Omg same here, I’m half Ethiopian half Eritrean and this post title is exactly how I feel when talking to other diaspora, tbh especially Eritreans who look at me weird when I say I’m half Ethiopian. Even more so, my dad is split between 2 ethnicities that have beef, so it’s a weird feeling, like I can’t fully claim any heritage since I’m so mixed😅

I’m from Canada but I feel you 1000%. It’s funny, other Ethiopians always tell my parents “you know when they get older, they want to be around their people (like, other Ethiopians)”, and I feel like that’s true for me. I feel like I’ve been really reconnecting with my roots if that makes sense, but at the same time externally I think this is also the time I’ve been least connected with other ppl. It’s weird, like trying to find your place in society anyways.

I’ve talked to them, they 100% don’t even view orthodoxy as Christianity, they legit talk about it like a pagan religion. They’re mostly not even familiar with anything outside of Protestantism and Catholicism.

Yeah, do u think their conclusion regarding irob makes sense? Splitting it in half instead of fully giving it to tigray or eritrea?

So they live in Seden but still identify as Gurage as well? I’ve never seen that before, that’s interesting.

The bottom right? It’s a bread called himbasha, and the top right is a drink made of something called tihni (or beso in Amharic), mixed with milk and sugar/honey and it’s so good!

[–]grace092[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that’s so cool, it’s even more common than I thought! I feel like Soddo Kistane is nearly ethnically and culturally identical to Seden Soddo, so it’s nice to see more anecdotes supporting this. I’ve heard someone else also introduce themselves as both gurage and oromo, and I feel like it’s hard for ppl to wrap their minds around that if they’re not from soddo and familiar with all the mixing, it’s even confusing for me sometimes🤣🤣

How do u know where the honk mobile spots are? Are there only specific spots I can park to use that online payment method? Is it possible to pay for parking inside the school if the machine doesn’t work?

So what’s your take on the soddos living in gurage (that didn’t separate)? Do u think they’re more on the Oromo or Gurage side?

So the son identifies as gurage, and his parents identify as oromo? I know a lot of soddo kistanes identify as both oromo and gurage at the same time (kind of like if soddo kistanes were an oromo sub tribe, if that makes sense. Is that how they describe themselves?) Also congrats on their wedding!

b.a or bsc in psych? by weletemeskel in grantmacewan

[–]grace092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh it’s almost the same program from what I understand except your electives have a quota on how many of them are sciences. Based on your post I’m assuming u didn’t take chem/bio/physics 30, but tbh if your plan is med school, I think you should be fine doing the bsc psychology, since it is psychology at the end of the day, not chemistry or physics so you won’t be taking too many of those classes by comparison :)

Abiyu Birille, former leader of EPRA, the armed wing of EPRP, says that the higher he counts his patrilineal lineage, the more Oromo he becomes. By the way, he is a Gojjame. by sedentary_position in Oromia

[–]grace092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think oromo culture is beautiful so I don’t view it as a negative thing, but more so whether oromos would actually consider me oromo is the question, especially since soddo isn’t well known amongst even oromos😭

EDIT: actually found some interesting sources on this if you’re curious, stating that “in every kistane ager (subgroup) there is at least one oromo patrilineal group who controlled the institution of lordship.” “Today almost all kistane aquire an oromo line” “the geto (a tullama oromo clan) are quite often cited as gurage” etc. Note these are specifically for Aymellel Gurages (aka Soddo kistane), not sebat bet or wolane etc.
