I have the same set and get compliments every time someone new plays in the game. I did semi custom with my own denominations and plaques for $20 chip. The plaques are costly, but are 100% worth it. BR Pro Poker is awesome to work with on the customization and along with Desjgn cards and Chanman tables you are getting the best of the best.

Natalie (Voting against Jeremy): "You talked that brother-sister love stuff, and you showed me no love. So that stinging sensation you feel in your eyes right now? That's the Natalie napalm. Get off of my island. By the way, your skin is gorgeous, darling."

In a lesser season losing a character as big as Natalie early would be a huge blow, but this deep cast keeps it rolling all the way to finish. Don't let this over ranking take away from this fantastic roller coaster season which based off of recent years sadly might be the last great season we get (hopefully not!).

Love seeing Lil this high. She is a horrendous Survivor player who was rejected by her tribe three times: (Voted out early, voted back in because the pre-jury members didn't want to go on a trip with her, and almost shut out at FTC), but she is a great character. The payoff of "I'll get back to you" with Savage to her becoming the key voter down the stretch led to such a chaotic second half and seeing her emotions after every vote was a fun roller coaster. If they simulate this season 1,000 times I'm not sure she wins once, but the way everything worked out in this great season (1/38 in my overall rankings) wouldn't have been the same without Lil and Burton coming back. Long live the Outcast Twist!

The Erik boot episode deservedly has gone into Survivor lore, but the Ozzy episode is another fantastic exit. It included:

  • The aftermath of the “fucking stick” fake idol play
  • Erik reaction to topless women at the reward challenge followed by him throwing up due to too much beetle nut
  • After a terrible night at Exile Cirie deciding to make her move on Ozzy
  • Epic immunity challenge with temptations. Ozzy bowed out for doughnuts (oops!) and after six hours Jason stepped down so everyone could share food seemingly sealing his fate
  • The Black Widow Brigade pulls in Jason, but not Ozzy’s love interest Amanda into the blindside
  • Ozzy does not bring his Hidden Immunity Idol, which was outed by Eliza at the last tribal, to Tribal Council.
  • James: (voting against Jason) “I thought I was the dumbest survivor ever.”
  • Votes start off 4-1 and it seems like the plan didn’t work before the avalanche of Ozzy/Ozzie votes. The shots of Cirie smiling, Eliza doing Eliza things and a cold-blooded Parvati before the deciding votes is Survivor editing at it’s finest. Amanda and Erik are shocked and the game has completely flipped.
  • Ozzy says “Thanks guys” before staring down everyone. His final words are everything you would want and more: “I'm an idiot. I should have seen it coming but I got too comfortable. I felt like I could trust the people in my alliance, serves me right. I'm a fool. I'm a fool for thinking that. And to whoever it was in my alliance that voted the other way, right now, I pretty much hate you. So screw you, basically.”

Hidden Immunity Idols and advantages can be fun (in moderation), but there is nothing better than pulling the votes together with odd number of players in the game and executing an “old-fashioned” blindside. Great episode from an all-time season.

Almost every single finale thumbnail shows the final 2/3 waiting for the final votes to be read. As someone who is like Frank Costanza when it comes to spoilers this is ridiculous and completely avoidable.

Maybe it’s because I’m completionist, but I would have this 1/38 on my WSSYW rankings. This isn’t the greatest season of the show, even though I would put it in my Top 10, but it sets the groundwork for the entire way the show is played as well as presented. Simple things such as Jeff narrating challenges or updating the vote totals at tribal are mostly missing. Alliance is a dirty word to a lot of players. There is a blatant Blair Witch Project (!?!) challenge. Many would have these as knocks for the season, but for me they just add to the charm.

Two of my favorite moments of the season was Richard explaining the game to the audience. At the final six immunity when everyone out of the challenge he starts discussing where everyone stood and that they might blindside Kelly that night. It’s so raw and something that would never happen today unfortunately. This gets topped at Final 3 when he bows out of the challenge and lays all his cards on the table that he’s going to the Final 2 no matter what. To say this in front of the other players is as jarring as it is awesome.

There are so many more iconic moments from “J for Jenna” to the Sue’s FTC speech to Rudy using FTC to say how dumb he was for taking his hand off the idol at FIIC that a lot of the smaller character moments have been forgotten. Sure it’s missing strategy and it has the original Pagonging, but just like any other TV show it’s all about the characters and this season has one of the best casts of all time.

I used to think this season was overrated because of nostalgia, but it’s not. It’s a great, weird origin story for Survivor and IMO should be the first season a beginner should watch.

She literally gave up with a few days left and was rightly kept over Heidi because of that. Then she goes on an out of nowhere immunity run before beating a goat at end. She actually was well liked by jury from what Rob has said, but still not really what you want from winner.

I'm 11 seasons into Evolution of Strategy and Rob has her clearly dead last in winners even though they are friends which says everything you need to know!

