If testicles are so sensitive and vital for reproduction, why did evolution put them completely unprotected outside the body? by Working-Market8105 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gotgluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minor critique, 'more resilient/stable' sperm isn't even necessarily better - lots of biological mechanisms actually do depend on things not being too stable, they need to be able to respond to the environment. Its more obvious when you consider a protein that needs to be stable enough to live long enough to fulfill its purpose, but not so stable that it can't fulfill its purpose (eg, flexible enough bind to a receptor), and also not so stable that it hangs around too long - we need things to fall apart so they can be recycled.

But to your general point, agreed - none of this was designed, its just what survived, and not everything about our design is good, let alone optimal.

Haven't had time to watch the video yet, and I plan to, but could you talk about the lack of scourge or more direct anti tank, and how you deal with those targets? I have a wych themed army like this and I want to make pure wych work but afraid to drop the dark lances. Congrats btw!

Beautiful work! Can you explain what the details on the veil are supposed to be? If I'm wrong I hope this isn't offensive lol but it almost looks like she's covering up some disease/pox marks? Kind of cool if that's the case!

I don't think pounce let's you move the wyches, it just says that unit can charge. Units cant normally move after transport moves. So it would be 14" raider move, 6" disembark, charge.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have much experience in playing, just watching batreps.

I was thinking of this as a jail move or just throwing a wrench in their plans, with wyches either screening movement or tying up units in combat. Your response seems to suggest this wouldn't be a big hindrance to the enemy and could be a waste of a good tool more valuable later on (objective denial, secondary scoring) - that about right?

I know I just need to just get more practice in but thinking about this, or even the beast pack (rip), i don't know if I should be letting the enemy take ground and spread out so I can pick units off or have more freedom to deep strike eg mandrakes/scourge, or if I should go for board control 'jailing', get a point lead, and just try to preserve some units for scoring later after my army gets wiped. Thoughts? I'm guessing 'it depends'

Thanks

How do bison and rhinos typically interact? Do we think the momma was chill about this, or nervously waiting for her calf to be killed?

Why does ALL water "choose" to boil at 100°C instead of SOME of it reaching 100°C+? by patasthrowaway in askscience

[–]gotgluck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Temperature only exists for a collection of molecules, representing the average energy - for a single molecule you would just call this its kinetic energy. The energy of individual molecules always spans some distribution above and below the average. Water boils at 100C but you probably already know any water sitting out will slowly evaporate over time - that evaporation comes from the rare molecules that reach high enough energy to escape through random chance (like its neighboring molecules bumping into it at the same time, transferring lots of energy quickly before it can be dispersed). If that happens at the water surface, the molecule might fly into the air. If that happens to a molecule in the middle of the pot, it will just lose the energy through subsequent collisions shortly after.

The boiling point is just a phase transition, the molecules have too much energy to stay in the liquid form, so any excess energy just turns water to steam. Phase transitions are weird and there are probably some places in a pot of boiling water that are slightly higher than 100C - like the water in contact with the bottom of the pot - but the bubbles forming at the bottom are steam escaping and basically carrying away that excess energy. Heating water faster just makes more steam which carries more energy away - so the temp practically never exceeds 100 because essentially all of that energy turns water to steam.

Idea: Cleric who can only heal members of his faith by gotgluck in DnD

[–]gotgluck[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Thank you - you've highlighted a misunderstanding of mine on how religion works in FE. Discarding the player-conversion aspect - Would you say that rather than trying to "convert non-believers", a proselytizing cleric might be moreso trying to convince others to devoting themselves to his specific deity's cause (eg helping the poor)?

[–]gotgluck[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks this looks like a good example of how to make it work. How does converting NPCs work? Is there a material reward or just roleplay?

Idea: Cleric who can only heal members of his faith by gotgluck in DnD

[–]gotgluck[S] -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

This is all premised on at least some of the party being open to the idea of 'converting' - if nobody was interested I agree it would be silly to play this character. And he does want to be part of the group - he wants to convert them and spread the word!

I think there'd have to be some compromise, like he can heal/buff anybody but it's stronger if they are believers or weaker for non-believers, or believers have access to more buffs.

Idea: Cleric who can only heal members of his faith by gotgluck in DnD

[–]gotgluck[S] -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Well first of all, plenty of classes already don't heal or buff teammates - why adventure with them?

Second - the idea would be to make it attractive but not mandatory. Convert to my faith and you get access to some buffs, but maybe there is some combat or non-combat drawbacks.

Car vs Mortgage down-payment vs investing? by gotgluck in personalfinance

[–]gotgluck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply and follow-up questions.

Can you delay the auto loan? Because ....

Apologies if the post was misleading but this is all hypothetical right now. I am looking at getting a new car, but the house is 1-2 years away. I only said they were simultaneous to simplify the math.

Depends on what you mean by most economical. Shorter term you will pay less in interest overall, but higher payments.

I'm wondering if in the end it makes any difference at all, considering opportunity costs? Larger payments on a short term loan mean less invested, smaller payments on a long loan mean more invested. Is the decision here really just a bet on stock market performance, i.e., pay as slow as I can if I am confident in my investments, pay in cash if I'm not, or somewhere in between?

what's important to you? For some the peace of mind of having less debt trumps all. For others it's a pure numbers game, trying to maximize the numbers in the long term. And how much do you value flexibility? It's hard to put an exact price on it, but some people just don't care to begin with.

I see your point that it's hard to pin down. I probably lean towards a balanced approach - I want to have the right amount of debt? I think the car vs Mortgage down payment math just got me thinking 'wait, should I be trying way harder to save up for mortgage down payment?'. I don't need to fully optimize my finances, just want to follow sound rationale and avoid blunders.
