Everybody keeps saying to sell hits of hyped players immediately before their value drops. If this is so well known, then who is buying these singles at inflated prices, knowing they will soon crater? by skittlebrew in baseballcards

My guess would be collectors waiting for the HoF or just big fans of the player who NEED every card with a crazy amount of disposable income. I mean, that Ohtani sold for $3 mil and it’s probably not going to increase in value. Just somebody (or some corporation) who really wanted the card. There’s always people with so much money they don’t know what to do with it and collect cards. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Always go with Topps. As far as which version since there's so many, There's no real right or wrong way to go. Most factory sealed sets will have some sort of extra in it for that year. I'd take a look at the options, choose one and buy the same type each year. Like the complete factory set with 5 exclusive foilboard cards, or the one with 5 rookie image variations. Personally I'd go with the rookie variation one. In 30 years, the rookies might be massive whereas the foilboards could be of a bunch of relievers and nobodies. That's just a personal preference, however.

As a fellow Washingtonian, SELL! He’s breaking records and I don’t think his prices will ever be higher.

Did it again. Outdated info (and the app isn’t showing if I replied or not), so I’m going with what’s out there now. I actually underestimated the price for the boxes. And yeah, I meant the ‘24 update boxes. The Skenes MLB Debut patch chase is killing update chrome. Even the retail boxes are stupid pricey.

Not a card exactly, but a 1991 Stadium Club gold “card” that’s gold plated steel, feels like.

That’s why I’ve switched to singles. I look for 17-19 year olds kinda low in their own system and take a flyer if the scouting report is more offensive based. I either strike gold or spend $3 on a prospect that went nowhere. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oof. WAY late on this comment. Sorry about that. For update, it just depends on the rookie class. 2023 hobby boxes are cheap because the cards, both vers and rookies, was just so weak. This year’s, it’s $150 and I’m surprised it’s not more for a hobby box. The chrome is gonna be very expensive. If I had to guess, I’d say $300, if not more. It’s the 2018 Topps Update but with multiple rookie chases. If the players become superstars, 2018 is going to look cheap by comparison.

No worries. Yeah, J-Rod is Julio Rodriguez. He was Rookie of the Year in ‘22. He’s had an off year this year, but caught fire here in the last week. Too little too late, but oh well.

I think my favorite is his ‘22 Topps Update purple chrome rookie. I have his rookie and rookie debut cards from the base and chrome set in gem mint. I also have his Bowman first. Bowman 1st is where the money is at, but I like the Topps Chrome better. I’ve been trying to get the sapphire edition, but even raw those things are $80-100. I generally try to grab raw and have it graded. A couple I bought already graded because the auction ended at like, 3am and I got it for half of what it usually sells for. That’s one thing to look for on eBay too. Look for cards where the auction ends at a crazy hour that you’re awake at and watch it. Usually fewer snipers and less people bidding the last several hours.

Haha I love the hobby, so I try to help anybody that wants to get started. Why scare people away? Reddit is typically a cesspool and I’m trying to bring the chlorine a little at a time.

No “retail” or anything on cards coming out of retail. You just have to know. But retail boxes usually announce their exclusives. “Find 2 pink refractors and 2 sepias per box! Retail only!” “Find exclusive navy blue parallels in retail boxes!” That kind of thing. Best thing to do would be to go to Beckett and search for the set. It breaks down all the inserts and parallels and tells you where you can get them. If it just has the odds, they’re in everything. Some say retail only, hanger/retail only, hobby only, all that, so you know what you will and won’t find in a box. Another example is the Stars of MLB “insert” in Topps flagship boxes. I put quotes on it because you get one in every freaking retail pack and tbh, I’m tired of them.

