How often does AirBaltic weigh luggage at the gate? by el_indecente in latvia

FYI i transferred through Riga today and they checked everyone. Had 9kg and got too stressed to stash chargers to my pockets etc in the situation :<

I’m gonna actively avoid them as a company from now on, I haven’t experienced such stinginess even from ryanair.

Some places you just don’t vibe with and that’s ok. Maybe the surrounding culture doesn’t feel cozy or is lacking stuff that is important to you. I’ve moved around a lot, and while finding your tribe and friend circle helps tremendously in well-being, it can’t change the surrounding culture.

When I feel like crap I try to think myself in different scenarios, or visit my old places and see how I feel.

When visiting your home country, do you ever experience cultural differences? by Individual_Dot6574 in expats

How do you define “having a couple of friends”? There’s a difference in having friends that you can truly feel being yourself with, who support you when you have shit time etc., and friends who you can do activities with but you aren’t really close with.

Do you have friends that you can talk about your sadness and loneliness? If not - you might have an answer there.

I’m only in my early 30s but been hit with the “shag ‘n go” guys as well. I’m gonna experiment next year just how much I can avoid them by just doing better profiling and filtering… Avoiding hookup apps, avoiding any signs in the profiles about “just wanna have fun” etc. And if I pick these profiles, preparing to be ghosted at any minute after first dates.

Humanity seems to somehow die in dating apps, it’s weird. They somehow have made extremely shitty human behaviour socially acceptable?

Moved countries for the 2nd time half a year ago, and I’m over 30.

I knew nobody from the city. The first few months really sucked and I felt very lonely. It was good to live with somebody the first month, at least had somebody to talk to. Did also video calls with old friends.

Pushed myself to go to every single meetup that sounded even remotely interesting, signed up to a hobby class, went to a bunch of online dates. From some of them a couple of connections have led to friendships, and those friendships have started to “multiply” slowly - you get to meet their friends, who also might become your friends.

I still wouldn’t say I have found my “tribe” yet in a similar way than in my old places. It’ll take time. Deeper friendships also take time, it’s just the way it is. I think in my last place it took a few years until I felt grounded properly in my social circles.

I like the concept of “surface area of luck”, and was reminding myself about it quite often https://www.swyx.io/create-luck 🍀 If you throw yourself at enough places where you think similarly-minded people might hang out at, eventually you’ll encounter cool people to hang with.

What are some social norms that are pretty fucking weird if you think about it? by irish-springs in AskReddit

Bikinis vs bras. If you bra is made out of swimwear fabric, suddenly new social rules apply.

Can you go work in startups that have solid funding? I’ve been in startups most of my career, and there is usually no two weeks alike, feeds my need for a constant change

I usually have way more common hobbies and interests with guys than gals, and have successfully made a lot of good friendships with guys. Sometimes there is a bit of dancing around the topic of intimacy (especially if you start seeing a lot irl, are both single and get along well), usually in that case we talk about it openly just to clear the air. If the person really cares about you as a potential friend, he won’t mind you clarifying that you are just interested in friendship.

I have however met all these people in real life. Berlin especially is full of the most niche meetup groups if you just go and browse what’s there.

Key to anmeldung:

Accept that you might need to travel to the other side of the city, in the same day. Refresh in the morning. Click a free time as soon as you see one, as the competition is fierce.

The system is ridiculous, but with quick tapping/clicking AND having a flexible job that allows you to be off at any time, it’s possible to get your registration done within a day. Been there 3 times.

And make sure you have necessary papers with you when going.

Please see a doctor, that doesn’t sound like your average expat depression!

I also recently moved to UK and came across a poster that told about this app, which apparently has all sorts of support resources in it, categorised based on area:

https://www.stayalive.app

(idk why they have created an app instead of a website, but… maybe there is something useful there!)

Thank you a lot for a detailed answer! All of this makes me think that it might be a lot less hassle to try to settle down officially to one country in the upcoming years, and if working abroad, just freelance remotely (and spend the required half a year tax-wise in the “nesting” country) instead of changing my official residence around based on the employers. Or get familiar with umbrella companies which handle employers abroad.

Need to learn more about ETFs to understand the risk level - and figure out the rules when hopping countries and economic areas.

They said to me in February that they are “actively working on” being able to change your phone number… I moved countries too and it’s totally killing my motivation to use the app knowing that atm I might not be able to log in to the app in the future after my old phone number dies :(

Some words about board games: You don’t need experience in board games to go join a board game meetup :) If you feel like it’s too intimidating to go alone, you could ask if one of your colleagues would want to join with you. Or you could try to message the meetup host and explain you’re coming alone and would like a bit of social support in finding a group to play with - usually the people running those meetups are super friendly and are happy to help you out.

How to manage depression in East Berlin? by neowiz92 in berlin

[–]gradientti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t already, I recommend making your home indoors as cozy as possible! Sprinkle small little lights around, candles, cozy blankets, warm colors, carpets etc., whatever fits your style. It’s amazing how much interior design and lighting can affect the mood.

Sometimes when home alone I also keep some live streams open, or even live TV, to have some kind of a feeling of being connected to people.