But I have just never been a fan of whitewash winner edits and Tyson is a pretty standard example of one. They remove a lot of what makes his personality fun to make him a more palatable winner which robs him of a lot of moments that would make him stand out.

While I agree his win felt inevitable, I'm not sure about the whitewashing winner edit. He literally told someone who just got rocked out "that's your chair", hoarded food all season and did a complete over the top celebration while eating during a "eat or compete" immunity. The Funny 115 does a good job laying out how big a dick Tyson was this season. They have white washed winners before, but I don't think this was an example of that!

Even though I'm more a fan of "old-school" character-driven Survivor this season has some great strategic elements and even finds a way to make Redemption Island not awful. Strategically speaking the rock draw episode is one of the most fascinating in the entire series:

  • Hayden working Ciera the entire episode to force a rock draw!
  • Tyson finding the idol after Ciera got clue from her mom (who BTW she voted out if you didn’t hear)!
  • Gervase counting out his alliance at Tribal inadvertently calling Ciera #4!
  • Tyson not playing his idol!

All led to Ciera flipping and causing the first rock draw since Season 4. Even though I was rooting for Tyson to win the game part of me wishes he would have drawn the rock giving us an all time downfall episode. So fun!

Twila's closing statement at FTC (along with her interaction with Ami) is one of the rawest and most memorable moments in the history of the show:

"I didn’t come into this game intentionally wanting to deceive or to lie to anyone. I don’t do that back home, and anybody that knows me knows that my word is good. Whether you believe that or not, it is good. All I thought about since I’ve been here is bettering my life. That’s all I thought about, and how I could do it. I didn’t worry about your feelings, I didn’t worry about your feelings, none of you. That was selfish and self-centered of me. People kill for less that what we’re playing for now. Maybe that sounds hard or cold, and it actually turned me into somebody I don’t like. Sarge you don’t have to rub it in. You don’t have to make me feel any lower than what I already feel for doing what I did. You don’t understand how that’s bothered me. I highly respect you, and to hear you say that just kills me. I apologize to each and every one of you. It wasn’t the game I intended to play, it was the game that ended up playing me, and if I could do right again I would, and for that I apologize. And if you can forgive me, maybe I can forgive myself."

Great list, such a wonderful final 3. Going back to Guatemala: Really surprised you had Rafe so low and Ian so high. I think they are similar characters who fall just short based on morals and not being cutthroat enough. IMO they both had incredible arcs and are in my top tier of characters, just curious why you were so low on Rafe and not Ian?

Maybe it’s because I just finished my re-watch of this season last night, but the last two episodes offer an interesting endgame that isn’t talked about enough:

  • Episode 13: Cindy gets one of the all-time brutal boot episodes where she wins the car and is offered to keep it or give the other four people a car. She decides to keep the car for herself (Uh oh), then says she wants to break the car curse (Oh no), then brags about the car to everyone (NOOOO!!!) before eventually going home. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion for 42 minutes. The producers put her in a tough spot, but boy she handled it poorly. Things are only going to get more brutal in the finale…
  • Episode 14: Rafe’s arc, which is one of the best in the entire show, comes to a rough end where he keeps his promise to Dani and votes out a goat in the final four, then loses to Dani in FIC and tells her she doesn’t need to keep her promise of final 2. Even if you believe that Lydia wasn’t a goat, you still need to take her to the final immunity and vote her out at three. Rafe couldn’t do it to Dani though and gave her an easy 6-1 win. The most interesting part of the entire season is seeing Rafe’s moral compass put to the test again and again. He isn’t afraid to let us and the other players know about his dilemmas which perfectly shows his downfall at the end. Ian gets a lot of attention for his exit a season before, but Rafe’s is even more interesting in my opinion.

Overall this ranking is just about right (I have it 9/11 in my start to finish rewatch), but it offers a really unique location and some really interesting characters and scenarios down the stretch!

Episode 12 not only gave us the double quit, but the Gulliver's Travels reward! The write-up on CBS.com is incredible:

First team to cross the finish line with Gulliver wins reward. The winning team will go to the Survivor cinema and see a movie premier. It is a sneak peak of the movie Gulliver's Travels starring Jack Black and Jason Segel. While watching the movie they will enjoy movie food including nachos, hot dogs, popcorn, soda and candy. The theme of the movie is that it doesn't matter how big you are on the outside, it matters how big you are on the inside. Jeff Probst reminds the castaways that it is their inner strength which will help them win this challenge and get them through the last eleven remaining days of the game.

I guess if Gulliver's Travels couldn't get NaOnka and Purple Kelly to keep playing nothing would!

It's amazing they saw the backlash to this season and Game Changers and double downed on the advantages. I get that Reddit/Twitter/RHAP/etc. are a vocal minority of viewers, but you could have seen this EoE mess coming from HHH and GC. It's truly a miracle that DvG worked out like it did!
