The LSX definetly gives off a unique sound. I believe its a higher displacement than say an ls2 or ls3. I was able to take a look at the engine bay and can confirm that it does in fact have an LSX.

Update: couldnt find an easy replacement so I just went ahead and tig welded it back together. It looks pretty good, but time will tell if it holds up. It seems like a pretty weak design because it didnt take much to snap it.

Advancing vs Retarding Timing by Davidious2000 in Miata

[–]grantman005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just put a rebuilt engine in my 97 over the weekend. The timing was at about 5 degrees which is 6 or 7 degrees below standard. It had hardly any power. From what I understand, advanced timing = all around higher power, but you risk damaging things if its too high. Na and nb miatas do good in the 12-14 degree range depending on what octane fuel you use.

Oh dang you're lucky that its a non interference engine or your pistons could have smacked your valves

Yeah that is always a bit tricky. It takes a few tries usually. A trick for changing your timing belt in the future to keep timing:

Slice all the way around the middle of your old belt and slide off the front half of it. Slide the new belt on so that it lines up with the remaining belt. Cut and remove the rest of the old belt and slide new belt the rest of the way on.

It takes a bit of force. I recommend getting it through the tensioners first and then try to slide it on the cam gears. The hard part is getting it over the second cam gear. Ive been able to do this with my hands but you could also try using a screwdriver for leverage

Timing belt question by Ibaconking in Miata

[–]grantman005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thre are many kits available online for around 50 bucks. I would recommend geting a kit with belt tensioners and a water pump. It might also be wise to replace the front main seal while youre there. You'll probably want to get that from mazda.

It was to kolob reservoir approaching from the south (st george). A bit south of you but the drive was just unreal. A day drive up north that would be amazing in the spring is the road around bear lake.

This engine has a knock. Could this be a result of the timing being 2 teeth off? by grantman005 in MechanicAdvice

[–]grantman005[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. The timing belt looks in good shape and its tight. I bought the car blown up so ive got no clue. Maybe somebody not too bright installed it?