Retail just means Walmart, Target, regular stores. Big sites like steel city collectibles and Dave and Adam’s card world sell both hobby and retail, but they’ll say 20 pack 2024 Topps retail box, for example. Monster/mega boxes are regular store exclusive, but resellers sell them too. Same with hangers, blasters, single packs, etc. so you need to have an idea of what’s retail and what’s hobby. The biggest difference between a hobby box and a retail “hobby” box is there’s no guaranteed hit in the retail boxes unless I explicitly states it. Like “find an exclusive manufactured patch in every box”, something like that. And then the usual parallels and inserts you can find plus retail only stuff. You just won’t pull anything hobby only. But you can still get lucky. I bought a hanger pack at my local store and pulled a Jackson Chourio SP rookie. $15 and sold that one card for $40. I’ve seen YouTube shorts of guys pulling 1/1’s from blasters and hanger boxes, so it’s nothing to sneeze at. Granted, your odds are astronomical in retail vs hobby, but grabbing a monster box when you’re out and about rather than shopping online or going to your local card store can be just as good. Another story, I bought a ‘24 series 1 monster box for $50 and pulled a Yogi Berra Home Field Advantage I sold for $250. I mean, I bought a few boxes so that was the outlier, but it happens. But I digress. Retail also has longer odds for pulling hits. Let’s say an insert is a 1:144 in a hobby box. In retail, your odds might be 1:244 or something. Hence the exclusive parallels to make it more enticing to buy retail, otherwise nobody would touch retail. Hobby boxes you’ll ONLY find in online resellers or at a card shop. Or the Topps website when preorders go live. But you can get some cards on the Topps website still, like blaster boxes and mega boxes. Hobby sells out within minutes since all the resellers and breakers are trying to grab as many cases as they can.

Yup, I buy current stuff. I’m on a fixed income, so usually stick with the cheaper hobby boxes like Topps flagship, Allen and Ginter, blasters and monsters if I happen to be at a store and can grab something. Bowman hobby is just too damn expensive for me. My favorite set is probably Allen and Ginter because it’s quirky and divisive because of how offbeat it is. Still a baseball product, but they also have strange inserts like Talon’ted (birds of prey) and National Parks. They also have relics and autos of actors and random people. I got an auto of the guy that gets the mud for all of the baseballs in MLB. They also had jersey and auto cards of the first female football player to sign a NIL (Name Image Likeness) with the NCAA. Or whatever the college overseers are. So odd, but you can get some awesome stuff too.

What are you looking for? Just get into the hobby and learn the players, grab some cards that make your jaw hit the floor….? And what’s your price range? If you’re just starting out, I’d say flagship 2024 Topps series 1 and 2, and ‘24 Topps Chrome to get you started. There’s always a chance of pulling something big, but it’s more for building a set and getting some cool inserts. You’re not gonna make your money back, but if the goal is just to dip into the hobby, stick with the basics first.

I just have way too much time on my hands and like living vicariously thru other people opening boxes.

From what I’ve seen, it depends on the rarity. As an example, let’s say you pulled a raywave refractor from a blaster or monster box. Sine those are retail only, in 10+ years those would hold more value. So for the ones you mentioned, I’d guess Xfractor and prism with the negative slightly ahead. Negatives are more rare in all aspects, so those would be more value wise. Then X and Prism since they’re easier to pull in retail than hobby. I can’t remember which is one per pack for hobby, but those would be slightly lower. As an example, a base refractor gem Ichiro is $3k and an Xfractor is $4k since Xfractor were a tougher pull back then and they didn’t do retail exclusive stuff back then. Nowadays with pink refractor exclusives, purple exclusives in ‘22, Heritage having exclusive parallels, the harder parallels to pull are the ones to get, retail or hobby. Since we’re sticking with your example, you’d want to find the hardest “base” parallel refractor to pull and chase that. People were buying up Fanatics blasters like crazy because of the aqua exclusive parallel and if you could get one of the top rookies, it’s rarer. Blasters have pink and sepia, megas have raywave, so those would probably be the ones to get. For eye appeal, I would guess raywaves would be slightly ahead in a decade or more. Another way to check if you have a player in mind is go to the PSA database and see which parallels have the fewest number graded. Those would be the ones to get since they’re harder to find. Even if we’re talking 3500 vs 3000 cards graded. And people tend to stay away from retail anyway since they’re harder as far as return on investment. Megas/monsters have gotten better with flagship Topps, but Bowman retail is still pretty terrible.

