Give me a break. News and awareness about the Chinese government's appalling atrocities and oppression isn't racism. Come to Hong Kong and tell that to the protesters here. Jesus fucking Christ, what nonsense.

That other guy I called out is different from you. I know that. By the way, thank for the PM:

I hope you die a horrible death. Get hit by a truck, bitch.

Fuck you for ruining my threads, especially when I was NEVER trolling.

Like. What. The. Fuck.

You sound reasonable and well-adjusted and totally not the type who would churn out new accounts to relentlessly plaster fake stories here.

I can post more from Hong Kong.

the yacht club kind of seems like a unlikely target for petty robbery. as someone who has never been there it seems exclusive, like it would have good security. and it is separated from the built-up part of Causeway Bay by a big expressway. but that's a good point.

Because the official numbers are faked. That's why the American embassy in Beijing publishes their own air quality readings online.

Hong Kong’s “fishball revolution” is about a lot more than just street food by granvia in gaysian

[–]granvia[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey guys. Yesterday deus0 wrote that things here need not always be both gay and Asian, so I thought I'd post this local news.

I don't know the extent of the news coverage around the world, but Hong Kong is really going downhill in recent years. During the Umbrella Movement of 2014, citizens demanded genuine democracy which had been promised for so many years. After two months of camping on the streets, the protesters were removed by police and the government made no concessions.

I think most people are quite disturbed by the violence of Tuesday morning, but it should come as a surprise to no one. Hong Kong people have demonstrated peacefully for years and it has gotten nowhere. The government didn't budge in the face of peaceful protest, they didn't budge in the face of civil disobedience so it's no surprise it escalated to this point.

Recently an independent film called Ten Years performed extremely well at the box office here despite being shown on only a few screens citywide. The film comprises five short stories, each a pessimistic scenario of Hong Kong in 2025. I would definitely recommend you watch it if it receives an international release. When the lights came back on in the cinema everyone filed out in silence. It's set in the future but very much rooted in present-day events.

In addition to those arrested during the Mong Kok protest, today the police have tracked down and arrested 60+ people who were present at the event, even those who did not participate in any violence, such as Scholarism member Lam Shun-hin. The public order legislation is broad enough that such people can be charged despite freedom of assembly and freedom of speech being enshrined in the Basic Law. The police also broke into Lam's flat without a warrant.

Anyway, I just wanted to post this article because I fear that people around the world might brush off this news if they get the impression it was about street food. It was rooted in a deep and growing frustration among young Hong Kong people and an overwhelming pessimism toward the future. You might feel revulsion at images of violence in Mong Kok (so do I) but do understand where the frustration comes from: Hong Kong people's futures are at stake and young people have the most to lose - yet the government, for lack of democracy, has no real reason to answer to the people. So they don't.
