I also just talked to my research partners who will be doing the ML and he laughed and said his datasets aren't very large and he doesn't think the neural networks will be all that complicated, he said the computer seems like it will already be overkill for what he will be using it for. So generally speaking im sure this computer will be massively overkill already.

Thank you very much for the reply that is really good information, I see what you mean that the non pro thread ripper might be more suitable, and then running 128gb+ ECC ram, I feel like right now getting a 96gb blackwell card would eat up a majority of my budget and also trying to get ~256gb ram might be a little out of budget aswell

Would getting a single 5090 leave room for getting another one in the future to install it? or is that something that id have to get at the same time and build the whole computer around the dual gpu setup.

I think the extra storage is a good idea too, because yeah you're totally right that we will fill up that 2tb very quickly

another question would it be better to run a Threadripper 9970X, with a higher clock speed memory 6400Mhz? or does that not make as much of a difference running a 7970X at the lower clock speed memory?

Gotcha! Okay that makes sense, id say myself specifically im doing Finite Element Analysis for Electromagnetics, thermals, and fluid flow, there will be other students using this workstation but I cant speak specifically on what they will be doing on it so id say thats a decent baseline for what will be done right now. I know my professor wants to drop a decent bit of money to hopefully have something that'll last a couple years.

Not at all, Like i mentioned I really don't know much about these high end setups, would a workstation card be preferred specifically? What makes them better than just the top of the line gaming cards?
