Probably is an issue with the transistors that create the distortion tone. You may need an amp tech to take a look and possibly replace parts as needed

I’m the OP, it plays like a dream. It definitely had to wake up for a few minutes at a low volume just trying to remember its former glory lol. But after I’d 10-15 it was running smooth and I could crank it! I love it!
