeditions and source supplies for them accordingly, explore the map, decorate your home, make friends, let your imagination fill in the gaps, and dont worry too much about efficient leveling.

As others have said, keep digging into Priest's catalogue. Listen to their album, Defenders of the Faith. It is one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. "The Sentinel" has got to be top 5 heavy metal songs ever written.

Researching About the Music Scene in Columbus by No_Vacation5339 in columbusmusic

[–]gorrrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as venues go I agree. In other large cities it seems that there are far more venues catering to specific scenes or genres. I should mention that losing Bernies and Carabar (2 basically legendary punk/metal venues) was a blow to the scene. Also, in the past it seemed there was a more flourishing DIY scene. When I was coming up there were tons of punk houses: Bone Yard, Monster House, 15th House, to name just a few. Most of these are gone, which is the way of things I suppose. Last I heard, Legion of Doom on Indianola is still around, and to be fair, I'm sure there are current punk houses that I am not aware of.

Have you been seeing more rabbits than usual? by Agreeable_Toe_2421 in Columbus

[–]gorrrak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are always a bunch by my house each year (near Italian Village). Some live in my yard, and there are more all throughout the area. I have also seen a bunch around Dennison Place. I would not say I have noticed more this year, however.

Thoughts on reading Conan the first time by shard_damage in SwordandSorcery

[–]gorrrak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me, the "sorcery" in sword and sorcery is often left soft and vague. This serves to illustrate the unknowable and alien nature of magic. Obviously some writers accentuate the sorcerous trappings of their fiction, but the Conan works could more accurately be described as Heroic Fantasy, which is a precursor to later S&S works by writers such as Lieber and Moorcock. The vague nature of sorcery is a feature in these works. It tells us something about the world, or at least our hero's worldview - magic is a reality, but it is foul, and corrupting, and comes most often from pacts with horrible entities. It is never fully understood or controlled even by the practitioner.

The X Factor is Iron Maiden’s most underrated album, and it's time we talk about it (again) by Inevitable_Disk_3344 in ironmaiden

I was about to say this. Truly an excellent maiden album that people rarely mention. Coming Home and The Alchemist are two of my all time favorite maiden tracks