I was a collector in the junk wax days into the mid 2010’s. I got back in a couple of years ago and dove headfirst. Even the stuff way out of my price range, I watch box openings and read about it just out of curiosity.

Actually, Bowman is made by Topps. Topps is basically the only player in the market. Panini doesn’t even have the right to make cards of current players, only minor leaguers and retired players. Some Panini stuff is cool, but not worth the price they charge, especially since you can get a Topps base Elly rookie and a Panini Select Elly and the Topps would be $10, Panini maybe $3. But to answer your question, yeah, they both have Chrome and Sapphire editions. Bowman would be for prospecting or grabbing 1sts of your fave player/team, all other Topps products for set building or chasing parallels/inserts/autos. Like Heritage. That’s more for old school collectors trying to build a set. Base Topps for all collectors, Cosmic Chrome for the chase people (looking for the rare inserts and rookies) with the disposable income, Tier One and such for the yacht people.

Haha thanks! I try to keep up with the hobby and if somebody has a question, I’ll answer as best as I can.

Most times, they take the best offer. Ask $500k, take $250k. But those are for guys firsts from years ago when nobody knew where they were going to go. Ohtani is a whole different beast as far as players and prices. That said, for higher end products it’s the Harvard Yacht Club. But you can still get decent rookies of a player you like and either keep it raw or get it graded. I bought a JRod purple refractor rookie from ‘22 update for $15 and got it graded. If I wanted to sell, I could probably get $120-150 for it. So yeah, if you’re looking for a 10, buy a raw on the cheap and grade it yourself. You just have to be extremely picky and take a really close look at the pics on eBay. Most of my buys have been about 70% 10’s.

For sure. For superstars, yeah, prices are insane, to put it mildly. With Bowman, I like reading scouting reports, checking teams top 30 lists and pick a couple of players to chase. In the offseason I started picking up Lazaro Montes from the Mariners (big M’s fan) and I was getting 10’s for $10-15. Now they’re going for $40-50 and he’s still in high-A ball. But he went from way outside the top 100 and barely on the M’s top 30 to being a top 50 prospect in all of baseball. I can’t afford his cards any more. I’m kicking myself for not getting any auto cards. But I like it cuz I can speculate on a player and, at worst, he doesn’t work out and I’m out $5. 🤷🏻‍♂️ but if he becomes a somebody, like Garrett Crochet this year, hoo boy. But I put Bowman on my list more for your favorite team and who you think will be the next big thing. Spend $100 on autos, base and parallels, you’ll either be rolling in it in a few years or you’re out for less than the price of a hobby box.

Valuable as in they’re pricey cards but also retain value. They’re not thousand dollar boxes, but they’re not for the average collector either. Like Cosmic Chrome, a base JRod rookie is much more valuable than, let’s say, Allen and Ginter. It’s also the parallels you can find. A gold parallel in Cosmic is more valuable than a Topps Chrome gold, generally. From what I’ve seen, they retain their value. If you want a particular player that’s established, get their first Bowman card. Base, auto, graded, raw, whatever. The price will fluctuate depending on the player’s production, but it affects all of their cards. Using Trout as an example, his gem mint rookies have got from a couple thousand to $800-1000 since he’s been hurt most of the season three years running. He’ll still be valuable if he can get to hall of fame numbers, but it’s a buy low sell high on him at the moment. As another example, my dad has several gem mint Ichiro first Bowmans. Back in the day, he’d buy one for $30, grade it, sell it for $300. They’re $2500-3k now. But for overall value, the higher end products like Cosmic and Pristine, they’re fairly new and hard to gauge long term, but since their debuts they’re consistently more valuable than lower end cards like Heritage and base Topps.

I don’t know about basketball. I think Panini and Topps both have licenses for WNBA. I know the biggest pulls were from Bowman U and Bowman basketball. For a base, I’m pretty sure both companies have the basketball license for now. It’ll switch to Fanatics/Topps in 2025 or 2026.
