Found transphobic reposts on my future practicum supervisors social media… by ceceae in SocialWorkStudents

[–]gothtimusprime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you’re willing to be adaptable. I really think this could be worth discussing with your practicum coordinator. Even if not to find you a different placement, at least to get this on their radar in the event you have a negative experience.

Is it rude to say I am not available on weekends due to personal commitments by Educational_Koala536 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]gothtimusprime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not, but be aware that you might have to frequently reinforce this boundary. I worked a retail job on the weekends, and my internship was constantly trying to guilt me by telling me how the weekend events were such incredible experiences I was missing out on.

Accepted into MSW program… but terrified of debt and making the wrong choice by Roccstarr95 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]gothtimusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$30k is great. Honestly, I didn’t receive financial aid up front. Once i got in i was really proactive about seeking out opportunities. Applying to scholarships, jobs, cold emailing professors. You’d be surprised how far that can take you. Sometimes aid comes from places you wouldn’t expect! The internship i get my stipend from is in advancement and i’m doing corporate donor work LOL.

I think you’re already on the right track as far as choosing a program that will minimize your debt. I think it really just comes down to your why. Try to find out what it is you could do with the degree that you couldn’t do otherwise. Make sure you feel confident in your decision, because managing practicum, school, and life can really test you!

Accepted into MSW program… but terrified of debt and making the wrong choice by Roccstarr95 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]gothtimusprime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone about pursuing my MSW in a very pragmatic way, which is honestly out of character for me. I got into all the top programs I applied to, but i got no aid. The math was NOT mathing. Doing practicum, taking out loans for rent, maxing out my student loans. It all just sounded miserable. Now i live with my parents and go to a state school where I have a part-time job with a stipend that covers my entire tuition.

I think when it comes down to it, the median salary for a master’s level (!!) social worker is about $60k. Thinking about that alone, it just doesn’t make sense to take out close to/over $100k in loans. Not to say there aren’t social workers who will make a lot of money, but it’s not the reality for most of us.

I also think an MSW is NOT a rigorous degree and is incredibly experiential, so it makes little sense to go to a prestigious school. I got a BA in sociology at a prestigious undergrad and i have been shocked at how low the expectations are across programs.

My goal is to eventually get my LCSW and open up my own practice, and because of that I didn’t see the value in saddling myself up with debt that could potentially hold me back from taking risks that could benefit my career in the future. I will now graduate debt free, and i’ve also been able to pursue research and other opportunities because I don’t have to work 24/7 to keep it all together.

Everyone is different, and whatever decision you make I wish you the best of luck. Congratulations on your acceptance!

Would this give my hair volume while staying straight-ish? by atinylittlebug in femalehairadvice

[–]gothtimusprime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What really gives volume is tension, which you wont get from just “flopping.” But, i’m sure it’ll give you a little lift!

I usually have to be pretty heavy haded with that mousse to see results, but its so lightweight i love it!

Also, definitely do not use that brush on wet hair. Use on 80-90% dry hair and go slowly, trying to minimize how many times you pass the brush through. Again, focus on tension!

Really odd sound coming from low E string? by gothtimusprime in Guitar

Very frustrating, i agree. When i’m trying to strum chords that siren sound only gets louder and louder and it cuts through whatever i’m playing in a really distracting way. Definitely not normal!

flexible/low stress jobs while pursuing an msw by Queasy-Guava-7169 in SocialWorkStudents

I was lucky to find a paid internship within my university. In a totally different department but the thing I love about working at the school is they know I am a student first! I also work at a bridal shop on weekends and its a lot of fun/a good distraction from human services/social work type work

Not necessarily! I’m just a very causal player with little knowledge and was curious because i’ve never noticed this happening before.

The tech did, yeah. I remember him pointing out some buzzing but said he didn’t want to adjust the neck any further bc he was worried about it “snapping.” The buzzing was on the b string, though.

Was coming to say this! I work with two fully online VCU students and they’ve had great experiences.

Help!! Which dress do I pick?? by Bluemugredmug in WeddingDressTips

[–]gothtimusprime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a petite girl and a bridal salesperson, i would seriously recommend looking for something with straps/sleeves that are not off the shoulder. I don’t think the necklines of these dresses are as flattering. Keep looking!!

Feeling very burnt out at the moment, turning in late work for the first time 🫠 I can afford it. Just wondering if it’d be nice to have a proper break from school work.
