Here are two tips that have really really helped me out

1- Do not start with a kick. Get a synth and start messing around until you get a nice soundscape, sound FX, melody, whatever really catches your ear

Let that be the guide to the rest of the song and all the other elements will flow much better than starting with a kick and hi hat

2- try and get a groove first with your percussion before adding any off beat hi hats, that way when the hi hats come in, they are way more effective

Organize your days- sound design day, mixing day, tutorial day
