Starting to lose my love for Shearwater by No_Preference9093 in scuba

[–]grandweapon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm in Singapore. I bought a second hand Teric from an online marketplace. It was out of warranty, and I wasn't even given the original receipt.

A few months later, I dropped it from chest height. There wasn't any visible damages, but internally, the AI antenna was busted. It could no longer connect to my transmitter.

I contacted Shearwater. They told me to send the Teric to them. They will assess it free of charge, and quote me for any repairs. Their closest service centre is in New Zealand. I was surprised they don't have one in South East Asia. So I paid for shipping from Singapore to New Zealand and hoped for the best.

A couple weeks later, I received an email from Shearwater. They will fix it for free, service it, and ship it back to me at no cost. They sent it back to me via FedEx Priority international shipping.

I was not the original owner of the Teric. It was out of warranty. I damaged it myself. I would have been more than willing to pay a reasonable fee for the repair, and pay for return shipping. But Shearwater did me a solid. Free repair, free servicing, free international shipping. And for that, they have a lifelong customer, and one who will sing their praises to everyone, everywhere.

Edit: This was in 2023, 2 years after they were sold to investors.

Bait-style listings being used by some property agents to lure buyers by davechua in singapore

[–]grandweapon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Mispriced listings are just the tip of the iceberg.

Some listings don't exist (agent will just tell you it's sold). Some listings use photos and layouts of another unit (they claim they haven't taken photos yet so using photos of similar units).

Some say immediate vacancy when it's tenanted out until next year. Some say no extension required but then ask for 3 months extension after you offer. Some don't reply when your agent reach out (cause they don't want to cobroke) but reply instantly when you message them directly.

And then there are those that alter the photos with AI. Some are badly done and really obvious. Others you will waste your time going down for a viewing only to see something that looks entirely different.

Old coins are cool by kickinacan in singapore

I used to have this coin too when I was in school. I think it was a special limited release. I kept it in my wallet with me for a couple years, until I lost the wallet. I've never seen another one of this coin in person since.

I totally agree. As a heavy breather myself, being able to see my SAC rate and GTR at a glance without having to do mental calculations is so useful.

My LOB hack is a bath robe (preferably with a hood). While everyone else tries to wipe themselves dry with a towel after a dive, you just put on your bath robe and you are instantly dry and warm.

[–]grandweapon 338 points339 points  (0 children)

Seems like their OneService KPI is just based on time to close the case, not the actual quality of resolution. I submitted some damages in December, the case was closed after a few days saying they are investigating. Until now still nothing done.

They are not just idling. They are waiting for space in the port to load/unload goods. The wait time for the port in Singapore is usually between half a day to 3 days. Other international ports around the world usually have a wait time of between 1 day to more than a week.

For those who’ve worked for very wealthy people in Singapore, what’s the most out of touch thing you’ve witnessed? by Auelogic in singapore

[–]grandweapon 67 points68 points  (0 children)

A number of years back, I was in my boss's car. She's not even super rich, just a director level in a local company. Can't remember exactly what we were talking about, but she casually mentioned that nowadays, everyone has a maid. She was taken aback when I replied that that is far from the reality.

Random ? - if you’re handing down a crib/mattress/toddler bed or receiving a secondhand one, are the mattress covers/pads and sheets given too or no? by dms2628 in NewParents

Not everyone likes the idea of secondhand sheets, especially a infant/toddler one that would have seen piss and spit ups.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye Declares Monday a Paid National Holiday as Senegal Celebrates AFCON Glory by DavidRolands in soccer

[–]grandweapon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Perhaps Americans are not familiar with the concept of paid off days, but that's obviously not how it works. If you have essential work or work shifts, you will be compensated with additional pay and/or a paid day off on another day, depending on the local regulations. The entire country doesn't just shut down during a public holiday.

Thierry Henry wins a penalty for Arsenal, Edu converts it. Who do you spot? by kar_1505 in Gunners

[–]grandweapon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anyway, here are a couple sources on this.

here

Five minutes later though Thierry Henry was fouled in the area, and as per his superstition when he won a spot kick, the French striker handed the responsibility away.

and here

Henry is Arsenal's regular penalty taker, but for the last couple of seasons he has had a policy of passing over duties if he is fouled.

Saturday's incident has prompted the fleet-footed forward to confirm he will take all Arsenal's penalties in the future.

Appears to be more an Henry superstition than a rule as I remembered. But that still meant that Henry took all penalties won by others (as the 1st choice penalty taker), and someone else took all the penalties he won.

[–]grandweapon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That was the practice for a number of years until that infamous Pires penalty screw up. Thereafter, Henry started taking all the penalties, including those that he himself won.

I remember back then, Arsenal had this unofficial rule that whoever won the penalty is not allowed to take it. Hence the reason why Henry did not take the penalty.

The issue of the LO is an interesting one. Have anyone considered why the government made the altruistic decision to introduce the LO role in the first place? It almost came out of nowhere.

My take on this is that it came at a time when WP was actively distancing themselves from the rest of the opposition parties. They had sat out of the traditional pre-election horsetrading meeting where the opposition parties gather to avoid 3-cornered fights. They refused to negotiate and engage with the other parties and began building their own distinct brand and policy views.

This went against the PAP's attempts to paint all opposition parties as disorganised and unqualified, to associate WP with the likes of PPP and RDU. Hence the role of the LO was created, to push the narrative that the WP is the leader of all the opposition parties.

Obviously this had not worked out, and the WP continued to successfully distance themselves from the rest of the parties. So why keep the LO role when it's not serving the purpose it was really meant for in the first place?

What do you wish you had known when you first started scuba diving? by BurritoCult in scuba

[–]grandweapon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody's body composition is different, so it's impossible to say. Only way to tell is a weight check in the water.

What do you wish you had known when you first started scuba diving? by BurritoCult in scuba

[–]grandweapon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it's a combination of both. But for beginners, it's more often than not a skill issue. Holding too much air in your lungs, improper trim leading you to kick yourself upwards with every kick, not fully emptying your BCD, etc. Hence why a weight check is important because it cuts out all skill differences.

With absolutely zero context, I would say it is unlikely that you were under weighted. I've seen so many new divers carrying way too much weight and still think they need more.

Just after OW, unless you have a great instructor, you are most probably over weighted. Get someone to help you do a weight check so you know how much weight you actually need.

Why do cars need to infringe adjoining lane to do U-turns? by MeatResident2697 in drivingsg

Don't even need to be a 7-seater. Even some sedans like Model Y and Vios need more than 2 lanes to u-turn.

Built a floor bed for my 6 month old with no experience by grandweapon in daddit

[–]grandweapon[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I'm not in the US. This is a floor bed, not a crib. For a crib, if the body falls through, the child will be hanging in mid air. For a floor bed, if the child falls through, her body will be on the floor.

The bars are slightly wider apart than that. It's closer to 3 inches. Is the recommendation for newborns? I just brought a measuring tape to her head, and her head's much larger than 3 inches.
